Thank you. They are not that hard to do really. You just need some interesting artefacts, a tripod, two off camera flashes with home made snoots and diffusers, a wireless flash trigger, some plain black velvet. Set your camera to its flash sync speed, an aperture of f 8 or 11, and experiment with different flash outputs and positions

What's stopping me from buying the Voigtlander SL II 40mm f2 in PKA mount?

You may have something there!

Very eloquently put!

---------- Post added 05-17-20 at 02:53 PM ----------

I think I have worked out reasons for my hesitation:-
1.I consider the original SL to be a more beautifully constructed lens. However the only one available right now is priced at around 550 before any VAT I would also have to pay at 20%. As I only paid c.250 each for my M42 and F copies of the same lens, I think this value is somewhat optimistic. The SLII models are more reasonably priced but I would rather have the original.
2. I would primarily use it for film, but opportunities for film photography are somewhat curtailed by the lockdown at the moment
I will eventually get a copy I reckon but I think it wiser to wait until the current situation plays out, unless a bargain should appear.

On APSc your 50mm will be a FOV equivalent of 75mm - in my opinion much more useful.

No, no other lens I would rather buy. I think you may be right:- pre-purchase cold feet. It is rather more expensive than I would usually spend on a lens.

I have long thought that I wanted copy of this lens, or it earlier SL manifestation. I already have the earlier model in M42 and Nikon F, which I love on my film bodies. A few are available from Japan at the moment and I have hesitated and hesitated many times over pulling the trigger. My rationale for wanting the Pentax version is that it makes an ideal wide standard lens for my ME Super and MX bodies and doubles as a long standard for my K3 and KP. I have the money in the bank and would probably sell on my HD DA 40mm Ltd at some point (Ha!Ha! Me selling a lens is a rare event!). I can see no logical reason for my hesitation. I am now becoming disturbed at my self inflicted quandary.

Perhaps some kind Pentaxians can provide some insight......

You may be better off getting an APSc mirrorless camera or a Canon RP. Sony FF (Nikon Z6 and Z7 far too expensive for what they are) have a curved sensor not a flat one, This may be problematic for lenses designed for flat film planes. I have yet to come across a poorly performing 50 - 58mm adapted lens on my Fuji X-T1. They make very good short telephotos.

I saw an attractive young woman carrying a KP last September on a coastal path in Anglesey. I was kicking myself for not bring my own with me that day so we could mutually congratulate ourselves on our choice. I did however give her a cheery wave with my ME Super I was toting!

Nice idea. I provides me with a solution to a problem I have been pondering for a while. I have wanted to incorporate an image of Tenniel's Cheshire Cat (from the original Alice in Wonderland illustrations, into a still life. Now I have the answer!

Other advantages are:-
they can be always available, you can easily control your lighting, you can take them indoors or out, they do not move (unless by wind), a whole range of different lenses can be used effectively, you can control your background.
They are a great subject when most other photographic opportunities are unavailable!
Oh and by the way Kerrowdown, I really like what you are doing with them so far, so carry on!

Oh Dear, I afraid you maybe unaware of the nursery rhyme "Here we go gathering nuts in May". If this is so you will have missed my joke. Its a nonsense rhyme which used to be taught to children in English primary schools:-
Here we go gathering nuts in May, Nuts in May, Nuts in May
Here we go gathering nuts in May on a cold and frosty morning
Forgive me if I am wrong.

Just come across this thread looking for some inspiration. I really like what I am seeing. Here are a few of my favourites achieved using manual off camera flash with home made lighting mods. I believe the effect is known as chiaroscuro or tenebrism, depending upon the amount of shadow detail visible. Chiaroscuro having virtually no shadow detail and tenebrism mininal.

Nice to see something a bit different on this thread. Really like your picture. I would love to go back and re-take it with off camera flash to really subdue the background.

Further reflections on my K3, KP and the "new" Fuji X-T1 and not so new X-E2s.

If you are interested in just one Fuji model, I would plump for the X-T1 over the X-E2(s). It is barely any larger, not much more expensive and has a far superior viewfinder, especially if you are interested in MF lenses. The only downside is the lack of built in flash.
