They are enabled without a lens mounted in Sv mode (at least for me)…? But that is weird.

Pentax PF-100ED Spotting Scope

I (also) have the PF-80ED A with the zoom eyepiece. It's great. I think their best binoculars and scopes are quite good, and a step above similarly priced competition. You can buy the PF-100ED in the US again, after a few years when it wasn't available here. I think you do need a prime eyepiece to experience what this scope can really do. But with the zoom eyepiece the view is great down to about 10mm. If you haven't used a spotting scope before, you will be amazed at the view. The view through a good spotting scope is so much better than even great binoculars. You will need a tripod of course, preferably with a pan head (IMO).

I might be missing something, but looking at the video frame above, you can see that the view is scrolled to the bottom. This info “page” is actually two pages tall. For one of my GPS’d images they look like this:

And this:

So maybe you just need to scroll down?

I just tried it on my k-3iii; it only took a couple (<5) seconds to bring up the thumbnail selection screen. But I only have about 70 images on a fast card, and no images on the other card in the camera…

I wonder what the time taken to get to the thumbnail screen is dependent on?
  • Number of images on the card - probably; the camera seems to include all of the images on the selected card in the the thumbnail screen - i.e. it doesn't limit it's work to the selected folder…

  • Speed of the card - probably

  • Number of cards - maybe not.

Thanks for the report. It is surprising that it should take so long to perform this task, at least to me.

To 150-450 or not to 150-450?

For what it’s worth, I’ve had my copy since 2015. I try to baby it, but I’ve probably hiked a couple hundred miles with it, quite a bit of that hanging from a strap. The paint is worn through on the tripod lock knob. It has spent time in the rain. And, to my horror, I dropped it onto a hardwood floor from a height of about a meter at the beginning of last month. It wasn’t mounted on a camera, thank goodness, but it landed hard enough to knock the hood (which was mounted reversed) off, and twist the arca compatible lens plate that was attached to the foot, which I could not straighten by hand. It bounced, and slid across the floor. The bounce make a loud thud, not as loud as my scream “OH, NO!”.

I know I was lucky, but I have found absolutely no issues with the lens. No dent, no loose screws or other parts. The AF seems the same a before (which means accurate and quick), no image degradation that I can identify. Nothing. I can not see or observe any damage at all. I’m still amazed.

If there was an actual design flaw, I would expect I would have two pieces of 150-450mm lens. I only have one. I would rather suggest a manufacturing defect is to blame for the issues a few people have seen.

Sorry, I’m not disputing the issues that other users have experienced. I’m just claiming that the 150-450mm lens is a fundamentally sound product.

For what it's worth, I've been wanting to make these images for over 40 years, since the first time I saw a hummingbird. I finally have a camera and lens that can make them.

I’ve had 5 (!) copies of the old version: first one was great, gave it to a friend and bought a replacement. The SDM failed on that one in less than 3 months, sent it for service. Got an obviously refurbished copy (that was no good) in return, and after another unacceptable refurbished replacement and some angry email exchanges ended up with a brand new replacement (since the original was gone). Eventually, after several years, SDM failed again, and I had it repaired. At that point, I sold it. The IQ was never great, AF was slow and unreliable on my cameras of the time, and the 16-85mm was better than any of the 16-50s I had owned. I bought the K-10D because that lens was on the roadmap, and it was always a disappointment. Until I got rid of it.

I also got a $200 off offer from Ricoh for the new version, about a month ago (because I had reviewed the K-3III on their US site), and bought it right away. I’ll eventually post some photos, but it is pretty sharp at all apertures and focal lengths, AF is really fast (faster than the 55-300 PLM?), and I am so far happy with the purchase. The only downsides are size and weight; together with the K-3III, it makes for a large and heavy standard setup, and I do almost all of my shooting outdoors hiking.

On the other hand, your phone always knows where it is, even (mostly) where you’re indoors. So location data is more available, more quickly (with different accuracy) with Image Sync on your smart phone than using built-in GPS or the O-GPS1. To me, even as an owner of the O-GPS1, Image Sync based location data is a big win.

GPS data should be easily available from your iOS or Android phone without touching it once the two devices are paired. While it won't provide directional data, it should provide location data even indoors, or other places where GPS is not available. Location data should be available via low-power bluetooth, which I don't expect to seriously affect the phone's battery life or the battery life of the K-3 Mark III. To me, at least, this is a better solution except for when I want to use the AstroTracer feature.

Initial Manufacturer's List Price of Recent APS-C Flagship Cameras1

Pentax K-3 Mark III $1999 April 2021
OM-D E-M1 Mark III $1800 Feb 2020
Fujifilm X-T4 $1699 Feb 2020
Fujifilm X-T3 $1499 Sept 2018
Fujifilm X-H1 $1900 Feb 2018
Nikon D500 $2000 Jan 2016
Canon 7D Mark II $1799 Sept 2014

I just don't see how the K-3 Mark III is out of line with these. They have some tech the K-3 Mark III doesn't, and the K-3 Mark III has some tech they don't. Maybe you can't or don't want to afford it, but the pricing just doesn't seem out of line to me.
