Pentax 150-450mm. Stiff zoomring?

When using a 150-450 mm telephoto zoom, which has already been used frequently, I noticed that the zoom ring is quite stiff. In particular between 150-200 mm and between about 370-450 mm. I borrowed this lens, so I don't know whether the zoom ring is so stubborn on a new one. Is this normal?

That's just a rhetorical answer. If it only contained a bit of sense, please explain why the other manufacturers are not returning to the fixed display on their system cameras.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

I bought my first Pentax in 1980. It was a Pentax ME. With the Pentax *ist DS came my first DSLR (in 2004 ?). I bought it because I had some Pentax lenses and also never completely stopped using film until today.
After *ist DS came the K10D as very good upgrade. I had the K20D (minor image quality), K7 (same minor image qualitiy) followed by the K-5. My first K-5 body had to be replaced because there were stains on the sensor. The image quality had improved drastically in comparison to it's two predecessors. Later I bought a Pentax K-3, which I liked. I started to miss a swiveling display with the Pentax K-3 II, which otherwise I like and still use. In addition I bought a Pentax K-70 which has a swiveling display and a slightly better image quality.

I always expected to get good cameras and lenses. But there have been some disappointments. For example my Pentax DA 4 / 300mm does not have a focus limiter and I had to deactivate the SDM because it is simply not reliable and takes too long to react.

For the 6 yeras I took photos with many cameras from other brands because, as a journalist, I write articles for German photo magazines
and therefore get a lot of new devices from Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon for tests and some projects.

Therefore I know the advantages and disadvantages of different camera systems very well. It became increasingly clear that others were pulling away in terms of autofocus and optics.

I hoped Ricoh could catch up with a powerful, well-equipped camera. A camera without a swiveling display does not meet current requirements.

I won't go into your comments on the subject of mirrorless because I think they're nonsense throughout.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

I don't know. Maybe I'll keep my Pentax equipment, but will not invest in that system anymore. Instead I buy a body from Sony or Nikon and gradually acquire the optics for it.

I have already taken photos with various Sony Alpha 7s and found their performance very good. This also applies to the lenses.
If you know and use the advantages of a swiveling display, for example with the Pentax K-70, Ricoh's stubbornness for me is beyond comprehension.

---------- Post added 09-16-2020 at 12:00 PM ----------

Why should I be satisfied with such a solution? If Ricoh doesn't provide a swiveling viewfinder with a modern high-end camera, there are better models from other brands that save you fumbling with a smartphone.

I don't owe Ricoh anything, and if the Pentax brand still does not bring out a mirrorless camera and in addition to that does without a swiveling display on a new high-end camera, the company has not understood the current market and will lose customers. Too bad.

Product Stories of New APS-C Vol.3?Wakashiro? | PENTAX official

Quote: " ... ... " That’s why PENTAX decided to equip this new camera with a fixed-type 3.2-inch monitor. ..."

Incredible. This means that the camera is not easy to use near the ground or on the copy stand. How could Ricoh make such a stupid decision?

I calibrate without large lenses because thus it's easier to turn and pan the camera with the required movements. I don't think that a lens has to be attached to calibrate.

I have the DA*300. It's SDM sucks. When it works, it is fast, but it needs time to start. I use another firmware, to use the older autofocus because it reacts quicker and it makes me angry, when SDM needs to be encouraged with prayers to work. That lens also doesn't have a focus limiter, which is incomprehensible. The optics are very good, however.

Eleven years ago I bought the smc Pentax-DA 55-300mm ED zoom lens. This week I got the successor with PLM autofocus. Of course, I was interested in whether that was a superfluous investment or whether more could be expected from the new lens.

Apart from the quiet and relatively fast autofocus, the optical quality has increased considerably. I wrote a report about it on my website photoinfos.com. It is in German, but you can see the images and see, which lenses where used for that comparison. Otherwise google translate helps to understand the text.

It seems to be very similar to the Pentax K3(-II) when you lighten the shadows of the image which shows the camera on that webpage.

Yes, after 40 years with Pentax that may happen. I still use my 35mm Pentax cameras sometimes and will keep them, but if the next Pentax flagship for APS-C can not keep up with the competition, I can no longer justify in my professional environment that I stick to a digital system that mainly offers an improved optical viewfinder and at the same time doesn't have some helpful features that are standard in other cameras. Let's wait and see. So far we don't know what the new Pentax can do.

I can't give numbers and surely you didn't expect any. But I often read in second-hand-offers that people sell their entire Pentax equipment because of a system change.

I have been taking photos with Pentax SLR cameras since 1980 and now use the K 70 and K3-II. I am also a journalist and mainly write articles for German-language photo magazines. Among all my colleagues, there is no one else who works with the Pentax system. And I present Pentax cameras in my articles. Some examples:

Pentax-Kameras | c't Digitale Fotografie | Heise Magazine

Teleskop statt Teleobjektiv | heise online

NIEDRIGESSTATIV mit hoher Tragkraft | c't Digitale Fotografie | Heise Magazine

and on my website photoinfos.com

Teleskop als Teleobjektiv

Berlebach Report 342 Holzstativ test review

You can download some english magazines with my articles in which I show Pentax cameras. Copy and paste the shortened links into your browser.

Pages 106 - 117

shorturl.at/aoruC

Pages 78 - 95

You can see, I still prefer the Pentax brand professionally and know it well, and have promoted it very often in long articles.

My K3-II is a great camera, but it‘s lame auto focus system and non tiltable display are no longer acceptable in my view. In addition, a high-quality camera from 2020 must have a touchscreen that makes it possible to tap the point to be focused.

Through my job, I often have new cameras from Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon available for various articles or tasks. A Pentax K3-II with the DA 4/300 mm (f.. sdm) telephoto lens without focus limiter is simply not up to the competition in practice. I just experienced this again today when taking pictures of flying birds of prey. The hit rate was miserable and too often the lens focused in the close range, so that I could not use the short moment to take pictures of the flying bird.

A tilting display is very important for macro shots near the ground or for photographing films with a camera on a repro column or for photos with a telescope. A camera that does not have that today can no longer keep up with the competition. The target group that wants to do without it is small.

No, but an external startracker also does the job.

I watched both films and actually learned nothing other than that Ricoh does not bring a mirrorless Pentax onto the market. The optical viewfinder is described like something new and magical. The interviewer is emotionally exaggerating, but maybe it's just a Japanese way of responding that seems strange to me. Silver painted tubes of lenses? Either it is real metal or please leave it black.

Let's not kid ourselves, Pentax has lost many photographers to Sony and it‘s cameras are impressive. The same applies to Sony’s lenses. Pentax 4 / 300mm telephoto lens without limiter and with the terrible SDM drive should have long ago been replaced by an improved version that also has a pull-out sunshade. In my view, the current 300 mm telephoto lens is a misconstruction. I only use it because I lack an alternative.

If Pentax wants to keep up, then a new APS-C flagship must have a tiltable touchscreen, offer focus stacking, have a much improved autofocus, needs hand held pixel shift with recognition of moving objects and also improved image quality. 4 K Video with at least 60 f/s? Yes! The hint that results are better at low ISO results is all well and good. But in nature and sports photography, in addition to long focal lengths, very short exposure times are required. This requires high ISO values.

A few days ago I photographed the comet Neowise with the Pentax K3-II. I used the Astrotracer to avoid star trails, which is a brillant function. I do not want to do without it in a new model. For this, the GPS module must be on board and not depending on an additional device. The foldable display is missing on the K3-II. Not having it on a successor would be a real stop signal for buyers.

The two videos are particularly striking due to the lack ofinformation. An enthusiasm is shown that cannot really be understood.

20s exposures with 560mm are good without a real telescope mount. I think that with such a long focal distance the camera must know exactly the real focal distance to track correctly. If the real focal length deviates too much from the specified one, errors occur earlier.

Does anyone have a link?

With 600mm focal length (telescope) and 30s exposure time I managed to take photos without star trails and on one I found the ring nebula.

Inverted image on display of a Pentax K100D

This doesn't effect the images. I wouldn't even mind if they were negative, because than I could use that body for quick and easy scans of images on bw oder coloured negatives.

I bought that body to disable the SDM of my DA* 300 mm. Now I keep it just in case that need ever occurs again. Therefore it is not a real issue, that everything is inverted on the display. But it would be nice, if there is a easy hack with the buttons. I will not takeit apart.

You don't need the scope-adapter (PF-CA35). Instead you can mount a DSLR with a lens (2,8/40mm) behind the eyepiece. Have a look at the first picture on this side: Digiscoping mit der DSLR - Mit dem Spektiv fotografieren. Digiskopie

Digiscoping PF-CA35 vs T adapter

The PF-CA35 comes from a time when there were no dslr. It is made for 24x36mm. Therefore with APS-C you will only get a small crop onto your sensor. Regarding the long focal distance and bad seeing (shimmering) many pictures won't be as good as expected.

On my german website, I have a tutorial for digiscoping. There is a page about the PF-CA35. Even though you might not understand what is written there, the pictures show a lot. Pentax Digiscoping Adapter PF-CA35 Digiskopie

Beneath this title 'Pentax Adapter am Zeiss Spektiv' you can see a comparison of pictures. The left was taken with a Pentax K-3 with the 2,8/40mm behind the eyepiece. The image on the right side was taken without the eyepiece and without the 40mm lens but with the PF-CA35 on 35mm film. I used an old PEntax K2 because I didn't have a FF DSLR for the test. Clearly you can see that the PF-CA35 is made for 24x36mm.

As you can see on that webside, I have combined the PF-CA35 with the lens of a microscope. There are many different of those. With some of them combined with the PF-CA35, it is possbile to make good pictures.
