Maybe look at Vuescan software for scanning - it copes with many many scanners that have out-of-date drivers. Much less expensive than new hardware!

After 2 phone messages about a delivery that I thought were phishes, one knock at the door and one new lens has landed in time for my lockdown walk! No notification from CR Kenndy, so wasn't expecting it. Pity that the reason I bought early is a trip that has now been cancelled. Still, the lens won't go to waste

This amateur is - overwhelmed by the number of buttons  and feeling guilty about only using a couple :o
Nearly thought about selling: in the context of my photography, this camera is way way beyond most of my needs and capabilities - but - the high ISO performance and auto-focus are so brilliant that it'll stay  (I didn't feel that way about the K1, it was love at first look through the viewfinder, so I didn't even notice the viewfinder improvement on the K3 - spoilt, that's me).

In the mad flurry on April 1 to get the best price, I inadvertently bought the premium kit, with grip, and thought I would sell the extras. Never felt the need for a grip - but - tried it, and it's also a keeper  . Even though my hands are small, the grip somehow balances the lenses and makes me take a more stable stance - similar to the (gripless) K1. It's a bit too conspicuous though, signalling "pro" (I'm not, I'm really really not). But for the sake of more keepers from shaky hands, I'll put up with it

As for the camera itself, apart from the mild irritation at having to learn my way around menus and buttons, the joy stick makes it so easy to move focus points, that I may end up retraining the centre-focus-move-and-shoot habit developed with my first ever DSLR a few decades ago. And learn to use AF-C. (They say you keep young by learning, at this rate I'm about to become a teenager with their first DSLR.)

The much-neglected but admired DA* 50-135 is now behaving like a lens should, focussing fast enough instead of being a snail :).

This may well be the last camera I buy (oh, wait, K1-iii with better auto-focus?) - time to put the old K3 on the market and let some-one else have a try.

And other than saying how blessed I feel that years of work and frugality have enabled me to indulge in this way, I'll stop babbling and get back to checking for lens adjustments :D

Got vaccinated today. Anyone??

Been meaning to do this for a while - many thanks for all you who have been posting about your vaccination experience.

Reading your posts has really helped alleviate my fear of the unknown about getting vaccinated. I had already intended to do so as soon as eligible, but knowing that I'm in the same boat as you all has made it a much less anxious experience.

So now I'll add my experience in the hopes that it will help some one else.

A few weeks ago, I had my first jab of Astro Zeneca at midday. That night, I experienced chills and shaking like never before, but no headache. It was not alarming because I'd been warned that it was one of the possible reactions. Next day, very tired and lethargic, but not surprising with the amount of energy used in shaking that night. After that, nothing.

My aged parent (of 96 years) was very weak the day after her first vaccination, alarmingly so, but she recovered the following day and there have been no other repercussions.

To those of you who are still hesitating, I say - please do it, you'll experience an unexpected amount of relief about an anxiety that you may not even be aware that you have. And you will be protecting your nearest and dearest and those of others.

Scanner Software Suggestions?

You've a couple of options, I think.

+1 for Vuescan - unlike Silverfast, the only other real contender for scanning software IMO, you only pay once, and it works for most scanners. That means, you'll get all updates without charge (getting to be a bit of a rarity). And it's cheaper than Silverfast.

My only caveat is Vuescan's dust removal, it's OK but better not to have to use it, and remove a few spots in Lightroom or Photoshop.

If you're wanting best quality end-results that will mean that you only have to scan once, Negative Lab Pro (NLP) is the best there is (again IMO and I've tried just about all of the scan processing software) - provided you use Lightroom.
The NLP plugin also adds extra metadata fields in Lightroom, so you can keep a record of information such as camera used, film type, f-stop, shutter speed, etc, etc all in the one place. Being Lightroom, it's all non-destructive processing so as you improve (it'll take a little time), it's easy to go back and redo.

Have you considered scanning via your DSLR instead, and then use the above post-processing software? There's a lot of information in this forum and many other websites on how to set up and do this. The advantage here is that you're only up for the NLP/LR processing software, and not the scanning software.

um - what camera does OP actually have?
If K1, I'm under the impression that the x1.4 converter is incompatible.

Also, where is OP intending to photograph wildlife - that is, how portable does the equipment have to be?

traveling regrets with photography?

(

My photos are an absolute necessity for my memory - I recreate the entire situation, sight, sound, movement, etc when looking at them. Without them, I've forgotten almost everything. I do still try for composition, etc)

My only regrets are not having better technique and more high-ISO capability for the places I've been to that I'll never see again (outback Australia after rare rain when the plants have responded with brilliant flowers and the wind rarely stops blowing)

I need to move on from Adobe LR 6, but need advice

^^^^

Agreed - monthly payment for the Lightroom/Photoshop is pretty painless.

Here's why I'm staying:
- can't live without Texture/Clarity/Dehaze - they are doing marvels to old photos, including scans.
- Negative Lab Pro plugin is essential for film scans.
- need the image management functions in the one package.
- I now have such ingrained muscle memory for moving Development sliders, etc that I'm really reluctant to even try anything else. (I can look through my camera viewfinder and know what post-processing will be needed - heck, I don't even need a camera, just looking at the scene is enough!)

And I'm confident that Adobe will eventually improve image management and catch up with Topaz/DXO sharpening and noise reduction, there's not much else to improve

DA*16-50 to compare with K3 pics taken of flowers on a dark windy day, then DA*50-125 to see if there's any difference in focussing speed - but later than you lucky silver purchasers (mine's black with no ETA, boo)
And then play around with the different focus points and AF-C

K-1 II PEF Incompatible with macOS Catalina

To quote the answer to my question from the Lightroom Queen's Forum:

Question: what is the difference between DNG and a camera manufacturer's proprietary format (in this case, PEF)?

Answer: DNG is a public universal format. The information fields in the DNG file header block are described and documented by Adobe (the developer of the file format) and made public for anyone to use. The data block for a RAW file contains values recorded at the Photosites on the sensor. RAW photo sites are not converted to RGB pixels. The PEF file format is like the DNG RAW file format in that it has a Header block and a RAW data block. So either file format contains the same photo site values in the data block. The difference between the two file formats is the information fields in the header block are not described and documented by Pentax and can only be read and interpreted by PENTAX image processing software. Eventually Adobe and other image processing software developers will reverse engineer the proprietary PEF file format and be able to process the PEF RAW file data.

So the actual picture data is no different, just the interpretation as instructed from the different Header block.

If you are a Lightroom/Photoshop user (and don't already know this), Lightroom Queen Forums is a fantastic resource.

There's a discussion about this in Digital Processing, Software, and PrintingWhat to expect from K3 iii and various processing programs?

To repeat what's said there - if you shoot RAW in DNG format, Lightroom and ACR will recognize and load. If you shoot in PEF the format won't be recognised until Adobe has updated the software.
(can't speak for any other RAW processing software)

Have checked with the experts at the Lightroom Queen's forum - to quote -

If you shoot in DNG, then Lightroom will be able to import and edit these raw files right from the start. If you shoot in PEF, you will have to wait for an update before Lightroom can even import them.

(I've asked for the reason, 'cos I'm curious)

Can't speak for other RAW processors.

I may be mistaken, but TIFFS are not created by the camera's software, only JPGS (demosaiced, processed and compressed) and RAW in either DNG or PEF format (almost totally unprocessed and uncompressed - "almost" because of the high-ISO stuff that I don't feel a need to come to grips with )

Anyway, it's all highly theoretical until the kit arrives

I can't see why PEF format wouldn't be demosaiced either, that is, the conversion of 0/1 to viewable colour.

My experience is with Lightroom/ACR, and versions of these are continually being upgraded to "support" new camera models.

But I don't know what makes the difference between (say) K1 and K1vII. Hmm, maybe it's the camera profile/calibration that changes, and the lens corrections that depend on the camera that the lens is attached to? That is, after demosaicing, and therefore able to be updated manually.

(and I thought that I knew everything I needed to know about LR , this has me scratching my head)

Ouch! Forgot that RAW file conversion specific to the new model camera probably won't be available in various software for a while! No problem with JPEG, the camera does the conversion. I'll research a bit for PEF/DNG conversion.
