How about a raffle in which everyone who posts on a particular day gets one entry, regardless of the number of posts they make or number of likes they earn? That way you'd be encouraging people who don't post much to get more involved without encouraging people to spam every thread they can find.

What happens if you use the aperture ring on your K5? Surely that should work? (Not in the market myself - too many 300/2.8s already if you can believe it!)

Currently undecided whether to get a K5 or jump ship and get a C***n. Getting tired of waiting for full frame for stills and would like the flexibility of Magic Lantern for video. But then I have a lot of lovely Pentax glass...

Pocket jib looks nice, but it's not cheap!

Weathersealing works - K7 music video

Shot this on my K7 last summer with the DA*16-50, and was very glad of the weather sealing. Video isn't straight from camera; I've tweaked the contrast and saturation for effect (which may or may not be to everyone's taste).

I actually filmed a whole load of shots with the idea of cutting them together, but somehow this single take (which was a bit of an out-take really) grabbed me. And before anyone asks, yes I did forget to hit the AE-L button :(

Suggestion: Great Big Pentax Lens Survey
Posted By stevo
Replies: 118

Me too. Specifically, while there's an option for "I own an older Pentax equivalent" there isn't an option for "I own a better Pentax equivalent" (why would you want a DA16-45 if you have a DA*16-50?). And what if you already own a third-party equivalent but would still consider buying the pentax version as an upgrade?

Rather than having mutually exclusive responses, it would be better if you had tick boxes for "own this lens", "own 3rd party equiv" etc. It would make completeing the survey easier and provide more useful information.

A big improvement in terms of the outcome of the survey as a whole would be to split the "wishlist" option into "I would like to own this lens" and "I intend to buy this lens". There's a big difference between having something on your wishlist and actually being likely to buy one.

Also, the longest/fastest future lens is only 400mm f4/5.6??

I know we're not supposed to discuss prices, but seeing as someone's already complained they're too high, I thought I'd chip in to say that if anything they're too low! $375 for the pair with PKA mount is an absolute bargain.

Hi Adam,

great stuff. Just one comment: I would think about splititng "condition" into optical/mechanical or optical/cosmetic or something. A lens that's 70% on the outside but 90% on the inside is a very different proposition from one that's 90% on the outside and 70% on the inside, if you get my drift...

I don't think you'll regret the purchase. It's a great general-purpose lens. Knocks spot off the kit lens, and while it's not a true macro it does get you pretty close.

If you had chosen to list these as your first ebay items, you might not have got a very good price for them. People tend to be suspicious of ebay sellers with zero feedback offering rare and high-value items!

whats that spec of light?

It's lens flare caused by the bright light at the bottom of the picture. If you draw an imaginary line from your UFO through the centre of the frame, you'll see it goes right through the bright light on the other side.

Super tele on a budget

I am one of those several people. I'm a big fan of mirror lenses. They have their drawbacks as outlined above, but they're capable of excellent results (in the right hands) and for the price they can't be beaten. That said, I'd avoid the no-brand ones by Phoenix and so on. The Tamron SP 500mm is very good.

When buying used mirror lenses, it's always worth checking if the mirror coating is marked or damaged in any way. Over time the mirror surface can separate from the glass and then there's nothing you can do about it.

Another alternative if you're on a budget is to look at one of the older Pentax 300mm f4 lenses. The M42 and K versions can be had pretty cheaply, and will knock spots off any xx-300mm zoom.

If you're on a budget, then older flashes can be the way to go. Even with non-TTL flashes you can still use them in manual mode, but depending what sort of shots you're wanting to do that's not necessarily a great restriction. For studio-type portraits or product shots you'd probably use manual flash anyway, and it will certainly teach you a lot about lighting. I recently did some product shots using a DL, an AF160 and a no-brand flash. The sync cables and triggers cost me more than the flashguns!

There's lots of (non Pentax specific) advice about flash techniques at strobist. The one thing you do have to be careul of is that some older flashguns can have high trigger voltages which can damage digital cameras but most are perfectly safe.

Thanks Clem,

from the looks of it I think that's a 540 rather than a 360, just have to hope they use the same colour wires!

I'm looking for the same sort of thing for the same reason, and it strikes me that for not much more than pentax are asking for a piece of plastic you could get one of the ebay wireless flash triggers that double as a tripod/hotshoe adapter.

Help! Broken AF360FGZ
Posted By stevo

Hi all,

I've had a bit of an accident with my AF360FGZ which has ripped the hotshoe connector from the main body of the flash. The flash still works in wireless mode, but I'd like to be able connect it to the camera for high-speed sync and general convenience. There are five coloured wires (brown red orange green yellow) coming out of the flash body and five solder connections on the hotshoe bit (see picture below) so it shouldn't be too hard to fix. I was just hoping someone might be able to tell me which colour wire goes to which pin?

Thanks in advance,

Not happy with marketplace

Yes, I agree. Also there seem to have been quite a few "I might think about selling this but I might not" type posts which could also be deleted, or perhaps moved.

Is there any way of forcing people to read the marketplace rules when they click on "new thread" from within the marketplace?

However, I think in general the marketplace seems to work very well. Just annoying how often I seem to miss out on great deals!

PS If we're being strict, is this actually the right place for this thread? I mean, you're not actually offering anything for sale/trade, are you? :)

I don't have the FA, but I have the F* which has the same optics. It's a fantastic lens, extremely sharp even wide open. The main drawback of the FA version is that it lacks a tripod mount, which is a very useful feature of the F.

Sounds like a reasonably good price, assuming it's in good condition.

I have the following on ebay at the moment, both in extremely good condition.

FA80-320 (silver) SMC PENTAX-FA 1:4.5-5.6 80-320mm telephoto zoom lens (item 230140463677 end time 14-Jun-07 21:21:16 BST)

F35-80 (black) smc PENTAX-F 1:4-5.6 35-80mm zoom lens k10d *istd k100d (item 230141238889 end time 16-Jun-07 20:32:10 BST)

The 80-320 is a great long zoom on the digital bodies.
