Specific lenses with K1 for trip to New Zealand

Finally received the replacement copy of the Samyang 14 2.8 and did a quick test indoors. Apparently the infinity focus is off and the focusing at 3 Meter marking is sharper than infinity with subject at 5 meter in distance. Can't rely on the focusing scale which is a bummmer. Looks like I have to test the lens on the trip since I don't have time for another replacement . Also there is KR marking on the lens and I don't recall seeing it in previous version that I initially had.

I completely agree about the zoom and primes and I also prefer only primes. But in this case, I bought the 28-105 a week ago just for the versatility and weather resistance. Am also not sure if I will get my samyang 14mm 2.8 on time and hence bought this zoom only a week ago.

Thanks everyone for the valuable tips.

Based on everyone's suggestion, 28-105 will be default lens on K1.

I do have Sony RX100 Mark 1 and may use it with selfie stick. I will be staying 4 nights in North Island and 5 nights in South Island. The only reason am taking tripod is to take pictures with family with landscape using remote shutter and it would be no use on the cruise tour though. I do have 50 F1.4 manual lens but am comfortable with the ones with auto focus especially when taking pictures of my kid.

Am hoping to get a good copy of Samyang 14 f2.8 lens prior to my departure or else will have to rely on 35mm or 77mm as my secondary lens.

I have 4 x 64GB SD cards (2 x Sandisk Extreme pro, 1 x Sandisk Extreme & 1 x Lexar Pro 600x) and am bit confused if to use it in mirror or in sequential. Am planning to take an external hard disk and laptop so that I can copy the pictures on daily basis but again it depends on the time i have left for the day.

I do have an external flash (Metz 58 AF2) but am excluding it on the list since I dont think I would require flash. Can be argued for fill flash but it adds weight and I have to carry spare batteries as well.

AEE s71 action cam is good for videos since I can turn it on and leave it on my head or on chest level so that the camera records what I see. Am also planning to rotate it with my wife so that I will be covered in the video as well :)

Howdy,

Am planning for a trip to New Zealand with my family and need suggestionon the kit to take based on the location. The below is my kit.

Camera: Pentax K1
Lenses: Pentax 28-105WR, Pentax 77mm Ltd, Pentax 100mm 2.8Macro, Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART & Samyang 14mm 2.8 UWA (Waiting for replacement lenssince the first one had decentring issue.).
Tripod: Mefoto Road Trip aluminium
Video: Shotbox AEE S71 Action Cam (with head and cheststrap)

I will have to limit mylens kit to New Zealand since I have to manage my 2-year-old kid and there isweight restriction on few of the tours since we already have a stroller and Nappybag to accompany with us. I also do not want to spend too much time changingthe lenses during the trips.
The below are thelenses am planning to take for the below specific tour.

Hobbiton : Pentax 28-105WR

Milfred Sound cruise: Pentax 28-105WR & Samyang 14mm (If it arrives before the trip to NewZealand)
Glenorchy: Pentax 28-105WR& Samyang 14mm (If it arrives before the trip to New Zealand)
Tamaki Maori Village: Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art (Since this isevening tour). Its heavy lens but good for low light.

Am not sure if Pentax 100mm WR 2.8 and Pentax 77mm Ltd will be of much benefit compared to other lenses

Most of the family pictures will have to be taken with tripod andremote shutter and hence I would like to have some tips on that front.

Thanks,
Matt

Ultra wide angle Irix 15mm or Irix 11mm

Finally returned my lens to the distributor to swap with another copy. Currently they don't have stock and hopefully should be getting it by end of this month before my travel. I asked the distributor to test before shipping it out due to time constraints. Unfortunately with Pentax, the distributor cant guarantee a working copy since they don't have any Pentax camera for testing. They can only confirm for Canon or Nikon. :( Keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I tried to keep the camera parallel to the subject while taking the picture of the wall. Regarding the infinity, I kept the focus ring at the maximum and still find that far subjects are not sharp. I primarily bought this lens for the trip and will be using it primarily for sceneries with people.

Also focus peaking is challenging with wide angle especially and am still not getting used to it.

I completely agree that the sharpness wise it cannot match to any of my primes. Also getting focus lock on the ultra wide lens is very challenging. I would probably have it at infinity at all times and keep my subjects over a meter so that everything is focused.

Thanks mtgmansf.

Took the lens out for a quick spin and apologies for the composition since I really hate it. Using ultra wide lens is a whole different league which I need to start to master. All the pics were taken hand held since I have to head back to work fast. Am not sure if this lens has decentering issue since this is the first time am using UWA lens. But I can see on few pictures that the right edges were really soft compared to the left.
Would require some feedback/assistance on these images to see if there is any issue with the lens.

Thanks pinholecam. Those are very nice pictures.

Any issues in particular that I need to look for in these Samyang lenses. I think I have one week to swap them in case of any issues.

Thanks mtgmansf. I wanted to buy the Irix firefly but karma played with me and ended up buying Pentax 77 Ltd which I dont regret btw. Since my budget is now reduced, I have to go with Samyang since I need an UWA for the trip. I will definitely have to test this lens

Finally pulled the plug and ordered Samyang 14 2.8 for my Pentax K1. Got 25% discount with 2 years warranty. Could not resist it since its half the price of Irix 15mm Firefly. I should be getting it tomorrow hopefully and yet to take it out for a spin. Need to play with it and get comfortable before taking it to the trip.

Is Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX DG OK on K-1

I don't have both but was on similar confusion to chose between sigma 85 or Pentax 77 limited and ended up going with 77 limited due to its size and the pixie dust/ out of focus rendering everyone calls it. Have not been disappointed so far. In terms of Sigma, I had bad experience with 35 1.4 art and hence am staying away from sigma.

70-200 is a great lens to what i have heard and its in my bucket list. For me , its in a different category to 77 or 85mm focal length.

Nice pics and thanks for sharing. I completely agree that ultra wide can be very beneficial in tight spaces and landscapes. But at the same time I need to know how to use it and get the right composition. Else I will be cropping all the pics which defeats the purpose of having an ultra wide lens.

Do you have any pictures with the groups that you can share ? If am going with 15mm , the best bet is to keep people in the middle but I don't want to look tiny as well. On my trip , it would be just my family and the picture taken with remote shutter with camera mounted on tripod :)

@GodsPetMonkey, thanks for the input. I was seriously thinking about that lens but now I have 35mm, 50mm, 77mm and 100mm primes and hence not sure if it will be very beneficial. I agree it will be good as a travel lens but post my NZ trip, I don't want that lens to sleep in my bag. :(

@adewhite, some nice shots to understand the perspective of 15mm with people. I will be mostly taking pictures with my family in it and not just the landscape alone. So not sure if 15mm is going to be too wide or search something with 20mm.

I just received my Pentax K1 and Sigma 35mm lens after sending it for calibration three times. I do not want to upgrade to MK2 and then start the process all over again if it requires another calibration :( Am happy with my K1 and I still have lot more to explore on this camera.

I would also be interested to know the comparison post 1.5 firmware upgrade. I did experience the autofocus to be more precise post upgrade with my 77 limited lens in low light condition. Am not sure if precise is the right term to use or faster autofocus to lock on target.

Thanks Steve and everyone for the support. Its lot of valuable information that I have learned about using the manual lenses.

The seller was understandable and was happy to provide the refund and hence am sending this lens back to him.

Now am back to square one in finding a wide angle lens :(

Tried the DoF preview metering as well earlier but no luck. I tested the SMC 50 1.4 and I do not have this issue with that lens. The exposure was spot on.

I don't think its camera related since the issue is only with this lens . Also when tested indoor , the exposure is good across all apertures. Hence not sure what is different with outdoor in bright light situation

Came across the below thread and looks like Stone G has similar issue with different lens

If I can remember, the 50mm seems to be fine outdoors in the same scenario and the issue is only with 24mm. How ever I will double check on the 50mm again next weekend.

Correct , when I press the green button the aperture closes and reopens. It works fine indoors and the green button produces correct exposure. Not sure what is different outdoor when it's too bright. Even I was expecting the building on left to be dark which was not the case:(

---------- Post added 07-15-18 at 04:26 AM ----------

Regarding the EV compensation , I have double checked it. Not sure what the problem is.
