K-1 troubleshooting/feedback thread (not bugs)

My K1 has a bad distance of the sensor. The focal plane is not exact. I cannot reach infinity with short wide angle like 24mm and wider.
I sent for repair under warranty from the pentax store. They kept the body all 3 months and now they give it back they changed the auto focus module! Those genius did nothing to cure it. I am mad!

Is the K-1 good for a beginner?

Really a lot of good advices here. I do believe the K1 should have been the first digital camera for pentax back in the day before the istDS. I do believe that an amateur is going to love this camera because it is sturdy, intelligent, and the image quality is awesome.

Yes I advise you to buy the K1 because and it can last you 10 years easily. You can buy nice prime lenses (K or M lenses) for nothing. And you will progress way faster than buying a novice all auto camera with a kit lens.

Buy the K1, use manual mode with manual focus prime M or K lenses. First lenses to buy that is bang for the buck :
Pentax 50mm 1.7
Pentax 28mm 3.5
Pentax 135mm 3.5

And enjoy life photographying, you can always buy more expensive lens in a couple of years if you enjoy the show, or just sell the K1 and shoot with a phone if lugging camera is not your cup of tea.

Portraiture | Pentax 77 1.8 vs Sigma 85 1.4 | Experiences with each?

I have the FA*85 and I believe is very similar to the sigma and I agree with everything so far said here. It's big and beautiful, but it's really a nice piece of glass which is made for the pro who is doing portrait for a living. I think the size is actually an advantage over the 77!
So I would say go with Sigma for that reason and for the extra light.

Or a cheap alternative is the DA70, cheap and sharp!

New glass - old glass. Which lenses should Pentax revisit?

Yeah, the fa*85 is my absolute favorite lens ever! I have never found a better portrait lens is all the systems that I used before! For micro43 I love the noticron, it's a perfect lens really with perfect sharpness, aberration correction and stunning IQ, but the fa* has just this immeasurable something that keeps on creating those awesome pictures! Side by side the character is unmistakable. Those engineers at Pentax knew what they were doing!

I had a lot of normal lenses for various system, leica m, m43 etc... I have Pentax m42 50 1.4, 55 1.8, Pentax K 50 1.4, K55 1.8, Pentax A all of them 2.0, 1.7, 1.4, 1.2...! Pentax FA 50 1.4, FA50 1.7 too!
I have them all for collecting purpose. It's silly but it hurts no one!

Frankly they are all great, regardless of price, optically the 2.0 is 85% of the 1.2!
Now the greatest bargain I think is the FA50 1.4, it's plenty cheap and produce stunning photo.

If you have the money DA55 is the best though.

I think auto focus, exif info is the way to go for fast editing.

DA*55mm 1.4 is the best for réal life shooting. Super sharp and contrasty. It bests all Pentax normal for pixel peeping. One caveat is the extreme corner. But its pointless and you Will never notice it for réal photography

What was it like to move to the K-1 ?

When I got the Pentax k1, my photo bag got bigger. My lenses were bigger and my files were better!

Now that I get used to it, I crop more and more, as a result I don't bring longer lenses with me anymore, and reduced the number of lens dramatically. So weight is controlled.

This is natural in my opinion as landscapes requirements are more pixels than a portrait for example.

Oh and yes, k1 makes me happier, by using my lenses on FF finally!

I really hope Pentax will be more consumer oriented than pros and offer a 15-30 f4 more sooner than later!
For me too, weight and size is just too much for all those 2.8 DFAs.

Hehe, that little lens is producing what seems to me like stunning shot. I got too much wides, normals, telephoto pentax jewels, but this one is unique! I wish I bought it earlier! Oh wait no I didn't shot a film FF pentax in such a long time! So yeah, K1 kind of made of this lens a brand new interest

I was in Barcelona and got with me K1, F35-80, F17-28 fisheye, and DA*55 in FF mode.

Just want to say that kreping it light makes a more enjoyable time.

With tripod this kit is at the extreme limit weight wise.

The fish eye was extremely great! And at 23-28mm I clean all distortion and get extreme wide FOV.

Very sharp!

Yes it is, fa*24 is an awesome Lens.

Its autofocus is fast especially on k1.

Lovely bokeh for original environmental portraits.

Lovely colors!

Build like a tank!

67mm filter thread that permit use and even stacking filters because is really wider than the glass.

Bayonet hood that I think is brilliantly designed.

Miss a window in the hood for C polarising filter access though, and wish the hood was metal like on the fa*85. Also the silver finish, while leicaish pretty is prone to scratches. Like the leica!

DFA 24-70 or DFA 15-30 for the K-1?

The 15-30mm seems better suited to your actual kit, as you have the normal FOV and portrait FOV covered with you FA limiteds.
It is certain that the fast 24-70mm is like the most used lens for 99% of the photogs, but you don't have the UWA covered right.
I would get both if I have the funds.

Frankly, the 24mm is a gem, i love portraits with it. Stop down its glorious too, but that unique fast is so good to have. The 85mm is phenomenal and I get stunning shots as you would expect from this King of Pentax from the past. I prefer it to all my portrait lens for both usability (fast and quiet focus) and stunning IQ. The 55mm is another lens that is I believe a hidden gem for the k1. Shooting with both the 24 and the 85, I always felt my fa50 1.4 or 1.7 to be lacking when shot wide open. Still they are great lenses! But my curiosity and reviews got me in buying this 55.. I'm glad I did because the IQ is stunning wide open and I shoot a lot WO. I believe the da*55 being the 85mm king of Pentax, they made it stun'ing ... As I was looking for a balanced trio, adding rain withstanding capability lens the 55 is just too good to pass on.
Now I feel equally pleased when I review the shots from a day shooting with the above star trio. They are beautiful lenses in their own right, producing imho loveable IQ, I don't regret spending on a them a bit.
One day, Pentax will release the D-FA* trio, and because of that the price of the FA* star lenses and DA* star will fall down, but I don't care. They all have a feel and rendition to them that scream full frame, with color so vivid and deep, a painterly quality, "pentax aficionados" factor, shoot beautiful and stunning images right out of the box.

Oh and the FA*star being screw focus they will continue working for half a century.

I prefer to have the option for f1.4 than smaller aperture. I love shallow DOF. It comes with a price of weight.

The limited FAs are more suited to small film FF, they feel out of place on the k1, except the 31mm which is a lovely lens to be honest.

I like the pro feeling of the FA*24 and FA*85. When you put them on k1 which is no small camera you know they are made for each other! Same goes for DA*55 that feels so much better than the flimsy-ish FA50s!

I had to buy several FA*85 in order to find a good copy, I guess being old some have haze by now I believe badly stored in humid place. Luckily I found a mint 24mm the first time I bought one, and the DA*55 I bought it new because I can. Just a word of caution.

I think that by asking to see pictures taken that would "convince you" is a bad criteria, because it's not the camera, it's the photog and the post processing, never the camera that is important in producing a good photo!

But if you try one you would surely fall for all the arguments already mentioned!

Love the DA*55 if FF mode!

FA*24 f2 - FA*85 f1.4 - DA*55 f1.4

The Star trio prime, the best in my eye!

DA* 55mm 1.4 on K-1 good extreme corner sharpness?

I am trying to make a hood for this gem.
The knock off hood for the 55-300 has the filter window and the same bayonet mount as the DA*55
3€ hood, and a sharp knife. Don't try this If you are handy with a knife. Yet better use a little saw...

I shaved it until there no difference in corner light fall off...

Need to clean it though.

EDIT: mounts normally, but when reversed mount at 90 degree instead at 0 degree as the original.

Pentax FA 50mm 1.7 is highly recommended, I am starting to prefer it to the 1.4.

It's very light, doesn't need a hood so it's very compact. And the IQ is so good even wide open. Less lateral and longitudinal CA wide open. It's sharper at f2.0 and faster.

The F version seems more available is highly recommended for a fast cheap prime.

On eBay, its way cheaper and faster... dont ask me why!

Btw, i love the feel and above all the look of this strap especially with fa* 24 and fa* 85. The distress brown/kaki and the golden lettering on that smooth leicaish satin chrome is pure lust...
