Safari trip lens advice

I did a safari with nothing but a DA 18-250 and got some terrific shots. I'd second the advice re not swapping lenses a lot. There were rarely times when 250 wasn't enough reach but plenty of times where I needed the wide end. You'll wind up closer to animals than you think. To your original question, I think the 60-250 is worth every penny. After picking one up I sold my 55-300 and my 50-135.

What to Take on First Trip with My K-1

I wouldn't leave the 28-105. It's not that big or heavy. It actually weighs less than my FA 100 macro so I'd choose the 28-105 over the 100 macro for weight and versatility. The other consideration is who are you travelling with. In my case zooms are a much better option as it means fewer lens swaps and less foot-tapping from my wife. Be considerate of your travel partners and you'll enjoy the trip more.

WR Travel Lens(es) For K1? Pentax-D FA 24-70mm Or Recommend Something Else?

I'm really happy with the 28-105. For your budget you could get this lens for the bulk of your shots and an ultra-wide prime if you need something wider indoors. The Irix 15mm seems to be getting good reviews, or the 14mm Samyang. Need to be comfortable with manual focus though for these primes.

K1 vs 645z & Cost

Think it's been said; K-1 for ultra wide or telephoto, 645z for pretty much everything else. I had both but had to sell a system when I moved overseas so the Z went. K-1 is more versatile but I'll buy another Z the moment I hit US soil for good.

Who's your favourite Photographer?

Ansel Adams was the first for me that really caught my eye, learning at my father's knee. I played around at photography for a number of years but never took it very seriously. I'll probably catch some flak for this, but the guy that made me start really wanting to get serious was Peter Lik. I'd never heard of him but happened to wander into one of his galleries during a Hawaii vacation and really loved his work. At the time he was still selling copies of "Ghost" and had one in the gallery for $5k. I wanted to buy it but my wife wouldn't have it. A few years ago I visited his gallery in Houston and found out a copy had just sold for $500k. FInally, a weapon to turn back the tide when the wife gets on a rant. I owe him for that.

Pentax 645 Tele Extender ( 1.4) compatibility

This, and I'll add that I seriously doubt there is an adapter to put a k-mount lens on a 645 teleconverter. If there is I've never heard of it. If you're looking for a k-mount 1.4 teleconverter I'd recommend the HD 1.4 k-mount teleconverter

Sigma 100-300 f4 owners: is this what I should expect from this lens??
Posted By jrpower10

I've never owned a Sigma 100-300 so I'll speak more generally. I owned a DA 300 at one time and virtually any zoom is going to fall short in comparison. Expectations need to be realistic. Also, fiddling with back focus adjustments won't tell you if it's front focusing. I usually shoot a brick wall at a severe angle with center focus Point, then check if the center Point is in focus or is it focused in front or behind. If you really want to know if the lens itself (meaning glass alignment) is flawed, manually focus using focus peaking and see if you can get a sharp image. If you can, then it likely needs autofocus adjustment. If you can't.....

I tend to agree with Stavri re returns. I've bought and sold many lenses on the Forums and never had an issue, and I always offer returns if the lens is not as described, and I'm very careful to describe any worts. I do not, however, accept returns if someone just had expectations beyond what I described. As a seller, I take some financial responsibilities that I can't recover (such as shipping) so I won't take returns simply for buyer's remorse. There needs to be something wrong with the lens that I missed. If you can Identify a flaw that wasn't disclosed, seller should accept a return and refund.

help on deciding between UWA's

I had the Sigma 8-16, DA 15mm and the DA 12-24 (some would ask if I was obsessed with UWA). All 3 are terrific and I used all of them quite a bit. For me, ultimately, I found the convenience of the zooms made them the more-used options. They both flare when pointed towards the sun, though, and that's when I went to the prime (or night when looking for starbursts). The DA 12-24 in the end became my go-to lens and was the last one I sold before going ff. With that said, if you were happy with the results from your 10-20, just get another as it should be a little cheaper than the other options I mentioned.

Possible DFA 70-200 Decentering

I don't need a prime, the zoom suits me. With that said, when laying out almost $1800 for a lens with a reputation for being sharp across the frame wide open and I see an indication mine might not be, I think I'm justified in at least asking the question.

Thanks to the responders for the info. I missed the bit in the blog about the test being center of frame. This was exactly what I needed to know to insure I test the lens correctly.

Yes, this is the test I did, but what I'm not sure about is whether the test holds across the entire image circle or only center of frame. When set up in the center of the frame I see no flare. When set up in the bottom right corner I see flare and this is also where I see softness wide open.

Here's my brick wall shot (1st) and crops in center, bottom left and bottom right corners. The center looks sharp and bottom left looks pretty darn close, but there is some noticeable falloff in the bottom right corner. Shot at 70mm, f2.8. This caused me to do the decentering test. In the center the circle remained round as I turned the focus ring. Bottom left stayed pretty close to circular but not as clean as the center. Bottom right went from round in focus to stretching out into an oval as I turned the focus ring.

In the crops, the right corner doesn't look terrible and I'm sure if I stopped down a little the whole frame would sharpen up. Hoping I can get some feedback as to whether or not this looks like enough I need to return for another copy. It's a big investment so I want to get it right.

Sorry, should have been more specific. These are intentionally unfocused. I used the lens rental.com test where you focus on the center of a star chart, then slowly defocus to see if you get an even round blur (not decentered) or does the center circle of the start chart blur in such that the center circle changes shape from round (oval in the third) which would indicate decentering. First lens I've actually seen this but hoping someone else who's done this test can confirm I'm not making a mistake.

Hi everyone. Just received a new DFA 70-200 and was running it thru some tests. I noticed when I shot a brick wall the left edge looked a little mushy. Double-checked autofocus and it's spot on no calibration required, so I went to my star chart. Attached are 3 photos of the star chart, 1st with centre of chart dead center of lens, 2nd bottom left corner, 3rd bottom right corner. The 1st looks like blurring as I defocused was pretty round and as expected but both corners showed the center of the star going oval as I defocused (right side worse than left side, consistent with the brick wall shot). Can someone confirm whether this looks decentered as I suspect? If so I'll swap it. Thanks
