K3 vs K3 ii for wildlife

I hope no-one minds me saying this.... Pentax has many amazing attributes and I love my camera. But you mention AF tracking is a priority for you. That isn't Pentax's strong suit. If you don't already have a lot of Pentax lenses - it might be better to look at a NIkon body.

They may lack some of the high end image quality features of Pentax - but they can be found with weather sealing and the consensus seems to be they have the best AF for wildlife.

That said I've happily taken pictures of stationary birds from my canoe using the K-S2. I wouldn't fancy my chances with them in flight though.

Pentax Mirrorless?

At the time, a great many people complained at length about more than just the design - the lack of an EVF (even as an option), the lack of a tilt screen, the substandard video, the slow AF performance (or complete failure to AF with some long lenses), the high launch price. The styling was just one problem of many - and quite a few people seemed to be able to tolerate, even like, the design - at a (much) lower price point.

Sony had a smaller mirrorless (NEX-5 series) at a lower price (launch price about the same as the K-01 after the six-month price reduction). It was superior in all of these areas, AND it could use a much wider range of vintage lenses - changing the styling of the K-01 still would have produced a product that compared poorly to the competition. A bigger battery and compatibility with (some) K-mount AF lenses would not have made up the difference.

Waiting for the K-3 mark III. Just build on the greatness. Keep the same amount of megapixels, higher buffer rate, faster autofocus, and better low light performance. I love to shoot the performing arts and another stop would give me more flexibilty. Better video wouldn't hurt although it's not a priority for what I shoot.

Same here, when I bought the GR I started looking for one of those hotshoe viewfinders. Then I realized I didn't need one. Not having one immediately made me adopt another way of taking pictures, that I like a lot. It won't work for every kind of photography, but it suits my street-casual-non-pro style very well.

While I was considering a "Q", a guy here tried to convince me that the right shirt or the right hat would fix everything - but my Q-7 is unusable in sunlight. I will never purchase another camera without a viewfinder. The GR series seems to have its devotees - which is good for Ricoh, and irrelevant to me.

Pentax Mirrorless?

Market decline or not Pentax needs to get its share back, currently Sigma is not even bothering to release its latest lenses with a K mount and Zeiss stopped ZK lenses 10yrs ago.
Cost is the major factor a FF 36MP sensor and adapters to use existing Kaf lenses will need to sell for similar price to Sony and Sigma equivalents. The camera needs to have a good EVF, autofocus, articulating LCD and the traditional quality build of Pentax, which is what Sony are not so good at.
As Wheatfield illustrates even he a long term Pentaxian sees advantages and is using a non-Pentax mirrorless cameras ( while I preserve with my SMC Takumars on the K-01).
The advantage of being able to use old Glass itself will help promote the camera to long termer's even if they don’t do it. With up to date convenient features in a quality body it will draw a share of converts dissatisfied with over heating poorly seal cameras and blue photos, as well as first time buyers. Pentax does have thereputation of quality and true color, remember the reviews when K 1came out. The pentaprism will die out along with the Oldies just as Black and White did in the 60’s they did not convert.

As others have pointed out, the DFA macro WR is extremely comparable to the 77. At least in regards to rendering. It's a bit larger (not much), takes forever to focus (and cannot focus in live view to save itself), and is WR.

I prefer using the 77, actually, at least on full frame. I can crop if needed, I get a faster aperture, faster AF. Of course when you need a macro you need a macro!

a Full-Frame System MILC to boost Pentax market share...

Biz-engineer is right. The weakness of the K-01 was the lack of an EVF (and, of course, its price at launch). There was nothing wrong with the body itself. In fact, many of us rather enjoyed holding it. Pentax could give us most of the milc advantages but still retain the k-mount.

Could be. When talking about MILC, everyone assumes that it require a change of the lens mount. But the fact is, removing a mirrorbox and replacing the prism by an EVF module does the trick with regards to the benefits of EVF (manual focusing and overlaid information directly in the EVF). Pentax could make such body. About the K01? The thing that was missing on the K01 was the EVF because when shooting outdoor on a sunny day, looking at the back LCD wasn't really an option.

If Pentax releases a new mirrorless mount it is unlikely to be FF, more likely APS-C.

And I doubt it will be named Pentax. It will more likely be based on the GR, so Ricoh. The GXR was a failed concept, but innovative.

More Limited lenses

We all want Pentax to produce very good lenses but these days they are too small to produce more than a handful. They simply can’t cover the whole field even if they wanted to. People can see this and know it will take many years to produce a full lineup of modern motorised lenses, so either they don’t buy into the system or they move away because what they want isn’t available either from the first party or from a third party. It’s hard to see this as a happy situation. The kicker is time, the time required to build out a good offer before changes in the camera market undermine it or loss of users becomes too high.

I see this as a race and I do think that some more third-party support would swing the odds more in Pentax’s favour. Confidence is absolutely key. People buy into a system over several years but to do that they need to feel the system will grow and meet their needs. What that means is they want the lenses to be there even if they aren’t going to buy them any time soon. That’s tough to swallow if you are a head office beancounter but any market trader will tell you that a full stall moves goods faster than a half empty one. Confidence is king.

Go for it! And while you're at it, how about putting a bug in the ear of third party lens manufacturers. They don't seem to have gotten the message either.

But as I dont know what im talking about I will shut up and leave you guys to it.... You obviously enjoy paying out for expensive solutions,,,,

Which Pentax (K) 135mm for Film Bodies
Posted By fwcetus

Which is why the Takumar Bayonet so-called 135/"2.5" may really be an f/2.8 lens. [135mm / 2.5 = 54mm, while 135mm / 2.8 = 48mm.] [And 52mm filter threads allow for probably only 49mm or 50mm (at the most) of clear front aperture.]

But back to the original question, "Which Pentax (K) 135mm for Film Bodies", my vote would be for the outstanding K 135/2.5.

Nissin i40 flash for Nikon on a Pentax?

You can always put electrical tape over the pins if you're worried about some Pentax/Nikon cross talk, it's just the central pin and the contacts on the side that need to make contact for manual mode.

For what it's worth, I've used a few Nikon models on my Pentax with no tape or any sign of trouble (SB-24/26/28/80DX), so I'd be pretty cavalier about mounting a wrong brand modern flash on my camera. Alright, alright, I'd also play it safe and test it on one of Gene's older bodies first, but I wouldn't take any other precautions:D.

What to expect from new DFA 50mm f/1.4 and DFA 85mm

Don't the first party brand lenses almost always cost more than the Sigma equivalent? I expect the Pentax 50mm and 85mm to cost more than the Sigma or Tamron equivalents, but less than the Nikon flagship lenses of that FoV+aperture.

I'm not sure this is true. Yes, the massive Ziess Otus and Sigma Art lenses are sharper than pretty much anything else available. But many other lenses can still reach the 36MP sensors quite well.

And Pentax has had the DFA 50mm f2.8 (really sharp, highly corrected optics) and the FA 50mm f1.4 and the DA* 55mm f1.4 (Silent focusing, WR, QS, very sharp), FA 43mm ltd (known for pixie dust, nice character, and more than decent sharpness) available for a long time now. And the super-affordable 50mm f1.8. Sometimes Pentaxians are like the stereotypical women standing in front of a closet full of clothes and saying "waah, I don't have anything to wear!"

I hate Adobe (rant)

I held off for a year before subscribing to the CC photographer edition.
$10 a month for Photoshop and LR, plus I can install them on two difference machines which is nice.

I dislike the whole micro-transaction era we're in right now, but this one from Adobe is okay with me...
At least they're not trying to sell us $0.99 features after we already paid for the software.

Think about the gaming industry:
They sell you a $60 game - 10 years ago that would have been it.
But now they will develop a game, then lock a few doors, or remove a few bridges so you literally cannot access parts of the in-game world.
You still pay $60, but now to unlock that door or get to that area you have to pay another $20. But there's more! A new map pack is coming out and if you want to be able to join your friends online to play you need to all have the map pack - another $15 each.

By the time you purchase the entire suite, it's now more like $140 compared to the original $60.

There are still a few companies that provide free updates to their games. But in the end they can get away with it because the majority of people will pay.
If they lose 5% of customers by doing this but end up making an 8% margin on profit, they win.

I decided to power read the entire thread and got stuck on this piece of advice.
I am sure the poster is well meaning but I would strongly advise against it. (It is also a classic paralipsis statement)

I must admit I have breathed on the front lens to help cleaning, but never the rear lens assembly of a zoom lens. Breath will collect inside the barrel.

The problem of course is, in order to fog up the sensor with your breath one has to go very close, you breathe into an enclosed cavity and this means all your breath is collected inside the mirror chamber.

Firstly you very likely shoot a bit of spittle even if you are careful and secondly you fill the mirror box with moist warm organic traces laden matter. Exactly the stuff fungus thrives on ! Don't do it !

Certainly don't do it after you just consumed a salami sandwich, salami is very hard to get off the sensor.
