Lens advice: 31mm limited vs. hd 35mm f2.8 macro limited

To answer your question, I do have experience with both, having written both lenses' reviews here ;)

The comments I make about both lenses remain valid even if they were not reviewed at the same time. You can directly compare sharpness, bokeh, aberrations, distortion, etc.

My own opinion is that the 31 offers more beautiful images, while the 35 macro is more versatile.

I somewhat disagree with this. Everyone has to start somewhere and make their first sale.

Paying with Paypal offers buyer protection, so I'm never overly worried about sketchy purchases. I also use a CC when paying via paypal, so I have double layers of protection.

You are right. That is why I wrote in bold, red underlined text that there are risks. I also pointed out which steps were more critical.

Just because there can be risks of damage should not mean that no one should attempt it...

Strap Me Better...

Having used a lot of strap systems over the years, the best system I've seen, by far, is the Peak Design. Their strap is excellent, they also offer the Capture Clip which is wonderful (and has made me realize how little I want to use a strap, in fact...)

I communicated with them prior to making this to ask if it was possible to attach an Anchor Link to their hand strap, they said they did not go this way because the Anchor link came in contact with the hand and it wasn't very comfortable.

I beg to differ, as I find my setup very comfortable in use.

In this we fully agree, and that's what I wrote above.

Averaging a large number of opinions gives a better estimation of the lens' rating. Also, nowadays the forum supports numbered evaluations of several items, including price, and those items are significantly more useful than the blanket rating.

I agree with your first sentence, which means I disagree with the second. The points system is informative, but like everything else, it has limits. For instance, if a lens is rated excellent by everyone, it's interesting to go and read why one person rated it as poor.

The same applies to "pro" reviews. The ratings are ONE element in a review, but the accompanying text has more value. When I perform a 14 pages lens review, I certainly hope people don't simply look at the ratings and "pros and cons" but look at the whole thing.

I love the Peak Design system, mostly the Capture Clip. Their strap is excellent but using the Clip showed me how I enjoyed having no strap.

I decided to use a hand strap instead, but I'm not a fan of their strap design (too long to remove). So I invented my own, with a pair of Anchor Links and a cheap leather strap from eBay. In addition to being comfortable and sturdy, it's fashionably elegant ;)

If the minister of finances approves the budget, spend it or it will be cut next year...

What if you never use it again? Just sell it.

You will.

It is ;)

Having tested thoroughly both lenses, I confirm that, as good as the 35 is, the 31 is leagues ahead except maybe for corner sharpness. The main difference concerns rendering, where the 31 is hard to beat, especially at that focal length (the 77 is the lens I would say renders even better).

If you want it and can afford it, it's money well spent, especially at that price.

Correct. Recommendations will vary accordingly.

apart from the size of the body itself, what you ask for is not that uncommon, a K-1 with a 70-200 mounted would be a "bigger" challenge so it's mainly a matter of knowing what you are looking for.

Yes, there are portraits in the other lenses' galleries- lots of them.

There's a limited number of pictures that can be taken in a short time with a lens. Luckily I own the 43 and 77 so I have more pictures to choose from. I also include willing users' pictures to flesh out the galleries.

You can always use the site's search engine to find more samples of any lens you want.

It's almost watercolor in its look. I'd say it's a good one. Sharpness of the in-focus area is hard to judge at this size, but colors, bokeh definitely are good!

Thank you very much! The 43 and 77 will be along in the near future I hope.

I'd say my experience matches yours. although I love most of my lenses, and most are near the top of their categories (apart from the 16-85, I only have Limited and STAR lenses) but the 77 is probably the nicest of the lot.

Hyperfocal distance in APSC mode?

That is incorrect. The camera does just that.

Correct, but not for the reasons you mention.

You are contradicting yourself. APS-C is a crop, like it or not.

Mostly correct.

You are again incorrect.

The ONLY way that the sensor itself influences DOF is relative to the size of its pixels. Smaller pixels are able to resolve smaller details, all other things being equal. The size of the pixels define the circle of confusion, which is the largest circle in the object plane that will be seen as a point in the image plane. So for vastly different pixel sizes, the sensor WILL influence the DOF.

The other two parameters influencing the DOF (indeed, the parameters dominating the effect) are focal length and aperture. Those are not linked to the sensor.

Neither here nor there. Larger formats are interesting because they can give you the a wider field of view for a given focal length, that's all.

It was an easy guess...

I've worked at Exfo for 5 years in Quebec city before moving to another other optics company (not telecom this time).

Suggestion Add Warranty Terms to Product Reviews

The "in the box" section already includes warranty duration.

I'm not convinced that adding details about the warranty would be such a good idea. First, pentaxforums is not responsible for the warranty and I wouldn't want to imply as such or even come close to.. Second, the warranty card is included with all products.

Discussions in the forums seems like the best course.

That's just my two cents ;)

How much does the 150-450mm sell for, used? That would be the obvious choice.

Otherwise, without knowing the reputation of the 400mm, you have a few options : get a used Sigma 400mm F5.6 for less than 200$ (probably not as good optically, but pretty decent), get a F* or FA* 300mm F4.5 and either crop or use a TC, get a FA* 400mm (more expensive but it's a star lens), get a third-party 300mm and TC, get a DA* 300mm and crop or use a TC. There are probably other possible solutions. Comparison will depend on the actual IQ of that Canon, plus your will to support two systems, lose SR, WR, etc.

Super-telephoto a pipe dream on Pentax FF?

That's a case by case basis, dictated mostly by the launch date of the camera and not the size of its sensor.

Hum, not really. See the K-3 vs K-1, for instance. All things being equal, smaller files yield faster fps. Again it's mostly a case by case basis, you can build a fast-shooting camera regardless of its sensor, it's a shutter and buffer issue.

That I agreed upon above. I'll point out, however, that you're better off with this year's APS-C than three years ago's FF.

Getting "closer" is easier with APS-C's crop factor.

And yet you're basing your opinion on some people you follow on the internet who use FF and say it's better (or maybe don't say anything at all but simply use FF?)

DOF is linked to the pixel size (because that drives the circle of confusion value) but otherwise is dictated by the focal length and aperture, not the sensor size.
