If Pentax made a HD DA 28mm f/2.8 Limited......

Just about all threads where someone wishes for a certain lens for APS-C get hijacked by people saying "hey, why don't we just make it FF? It'll only double the price and weight".

It's an argument that makes absolutely no sense.

Why shouldn't APS-C shooters have lenses designed for their systems rather than for a different one?

Ther eare too many old 28/2.8s out there for a DA limited to sell much, I think.

I'd very seriously consider a 28mm f/2 though, or even better, a 30mm f/2 DA limited.

Here's the single shot I took with the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 yesterday before switching to the 18-55 WR for the rest of the outing. This shot is much sharper with better contrast that the kit lens shots but it was still snowing so I didn't want to risk using a non-WR lens.

I disagree on the second point but I suppose it depends on your attitude to photography while travelling. To me, travelling is a fantastic opportunity for photography and I want to have good gear in order to maximise the quality of the photos I can get and minimise frustration at not having the equipment for the situation. However, if your travel photography really is just snap-shots then by all means use the kit lens.

I'd say that the second reason to keep the kit lenses is weather resistance, assuming you have the WR versions. If your kit lenses are not WR then I'd suggest selling the non-WR and buying the WR. It depends on where you live and travel, but my 18-55mm WR has made the difference between getting photos (even good ones) and getting no photos at all because I'd have had to keep the gear hidden away in a waterproof backpack.

PLM autofocusing, is it really that fast?

Wow!

At first I thought the PLM lens wasn't working because it wasn't doing anything, just instantly beeping, but the viewfinder view - talk about jumping into focus.

I've never been impressed by my SMC 55-300 and am not a user of slow tele-zooms, but that PLM lens looks great if it can focus that quickly.

Another focus motor? So that'll be four by my count - SDM, DC, PLM and this new one. Pentax should concentrate on replacing old lens designs (such as the DA*s), especially the focus motors used, rather than bringing out new ones.

Well done. I've also added another MX to my collection this year but it's only my second, the first being the first film SLR I ever bought, when I started using film back in 2012 (I think).

Pentax MV1 with M 50mm f/4 macro, arrived yesterday.

Pentax MV-1 with M 50mm f/4 macro
by Jonathan MacDonald, on Flickr

Amazingly the camera seems to work, it even came with batteries in it. I will need to test it for meter accuracy, which won't be too easy given that it has almost no indication of the shutter speed.

The lens is very nice - extremely compact for a macro, but I suppose that's due to being only 1:2 and f/4.

Well done - I think that's the first time I've ever seen the 15mm used for gig photography, maybe even the first time I've seen any limited other than the 77mm used for that purpose.

I haven't owned mine for long and have barely used it, but my christmas day walk with it was enough to convince me to take it as my main lens to Italy next week. It is a heavy item and doubtless that's largely down to the constant f/2.8, but the Tamron also has that and is considerably lighter, so I put the weight down to it's great build quality, something the Tamron lacks.

the limiteds do they live up to the reputation and why

I own all the DA limited primes and I think they are slower than the FA limiteds purely to keep costs down. Someone will come along and say that large apertures are not necessary with digital, which is nonesense.

As for living up to their reputations, I would say:

15mm - no, it doesn't
21mm - yes
35mm - performace far exceeds even it's great reputation
40mm - yes
70mm - yes, maybe even exceeds it because it's often ignored as a fantastic telephoto landscape lens

M 120mm f/2.8. I tried several programs but was completely unable to get rid of the strong green fringing, which can be seen even in this small version (around the tree just behind the deer.

Kit lenses are rarely going to shine, it's one of the big problems with getting into good cameras - the lenses that come with them usually are not that great and leave people wondering why they are not seeing the leap in image quality that they expected.

The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is the lens that I usually recommend to beginners as a replacement for the 18-55mm kit lens. It's fast, has a good range, focuses very close for a standard zoom and has excellent image quality. Make sure that your copy focuses correctly - sometimes they need focus micro-adjustment to focus accurately but sometimes micro-adjustment isn't enough, in which case you'll need to change it for a different copy.

I've recently got a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and that's also very good, maybe even better than the Tamron, but more expensive. If you're will to spend more I'd probably recommend that over the Tamron.

However, since you've mentioned the 35mm f/2.8 limited as something you're interested in, that changes things. That's my favourite lens ever - it's well-built, fast, has 1:1 macro and astounding image quality. Most people wouldn't get a prime as their first non-kit lens but if you're happy with not being able to zoom then there simply isn't a better lens you could get for your K-S2.

This is not an authorised repair facility but they did un-jam the AF of my DA 40mm limited very effectively and at a reasonable price a year ago. It's a small place hidden away in central Madrid, Spain.

They have quite a long waiting list which I take to indicate that they are in demand and therefore good.

I have reached a certain point in my LBA where I have learned the real sale value of so many lenses that when I see lenses for sale that I don't need (don't need = already have, or an item very, very similar) I buy them anyway if they're under-priced so that I can sell them on at a profit (to be spent on more lenses, naturally).

I know I'm not alone in this zone of LBA.

Tamron 28-75mm Portraits at f2.8?

I'm not sure if it will be "better" - it will provide more subject isolation at 75mm than the 17-50mm can at 50mm, but I don't think it will be sharper. Bokeh may be different.

The only B&W film with those high sensitivities that I'm aware of and still in production is Ilford Delta 3200, which is really an ISO 1000 film.

Tri-X pushes to 1600 very nicely - others have pushed it to 3200 or more - the example below is 1600.
