fujifilm gf 23mm 645

The reason why the Pentax system is not expanding is because Ricoh has $0 to spend on the 645 system. This is because they built the system on its lure of cheap existing lenses which has meant that they haven’t attracted any users to the brand with money to spend on new lenses, so the cycle began. Add this to the fact that they think users are happy with the lens offering because they are not speaking up,

You don’t make money on camera bodies at this level, it’s made on lenses. They aren’t selling any.

I can’t believe that you think the 28-45 constitutes an ultra wide, that I should have to carry an entire other camera for ultra wide, or that you think that Rico’s business analysts are thinking that the system doesn’t need an ultra wide lens when it’s main target market is landscape.

---------- Post added 11-21-17 at 04:45 AM ----------

This thread is exactly a point, the OP has the $$$ to buy a lens for his shiny 645z, but they don’t have it. Also don’t give me that excuse of “users want a 900mm too” because it doesn’t fly.

Fact remains that if Pentax dropped a highly corrected, lighter 23mm f/5.6 lens that takes filters onto the market tomorrow, a substantial portion of Pentax 645 digital users would find the money to purchase it right away without hesitation. I repeat, they will find the money, just in the same way every new Fujifilm GFX buyer has magically found the money to buy into the GFX system.

Keep telling yourself that.

But what about the 645 users that don’t want to step back in time and use film? What about their users that invested in the 645 digital system and really need a UWA lens, but don’t want to carry a K1 just for that task.

Maybe it’s the Pentax apologists that are actually the ones holding the brand back.......

Considering that you are looking to do Astro work, I would say get the K1. Form and function it is much more current than even the 645Z, with its full electronic and electronic first curtain shutter options, wide array of wide aperture wide angle lenses, beautiful tilt screen etc etc.

Add to that the 645z does not have a wide angle lens suitable for astro work, or an ultra-wide lens at all for that matter.

When you consider that you don't have the funds for a Z, get the K1. As a matter of fact, if I were not already invested into the 645Z and lenses, I would not recommend to anybody (even myself) to buy into Pentax 645 digital at this point until they at least show us what the future holds. The big players Hasselblad and Fuji are leaving old Pentax in the dust at the moment and I doubt that the Pentax 645 system will ever recover from this current onslaught of new products. A few die-hards on here are not going to like me saying that, but its a hard truth. I am staying put with my system for now and hoping like hell that Pentax release a newer body with OVF / EVF option and EFCS and K1 tilt screen, plus some new high class zoom lenses for landscape and travel work, which is my primary application.

Yes, Pentax has really dropped the ball. When you are a hobbyist like myself and wish to plan for future purchases, it sucks when you have absolutely no idea when and what is coming. Or, for that matter, if the system even has a future at all.

Do they realize how obvious it is that they are on the take?

After this I’ll be sure to never ever buy any of their products. What a joke.

Yes you can say that all day long, but that way of thinking does not grow a brand and gain market share, nor does it entice new users with money into the system.

Look at it this way, Fuji released an expensive medium format system with a body the same price as the 645Z. Look at how many wealthy amateurs and pros have jumped in and found the money that they otherwise did not have to spend on any system that came before it.

You bring a compelling offering to the market and the market will dive in head first.

PS. I agree with what you are saying, but as a way forward it won't make Pentax any money.

Thats true, but they are asking big dollars for effectively 20-30 year old designs.

Lets face it, for Pentax to make money they need to sell bodies and lenses. BUT..........anybody looking into affordable crop medium format will look at Fuji's offering and say "well the lenses are new and designed for digital" and are much less in price than the Pentax offerings. People with money want new updated designs, not old lenses made new. Its just how it is. Us here on the forum represent such a small sector of the potential market.

I think if Pentax wishes for future success they would want to release more new and updated lenses like the DFA35, lightweight, well performing and cheap.

They could easily re-release the FA120, FA45-85 and the FA80-160 in DFA or DA form.

Consumers want “new lenses” not old ones, it’s in the mind.

I think that Pentax are in a unique position to be able to service the market from both angles, in that they could produce a 645Z II with a new 100mp sensor and optical viewfinder, plus also release concurrently a 645Z II M which has the mirror box and OVF removed and has a massive EVF and full time live view.

Imagine that!

I actually returned the camera after getting back from the holiday, my dealer was gracious enough to give me a store credit as I know them very well. I tested it with another 15-30 and did not find it to be really any different. I love the K1, its an excellent camera and an extension of the wonderful 645z.

As my second kit I now have a 5DmkIV and a selection of Canon lenses and I love it. The overall image quality from the camera is very comparable to the K1 for the applications that I now use it for, which is travel, handheld live view with tracking, long lens work and some landscape, along with quite a bit of astro. I was recently in Cambodia and one night I was in a Tuk Tuk and some locals came alongisde on their motorbike, I held the 5D out the side in live view with a 35mm f/2 IS lens attached and it tracked perfectly. I got some great shots and the K1 would have possibly struggled a lot with that. The AF system (both through the viewfinder and in live view) on the 5DmkIV is another level above the K1. I also much prefer a through-the-lens IS system that you can see working, its much better for framing etc and nets the same result in internal camera IS.

I am still using my 645z for landscape exclusively.

If I did not have the 645 system, I may have a different kit which would possibly include the K1.

You buy a system for what you need it for, so when its great for somebody else if may not be the case for you, but thats fine too.

"Upgrading" decision, Pentax 645Z or Nikon D850(810)

I have seen high ISO samples and the 850 seems a solid stop better than the 810, so that would put it on par with the 645z.

But this new gen BSI sensor would have increased dynamic range as well.

However, like you Mike I would have to ask why the OP wouldn't just upgrade to the Z.

Only reason is if he wants a more versatile system and lighter weight.

It's a tough call, if I still had the 645D I would consider the same as Pentax aren't paying much attention to the 645 system.

But then what about the replacement (if ever) to the 645Z? It will leap them all again like the Z did the first time.

All good points.

Some are right in saying that the Z does not need a lot of work, but a revision or Mid-term release would certainly help.

There is nothing wrong with the body size in my view, I don't mind it and its very comfortable to use. Due to the lack of the "right" lenses, I find myself not wanting to carry it around on holiday, thus making me think about the fuji.

How about:
- Make a 45mm f/2.8 OS lens that can be used for general use, Sharp, light and portable.
- Make a new 45-90mm f/4.5 OS lens. That's the perfect one lens solution for a Z and would satisfy 80% of my landscape photo needs.
- Release the current Z but with an electronic first curtain shutter, faster processor, add-on EVF, pixel shift and the gorgeous K1 multi-angle LCD.

Hi all.

So.....where do we all think Pentax is at right now with their 645 system??

- Is it dead now with resources being poured into FF?
- Is there something new on the horizon? Early next year marks 4 years for the Z.
- Where are the new lenses on the roadmap?
- Where does an SLR type body sit in the market for affordable MF now that the Fuji GFX is out, it's quite a good camera (not perfect but a compelling offering).
- are we going to see a replacement for the DFA25mm?

I'd like some sort of direction from Pentax to be honest. I've got too much invested for a dying system.

Anybody else have any thoughts?

Sure, you can say that. But we are talking about new lenses being released here, not bodies.

You could say they are busy working on FF, but even 2 of the 3 lenses released for the K1 were manufactured by Tamron.

So where is the new products........

I see your point but it doesn't help the rest of us that would love to complete our kits with first class optics.

I wish they would give us a timeline of sorts. Fujis 23mm and 110mm are top shelf glass and they are stealing Pentax customers which makes it even harder for Pentax to find the funds to build new lenses.

Everybody praises the second hand market, but it does nothing for Pentax's bottom line.

I have the 645Z and have had the K1 and I find that the file quality from the Z can't be compared to the K1. The detail level and quality of the files from the Z are another level above the K1. Its worth carrying the 645Z for the output quality.

I would love to have a play with a 100MP sensor from Phase One, it would be unreal.

Adapt 645 lenses?

You can adapt the FA and A lenses with the genuine adapter to the K1, but They are hard to find.

You get no AF, nor will you ever get AF because it's screw driven on the older lenses.

I have a genuine adapter for sale if you are looking. PM me.
