Choosing a lens: Pentax 17-70, 16-85 or sigma 17-70 C

I've had both the DA 17-70 and the Sigma 17-70 C. Each are very good but are different. The Sigma is a little smaller and obviously a little faster at the wide end. The Pentax has a little better color and contrast and I could probably make a case for more consistent metering (that might be due to constant aperture). Both of mine were equally sharp and I never had an SDM problem on the Pentax. I ultimately sold the Pentax as I didn't need both but it was pretty close to a coin flip on which one. Maybe the Sigma being slightly more compact tipped the scales but I was happy with both.

Thanks, Greg... much appreciated. I tried out a E-M5 II in our local store and just couldn't get comfortable without that nice grip. Must be I'm so used to and spoiled by Pentax ergonomics which is pushing me more toward the E-M1. Even with the 12-40/2.8, the weight savings is quite noticeable over my K-3 paired with just about any zoom.

Jonathan, those are very nice. Are the shots SOOC JPEG's or did you take RAW images and develop them yourself? If JPEGs, which color profile are you using? Thanks.

Dear fellow Pentaxians:

Thanks for posting these Olympus and Panasonic images. I always enjoy looking at whatever is posted as it helps me take better images (at least that's what I tell myself). I'm thinking of getting a m4/3 camera to compliment my K-3 which, maybe, someday will be replaced by a K-1. You are the right people to ask as I trust your input as veteran Pentax users.

What's on my potential shopping list right now is the Oly E-M1 which should have some good prices as it's soon to be replaced. Pair that with the Oly 12-40/2.8 or stick to primes? Are there other bodies I should consider? Am I even making sense by looking at this class of camera?

Many thanks.

Looks like Nikon has shut down the "1" line (link)

What Nikon is probably thinking is the entire camera world is moving toward larger sensors now that they have come down in cost. A 1" sensor now is the basis for the evolving P&S camera. With few exceptions (primarily superzooms) smaller sensors are obsoleted by smartphones. Why continue to make an ILC system around a sensor that's now mostly for a high end P&S camera? Ricoh seems to be soldiering on with small a sensor ILC system but they've always marched to the beat of a different drummer... for better or worse

This is going to be tricky for Ricoh. What people love about the FA Ltds is not necessarily what causes a lens to test well. Putting out three new lenses will mean in depth reviews with all kinds of numbers and graphs and, potentially, poor comments. Does Ricoh desire to redesign these lenses to what reviewers like or to keep their "character"? It might be hard if not impossible to do both.

Ricoh were ahead of the crowd for getting out of the segment that has caused the most losses for camera makers... P&S or similar. Many others are still in it and it's hurting their performance. How many years ago did the MX-1 disappear?

I imagine most investors couldn't care less Ricoh is in the camera business and those that do care probably wonder why they are in it at all.

Ricoh are likely perceiving, and probably correctly, that Nikon view the 1" sensor route as a dead end. I doubt Ricoh goes that direction. I think mirrorless is the way to go long term now that the technologies needed for it are rapidly maturing.

dr-romix: one more thought to share in addition to the many other good ones already posted. All of your shots are portraits so maybe the best determinant of sharpness for you is with some good medium length prime lenses. I'm almost certain those lenses will give better ultimate results if you want to really make close judgments between the cameras.

Not sure those were really "pro photographers" who would have been using a Nikon D3xxx. Almost all wedding photogs I've seen use some version of a Canon 5D. Occasionally you'll see something like a Nikon D800/810.

It would be helpful if Ricoh came out and told people that electronic aperture control is the direction they are moving toward... or not. Frankly, I'm surprised they picked the 55-300 lens to start with. A true kit lens would seem to make more sense as they're only married to new bodies anyway. Hence, the issue of backward compatibility is essentially avoided.

I'm finding these wonderful K-1 images to be the least "digital" images I've seen from a DSLR. Granted, I don't look at Nikon D800/810 galleries or even 645Z images, either. They have a rare combination of sharpness and depth and the smoothness of color (which really enhances the depth) is something you just don't see with other cameras. It's almost as if the camera turns most lenses into an FA 77 shooting K25 film. Also, the inherent resolution of the sensor trumps any need for extra sharpening which keeps the images from becoming two-dimensional.

There's no reason to think Pentax/Ricoh are about to become a "video-centric" camera maker so I can't see why they'd be developing a separate lens lineup for video enhanced cameras. Given that, would there be any reason to spend a lot of time and money on an entirely new aperture control system if they didn't plan to broadly use it in future lens design?

Lens compatibility of the D3000 and the K-3 shouldn't be compared. If you want to bring the D7xxx-series into the question, that would be relevant.

I'm not an electronics engineer so will admit up front that I'm out of my league with these things. What I think I know is there's only one "pin" and that's the body to lens data pin. Signals must be multiplexed from the processor but that's still a single output point. If there's a reason why a K-3 II can properly multiplex the focusing with aperture signal but a K-3 can't, despite us thinking it's the same processor, it's not an obvious reason.

If it's a hardware limitation in the K-3 then it must be quite arcane. Considering the K-3 II can send the necessary digital signal to the lens to control its aperture (once the firmware is updated), one would reasonably think the K-3 could do the same since they use the same processor and have the same contacts. Besides the processor and the contacts, what other piece of hardware is there in the digital signal generation?

I'd take that bet. A very tiny camera with swappable lenses is no longer a very tiny "camera".
