Last weekend, I went to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in Bristol. As might be expected, almost all the photographs were taken with a Canon or Nikon DSLR. Mirrorless entries were few and far between (I noticed one Sony). I don't think any were taken with a Pentax, sadly.

I realise this is a sterotytpical generalisation, and, as you know, it is possible to be somewhere in between the examples given. I love photographic gear, and I do read and watch a lot of reviews, but I also love taking photographs, and working in Photoshop. There is room for us all in the world, and I help Pentax by buying cameras and lenses new, rather than second hand all the time.

P.S. the only times I have taken pictures of a brick wall is to use for 'shopping in a background or two. I couldn't care less about how straight the bricks are.

The answer is there in your words, really. A music aficionado wouldn't be satisfied with a phone to pursue their hobby, no more than a serious photographer would. Of course, both may use phones occasionally just for the convenience of it. I agree also about the TV experience, but while I have high acuity vision (with spectacles), my hearing is poor, so an expensive sound system to accompany my 4K TV would be wasted on me, alas. As a general observation, if one is passionate about a hobby, one always spends more than one needs to, and acquires far more gear than is sensible. Or am I describing just me?

I agree with you to a large extent: I have some understanding of how businesses work, and how unprofitable parts of a business are at risk of closure or sell-off to boost profits and dividends. I was talking about the current situation, and this, coupled with the fact that Ricoh has a long established camera division, means that I see no immediate need for pessimism. However, this may not always be the case, as with any business.

Many others on this forum are much more knowledgeable about the factors that affect the prospects of the Pentax brand, but I am optimistic that it will continue into the foreseeable future. Like most other brands, Pentax is a part of an imaging division within a much larger corporation (Ricoh). As such, the decline in camera sales does not affect much of the company, and as another has mentioned, Pentax cameras and lenses are a niche product with a loyal following. From what I can make out, the imaging division does not currently appear to be a drain on the corporation's resources, hence I see no present reason for Ricoh to shut it down.

I would beg to differ. The D850 is an amazing camera (as was the D810 before it). I sold mine only because I gravitated to 20-24 megapixel cameras and didn't need it any longer. I keep my K-1 for when I absolutely need more pixels, but that is increasingly rarely these days.

Maybe a few more people have heard of Pentax now that DP Review issued a couple of videos about the brand last week, even going as far as to call it "Pentax Week". The videos were entertaining, and Chris Niccols refrained from making snide remarks about our beloved brand. I think he sneakily likes Pentax.

The only thing that will persuade me to buy the new K is if it has much improved autofocus. I love my K-1 and K-3 II, but my hit rate with my Panasonic G9s and my Nikon Z6 is noticeably higher. And here I'm talking about studio portraits, not erratically moving subjects. I live in hope.

Some sweet shots in there. There is a Pentax-A* 85 mm f1.4 for sale on ebay for around 650.... I am very tempted.

I have recently acquired the 20 mm, and though I haven't had much chance to use it yet, it looks like an excellent optic. I almost bought the 50mm f1.2 from the forum marketplace but, to my eternal regret, I had to pull out because of a sudden unplanned expense. I have never seen the others. I do see the FA 85 mm f1.4 regularly on eBay, and as portraiture is my main interest, I am often tempted, but I don't know how it stands up against modern optics. Do I get one now, or wait for the mythical D-FA 85 mm f1.4 on the lens map? Advice will be gratefully received. Should Pentax ever make a new 85mm it will be a no-brainer for me.

Nikon D lenses are screw driven, and you are correct to say the lower order bodies cannot autofocus with them. Some of the newer E (for electronic aperture) designated lenses will not set aperture on older DSLRs. As for physical damage, I think this arises only with old non-AiS lenses. The Nikon Df has a small lever device by the lens mount, which has to be raised to use these lenses without causing damage. I am not aware of any other Nikon DSLR that has this feature.

Yes, I'm afraid you are right. I just did a recount, and I have 36 K mount lenses, including those on the cameras in my collection. I have 14 Pentax K mount bodies, though, does that count? :)

I beg to differ. Though I have several full frame cameras, M43 serves me well in all but a handful of situations. Some of the lenses are outstanding (Panasonic Leica 42.5 mm f1.2 Nocticron and Olympus 75 mm f1.8 to give but two examples) and at moderate ISO levels (up to ISO 800) it is very hard to tell the difference between photographs taken with my G9 and those with my K-1. I can think of areas where micro four-thirds will perform less well than a full frame system, but these are usually outside my photography needs. I can also think of areas where the G9 is better than my K-1. YMMV according to your type of photography, of course.

Thank you. I don't have the 15-30 or 70-200, so it's interesting to see your take on them. I am tempted by the Lensbaby 85mm, and I suppose I ought to get one as they are being discontinued in K mount. I have the Sigma 180 mm f3.5 Macro, but in Nikon mount. It is very sharp with a good working distance, but it is heavy.
