As an aside... my wife's family is from York... hence walking the streets and around the walls... and those of us born along the banks of the Tyne take issue with all you southerners saying you're from Northern England...

No we didn't make it to Jorvik... and yes we saw a lot of people walking along the tow path... a lot of the time making better progress than we were... opening and closing all those locks really slows you down!

We walked the centre section of Hadrian's Wall (Chollerford to Lanercost) and then spent a few days aboard a canal boat out of Sowerby Bridge.

You could very well be correct... I've never tried to roll back firmware versions, but had always assumed I cold if wanted to...

Does anyone have a copy of the 1.10 firmware? I seem to have misplaced the card it was on... and I like being able to roll-back the firmware in case something goes bad after an update

How useful is K-70 flip screen?

I think the articulated screen is a great thing to have, but not necessarily a "must have".

Not having had one until I got my K-70 prior to going to Australia about this time last year, I didn't realize what I was missing. Trying to capture a picture of a Wallaby over a high fence or some flowers at ground level without an articulated screen would have been challenging to even frame the shot. With the screen... piece of cake.

Having said that, if the camera doesn't have the bits inside it to be a credible tool, then no screen no matter how good... will help.

I'm pleased with my K-70 and the screen is a nice step up from the K-30 I traded it in for.

Anyone done this update?

I'm leaving on a trip next week and admit to being a bit reluctant to update firmware just before leaving.

Yep... all the same voltage when not under load... but when you start sucking power out of them, cheaper batteries with less capacity may experience more of a voltage drop (like all batteries do) than the higher capacity version... and under voltage makes electronics very grumpy!

There are a couple types of disposable lithium AA batteries out there. I had good luck with the Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries (silver wrapper with a blue stripe) in my K-30, but didn't have much luck with a cheaper set of disposable lithium AAs... the cheaper ones didn't seem to have enough juice to power the camera for very long.

As for pre-charged rechargeable batteries... they tend to slowly drain over time. Unless you got a really fresh set, they may have already reached the point of needing to be charged. Modern digital devices are very sensitive to under-voltage power supplies and it doesn't take much for a battery to drop below that "magic" voltage particularly when you start pulling power out of it.

Unlubricated ones make ideal containers for all sorts of small electronic devices... and are useful for preventing debris from getting into a shotgun or rifle barrel out in the field...

Some nice shots there... I too had some frustration trying to get my hands on a K-70... but eventually bit the bullet and had the local Kerrisdale Camera store special order in a pair of K-70 bodies for me and traded my two K-30 bodies in. It took just shy of three weeks from placing the order until I got the telephone call that they had arrived in the store...picked them up on Saturday... had me biting my nails as I leave for Australia in 8 days!

I played with a couple 35mm range-finders borrowed from my father in the mid 70s... but the first camera I bought for myself after having saved up allowances and odd-job money was a Pentax MV c.1980... it lasted me until the early 1990s when I drifted away from photography... I sure wish I had been smart enough to keep the glass...

Yeah... walking around Ayers Rock/Uluru in February was not the best of choices... we (my much better half and I) started at first light and carried 6L of water between us... we finished by 10:00 and had drained every drop of water... and it was already topping 40 degrees... but as you say... it's a dry heat!
