Sharpest Pentax Lens; Samyang 135mm f2 lens

Sharpest I have are:

Vivitar 55mm 2.8 Macro (manual K-mount)

Pentax FA 100mm 2.8 Macro

The FA 50mm 1.4 is really sharp as well.

I really think that a lot of the "sharpness" has to do with nailing focus. In my experience, AF is usually not spot on so you don't really get images that are sharp as they could be.

I actually have very few lenses that I would not consider able to get sharp images from.

Camera sensor and lens cleaning kit. Had a big fuzzy get stuck on my K-30 sensor. The air blower took care of it.

Quantaray 2X AF Teleconverter - K-30 is very picky with it and my 18-135 and 10-17, but it works fine with my FA 50 1.4. Haven't tried any other lenses with it on the K-30, but it works great on my K-01 with the ones I had trouble with on the K-30. Live view (contrast focus) works better than regular focus on my K-30, but still not near as good as it does with the K-01.

Kooka KK-P25 AF Extension Tube. Have only tried it with the 18-135, but it works excellent except for the fact that the max focus distance even at 135mm is crazy close - about 2.5'. Max focus distance at about 37mm is almost touching the front element. I am definitely going to do some more experimenting with the 18-135. I was not able to even get it to focus at 18. Very strange as I haven't really tried extension tubes with zoom lenses before.

The DOF with the 18-135 is super thin as well.

HEHEHEHE.Did a little bit of extra testing with the 2x and the extension tube.

It works best with the 2x teleconverter on the camera, then the extension tube, and then the lens. With it at 135mm, the minimum focus distance is right at the front of the lens. It will autofocus with an object at about 1" from the front of the lens.

Yeah.. not surprising about the image quality on the Opteka lenses.

However.. I do have one of those Vivitar 2x macro teleconverters and it seems to work pretty well with my converted Olympus 55mm 1.2 lens. I haven't really tried it on other lenses yet.

You used to be able to order parts directly from the Pentax parts department. I am pretty sure that went away after Ricoh took over. It was when they were still using KRIS for repairs. Maybe I ordered the mount directly from KRIS. It has been a few years and I can't find the email communication.

From my experience, Pentax lenses are pretty resilient to impact damage. That's how I got my 10-17 and my DAL 55-300.

The 10-17 I had to disassemble to fix the hood because it was bent and causing the focus to be too tight to even go all the way to the one end. It has not given me a single problem since I fixed it.

The DAL 55-300 had a broken mount and the filter ring is cracked. I ordered a replacement mount from Pentax. Has not given me one problem with zoom or focus. Even after fixing it, the total cost was about $57.

But yeah, I would be very suspicious of "impact damage" if nothing on the outside of the lens shows any damage whatsoever. Sounds like normal fatigue of inferior parts to me.

What to look out for when buying a used lens?

I've gotten a good number of my lenses at "too good to be true" prices off of Ebay.

FA 50 1.4 - $50 - posting said there was so much fungus the lens was not usable. I didn't see that in the pictures so I bought it. When I got it, I found it had a very small amount of fungus that was very easily removed.

DAL 55-300 - $50 - camera it was mounted on had been dropped and the mount was broken and the filter screw mount was cracked. $7 + shipping for a new mount from Pentax and it works just fine and is really sharp for a bigger zoom.

Olympus Zuiko 55mm 1.2 - $35 + shipping - absolutely nothing wrong with it except it was missing the rubber grip - converted to K mount

Vivitar 55mm 2.8 macro + camera - ~35 + shipping - poor description and picture but I did research and decided it had to be what I though it was.

Panagor PMC 90mm 2.8 macro - same exact story as above and about the same price.

Konica camera with multiple lenses including Sigmatel/Sigma XQ 135mm 1.8 and 300mm f4 for $180

So just because the price is "too good to be true" doesn't mean it is.

Just do your research and testing and then come to your own conclusion.

The 18-135 arrived today. I immediately put it on my K30 and took a few test shots.

It does seem to focus a bit faster than the 18-55 indoors and is really quiet. I have never used an SDM or DC lens so it was a nice surprise.

The regular screw drive lens noise doesn't bother me at all as I like to be able to hear the lens focusing. I will have to get used to it being this quiet.

I tested out the close focus distance at 18mm and even though the 18-135 is supposed to not be able to focus quite as close, even a small 4-year old's face is large enough fill the entire frame at 18mm.

Planning on going hiking in a couple weeks and I will see if I can use just that lens the whole time. I'm guessing I will at least switch to the 10-17 for a few shots, but who knows.

First one is T2, which a K adapter is like $10. It is the same size as M42, but different thread pitch.

The Third one is YS, which is a fancy T2 mount that was available for a short while. It would let different systems use a specific YS adapter to be able to do aperture control. You can use a regular T2 adapter on it.

There are some other not so expensive and seemingly in better condition 135mm f1.8 lenses on Ebay right now.

Weltblick 135mm F 1 8 M42 Gorgeous Ultra Fast bokeh Monster Manual Lens Test Pic | eBay

Spiratone 135mm F1 8 Telephoto YS Manual Focus Lens for Minolta MD Beautiful | eBay

I have the old Sigma (Sigmatel), which is the same exact as the Sigma XQ line 135mm f1.8 lens.
It is huge and heavy and very well made. It produces some pretty nice pictures as well. It just doesn't get used hardly at all. doubt I will ever get rid of it.

Well, I have an 18-135 on the way. Somebody posted one on Ebay for a decent amount less than I had been seeing. Included the lens, hood, and 5 Tiffen filters for $210 shipped.

Thanks for the tips... I am leaning towards the 18-135. Just wish it was a bit faster at the wider end.

I already have a DAL 55-300 for the longer outdoor reach.

Maybe I should have listed the lenses I normally carry:
DA 10-17
DA WR 18-55
DAL 55-300
FA 50 1.4
converted Olympus 55 1.2
Vivitar 2x macro focusing tele extender (turns the 55 1.2 into a 110 2.4 ~1:1 macro)

Basically, the 18-55 is not long enough all the time indoors and walking around and the 55-300 is too long in those same situations because a lot of the shots are going to be 55mm or below.

I've got a good flash already, so maybe I should just go for the 18-135, especially since under low-ish light the 18-55 seems to focus pretty quick anyway.

What I would really like is something more like a 12-105 or 12-135 but that doesn't exist.

The 18-55 just seems kind of short on the long end and maybe a little too long on the wide end for a walk around / quick indoor shot lens.

Looking at 16mm vs 18mm, I don't think that the wide end is going to make much of a difference at all though.
I also already have a 10-17 so I have the really wide range covered.

So I've been looking at these lenses:
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 Is it really much better than the older 2.8-4.5?
Pentax 17-70 f4
Pentax 18-135

I also saw a Sigma 18-125, but it looks like it is not that sharp until stopped down.

I also like that the wide end on the Sigma 17-70 is faster than the Pentax lenses but not really sure if that is going to make a huge difference.

Most I am looking to spend is about $250.

Used is fine.

I also thought about maybe getting something like an 18-200/250 at some point as a general outdoor walk around lens - not expecting stellar performance here and probably wouldn't get used that much but I can see it coming in handy for hikes and such.

HAHA. I wish.

I am actually working on thinning out my lens collection.

A few I have I never use and a few are redundant that I also never use.

Just have too much of what I don't need and not enough of what I do need.

K30 random underexposure problem

I hardly ever used live view on my K30 before the shutterbox gave out. Why would that even have anything to do with it closing the aperture all the way every time a picture is taken anyway?

To me it sounds more like a bad solder connection, especially since some people say it is "fixed" by doing a burst of pictures... which would heat up the connection enough to expand the metal so it would have a good enough connection at least for a while.

That is, until it eventually creates too much carbon deposits on the bad connection and ceases to work altogether.

If it ever happens on my K30 again, since it will most likely be out of extended warranty by then, I will go ahead and open it up and do some research to find out exactly the problem is.

Anybody have a broken K30 they want to send me and I will see if I can fix it? (no promises and also no guarantee that I won't make it worse).

Dreams about camera gear?

Sooo... Am I just completely strange or do other people have dreams about getting/finding camera gear?

The latest one happened last night.

I was somewhere and found some lenses in a few different places.. like people had just abandoned them or lost them.

Each time I came across some they were always under some type of plant, like a bush or shrub or similar.

The ones that I remember were a 1.8x extender that mounted to a body with a K mount, but used M42 lenses - very strange and not sure why I would even want such a thing.

The other was some crazy compact zoom with a constant f1.6 and a range of something like 20-270mm. Closed up it wasn't any longer than a FA 50mm 1.4 but was a decent amount bigger around.

There were a lot of others, and each time I picked one up, I was hoping it was a 50-ish 1.2 with AF.

All of them were the design of the old FA lenses but were a dark-ish grey color.

And I remember thinking that I wished that I would be able to still have them when I woke up but knew that it wouldn't happen.

Make sure to check the AF focus on all your AF lenses and make any necessary fine tune adjustments on the camera if your camera supports it.

Your out of focus shots may not be your fault, but the fault of the camera not being adjusted for the lens.

I wouldn't have even thought of this except that I was doing some shots with my FA 50mm 1.4 @ 1.4 on my K30 that just came back from being serviced and noticed that the AF was not right. After fiddling with the focus fine tune settings for a few minutes, it is spot on now.

Right handed, right eyed.

I never even tried using my left eye through the viewfinder. Then again, my astigmatism is so bad in my left eye that it would be super blurry anyway.

Even my right eye is not perfectly clear unless I am wearing my contacts when using the viewfinder.. even with the diopter adjusted all the way.

The further away you are form the subject will give you more depth of field at the same aperture. It should also have a small positive effect on how fast the shutter speed would need to be in order to freeze motion.

Sigma makes a 24mm 1.8 lens in Pentax mount. It is not very cheap though.

You can also get decently fast 28mm lenses for not that much.

Do you have an add-on flash or are you just using the built in flash?

An add-on flash and using it as a bounce flash will give you much better lighting / less harsh shadows.
