K-5 professional review: initial comments

I am also curious about in body image stability efficiency (if possible also icw level correction).
- The K-7 and K-5 control vibration in 3 dimensions: Horizontal, Vertical and Rotation
- The K-x, K-r only Horizontal and Vertical

High ISO performance in Low-light conditions with tri-pod is IMHO not typical usage. If I take my camera to a party / bar and want to make a candid picture without flash then it is going to be hand-hold and shutter time / vibration reduction is impacting same fading iso noise.
- But guess it is difficult to test (accurately on short term)

For me, besides WR, dual dail, this might be a main reason to upgrade (in the far future - so no hurry, just technical interest).

How to get an English manual in Japan?

Yeah, I am a Dutch guy in Japan, but my technical English is at comparable level as my Dutch, especially if you compare it to my Japanese...

I had it bought on the internet via a colleague and he informed my that normal shows in Japan only have Japanese. It is about asking for Chinese manual in Belgium or US.

So problem has not been solved, but in the mean time I started playing with the K-x and planning to buy 35 mm F2.4.
- correct focus on manual focus 50 mm F1.4 is a challenge for a newbie like me

My friend bought this Tamron for his Canon camera, I notice a 16-45 on the 2nd hand market, so enjoyed the read.
- Any real comparison shots?

If IQ is more important than Focal length range flexibility the answer is of course the new 35 mm F2.4.
- Focal length can often be corrected for by your feet, but it will take some practise (and time on the job)

Nice photo of lens I am going to buy for sure!!!

Which fast zoom is best match with this prime?
- 50-150 mm F2.8 or 70-200 mm F2.8

PS: I already own the following lenses:
- Tamron 10-24 mm
- Pentax DA 18-55 mm + 50-200 mm (but non-L)
- Pentax M/A 28 mm F2.8, 50 mm F1.4, 135 mm F2.8, 200 mm F4
- Auto macro converter

In the mid/long run maybe also wanting to add
- Fast AF prime: 70-90 mm
- Long AF tele lens: 300 mm
- Macro AF lens, focal length TBC
- Fish Eye: <= 10 mm

With the same beginner user, I strongly doubt the K-r is that much better than K-x.
- Oh, I am also discovering the K-x with several AF as well as MF lenses

Blurry pictures of my A 50 mm F1.4 with full open aperture are not all due to wrong focus, just to narrow focus (wrong aperture).
- IMHO AF is also something you need to learn, some applications require center spot only others Auot 5 or 11...

Most of the fun is in learing how to play with the toy!!!

Pentax K-x or Newer K-r?

Where do you base this very significant improvement on?
- The batteries for K-r require an adaptor, the K-x can directly use rechargable batteries
- HDR, very important...
- Impact of focus point indicators IMHO also highly overrated, 99.7% I use center spot (then beep is fine), 0.3% I use 1 auto out of 5 and don't have time to check which the camera selected either way.

So if money is some what important then I would go for:
- K-x + 18-55 mm + 35 mm F2.4 + Sigma Flash

Instead of (same price range)
- K-r + 18-55 mm

What about the K-5 body makes it "worth" 2x the price of the K-r KIT?

So funny to read that many people here forget to notice the difference between price and costs. Of course the price is higher than the costs, otherwise Pentax would loose money and not be able to invest in better camera's. Better camera for Pentax is also different from better camera for the users, although there of course has to be some overlap. Companies go for maximum profit, which is determined by volume * (price - costs) and a part of the profit needs to be re-invested for the next product to optimize profit.
Companies will try to improve their products on all aspect, but focus will be different per market segment. Entry level has to be "cool" (K-x and K-r in over 100 Color combinations) and (semi)-Professional level has to be "good" (WR, grip, etc), simply to draw attention to steer volume and support price. In parallel companies try to address the costs, which probably indeed explains why FF is not taking off.
Customers mainly complaining about the price is a good sign for Pentax, basicaly the product is very good because many people seem to want it, typically enabling a good margin (delta between price vs costs) at least during the introduction phase. Gosh, the K-3 as well as K-t (or which ever character Pentax picks to follow the r) might be even more better than what Nikon and Canon will come up in APS-c market.

Oh, margins on B&W's are higher than on Skoda, but it took some time to develop the brand name to have customer paying the price premium, but most owners seem to be just happy to pay that premium. I would love to drive one too, but am happy with my Volkswagen. Gosh, I should have mentioned Audi instead of B&W. You know how much Skoda, Seat, Volkswagen and Audi have in common? Why? Lower costs, higher margin, more investment in better cars to fight the competition to gain marketshare in all relevant segments.

In Camera world the same is happening, Sony is doing very well with their sensors, but it takes more to make a good camera...

Buy a K-x, it is about half price of K-r:
- Buy a 200 USD P&S, it is about half price of K-x (1/8-th of K-5!!!)

- I don't care too much about LV, shutter sound not AF point visible in viewfinder
- High ISO of K-r is not better than K-x?

According BIC Camera, the DA 35 mm F2.4 was only to arrive in Nagoya (Japan) by the end of November...

About the High ISO Performance looks like the K-r is almost as good as K-x...
- Better than K-7, but I don't see it is much better than K-x (but better comparison is needed)
