Thanks guys for the replies. The motor will not work and I can only zoom down to 35mm and then it is stuck and will not go any further to 16mm. Also, will not manual focus.

Woops. Camera slipped out of my hands. Lens hit stone kitchen countertop. Now it wont focus or even try. Other non screwdrive lenses work fine. Sounds like a screwd up DC motor.
I'm in LA. Any suggestions of repair shops?
Thanks

My K5 does the same thing when writing a jpeg to any card if highlight or shadow correction is on. I don't think the card is your problem.

Don't forget there is also a mode in the menu that will take a photo of the sensor to show any sensor dust. The image that comes out is upside-down and backwards. Dust alert. Page 341 in manual. Set up menu page 4 and scroll down in your camera menu.

Zone VI Spot Meter off?

Just went through some of my old Zone VI. Newsletters. Number 37 from November 1983 describes what they (Fred Picker and Paul Horowitz) did and how they did it. They fixed the IR, Uv, two color compensation filters matched to the cells intrinsic reponse. The films they used were Tri x and Poloroid 52. Also used Kodak film response curves and from the meter's manufacturer. They originally modified the Soligar II meter and the Pentax V and Pentax digital. They collaborated with Richard Ritter.
Check it out if you can find the newsletter. Very detailed.

Zone VI Spot Meter off?

Nice discussion. After reading through this I pulled out my Zone VI Pentax Spotmeter V from my sock drawer. Haven't used it in decades but still seems to work with the old battery.
Any Zone VI modified meter should have a sticker on it that says "Modified by Zone VI studios inc." The Zone VI zone scale sticker could be added to non modified meter.
I remember when I got the meter back it came with some parts they replaced for the modification.
Second the suggestion to get the Fred Picker Zone system book. I still have mine and it can be described as the Zone System for Idiots (like me) . Really really helpful.

iPhone as remote for K-1?

There are lots of apps in the app store (Iphone and Android) that do what you need or more. Trigger trap is cool but has a dongle along with the software but you might find something similar as a stand-alone application in the app store like DSLR Remote Plus for Android by bitshift. Just do a search for DSLR remotes (Pentax).

Monitor IPS still need calibrating?

Back in the days of my first career I was a stage lighting designer.
It is well known to us that our brains will color correct to what our brains want "correct" colors to be. When I did beauty pageants I would pink up the stage lights slightly to make the ladies and their costumes more appealing and healthy looking than the warm/yellow color temps of the stage lighting without gel. Those coming into the room would see everything on stage in a nice rosy healthy glow. Those sitting in the room for any time would see flesh tones and costume colors "correctly" and not notice that I was I was "helping" out. Similarly at auto show events I would differentiate the spaces of the car models slightly. The manufacturers of course wanted their very expensive show displays accurate. Not a problem because anyone spending any time in each space would not notice the change. Only from afar looking at a space side by side would you notice a difference. I am sure an uncalibrated monitor, with nothing next to it to compare to, would seem correct to the viewer. So, I agree that even the best IPS monitor would need objective calibration.

This year was my K-5's fourth trip to Burning Man. It comes out a mess but all it requires is a wipe down. I did have the sensor cleaned before this year though. It's amazing it does not get ruined.
Tickets to the Burn? Lots of options and we've never had a problem but it takes some ingenuity and such. If you want to go, there is a lot more involved than just getting a ticket!
I use my K-5 for daytime and a pocket Canon for nighttime as I like to be very mobile at night and do not want to haul around a DSLR. Lots of dancing and other wild stuff to get involved with.
Here is a link to my Flickr album from this year (take a look around and you will find my other BM albums). Very camp specific but you'll get an idea of the great opportunities for fun photos.

Just was at Samy's in Culver City this afternoon. Amazingly they had a K-1 on display. Unfortunately it was all the way down on one end of a long counter in the rear of the counter. There was some kind of old Pentax bridge camera that I didn't recognize gathering dust in front of the K-1.
No K-70 nor anything else current on display.

Deciding on gear to bring to Burning Man

I went and rechecked/recleaned my gear (K-5 and WR kit lens plus 50-200 WR) this weekend. I change cards every other day (see my prior post on this). I found no visible dust in the card slot. No dust around the mount. I had forgotten to clean in the pop up flash for a couple of years(!) and there was minimal dust inside the housing but some around the edges. Dust around the battery housing seals but very very little in the compartment. Checked my lenses and doesn't seem to be any intrusion inside although the outsides were a mess. BTW: I use B + W filters with nano coating and very little dust sticks to the filter.

My method of cleaning involves non-scented baby wipes. I don't do the vinegar thing because I'm worried about the PH of the vinegar. I shot at the Venice Street fair this weekend with an eye towards spots in the sky indicating dust on the sensor and all was fine. If you were there last year you know how terrible the dust storms were. This year it was paradise in comparison. As I've said, this is this camera's 4th burn. It just keeps going and going.

Hi Dreamer
So happy you had your mind blown at the Burn.Sorry about getting sick but it sounds like you had the burn you needed if not the one you wanted as they say. Attached find a photo that I took of Trey's photo walk. A total accident. Just happened to be in the back when he turned around, looked at me, and asked that I take a photo of the group. I was picking my wife up from volunteering at the coffee shop at the time so couldn't stay. Maybe you are in this photo? I throw up a bunch of photos of our camp (Black Hole Literary Society) as a gift to campers as soon as possible. Here is our 2016 album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/eddaytona/albums/72157670545557174
Hope to see yours when you are ready.
Dusty Hugs

Naw, mine looked like that but as it is a K-5 on it's 4th Burn, I only needed to clean the sensor. It just keeps on going with no problems at all.

Deciding on gear to bring to Burning Man

So... Did you go? How did you do? I found the Trey Ratcliff photo walk by accident. He held it on Wednesday this year. Started out between Center Camp and the Space Whale. Epic burn as usual. Temple burn was emotional and white hot. I volunteered at Playa info and a guy came in to report his missing Sony a7s and a bunch of lenses. He found it later but it bummed his burn for a while.
Let us know about your experience.

Deciding on gear to bring to Burning Man

First of all, welcome home. You'll find out very soon what that means. Always happy to help out a Birgin.
The number one thing about Burning Man and cameras is the dust. It will get into everything. No matter what. If you are anal about your gear, or have some really expensive stuff you obsess over, forget it. Leave it home. Only bring what you are prepared to have ruined. Really. There is a haze of dust that never goes away even if the winds are calm, and that never happens.
This will be my 5th Burn. I take my K-5 with the 18-55 WR kit lens and 50-200 WR and a tripod, or better, a monopod. I bring my other gear too but have found that I don't use it much.
I also bring a Canon S120 pocket camera. This camera lives inside a zip lock bag in a pocket The K-5 kit has done really well for the past three trips. The Canon is OK, but it has the retractable zoom and eventually the dust will gum it up. I've been through three such cameras over time.
The advice about not changing lenses (much) is spot on. If you do, make sure the camera is upside down and you are not outside. Hopefully you'll do that in an RV.
You will find that daytime Burning Man is very different from nighttime Burning Man. I use my K-5 during the day and the Canon at night. This is because at night I want to move and dance and don't want to lug an DSLR around.
You want to bring extra charged up batteries. You are completely on your own at Burning Man. Finding power to recharge can be a problem.
Bring a number of memory cards. I lost a camera my first year and while losing it was a drag, what really mattered was what was on the card. Now I use a new card every other day. Memory cards are cheap memories are not.
Put your contact info on everything (including cameras and gear). Lost and found is awesome and if you label something they will return it to you if someone turns it in. Your first shot on every card should be of your contact info.
Look up Trey Ratcliff on Google. He is one of the preeminent Burner photographers and his site has good advice. He has done a photo walk every Tuesday evening for a number of years. Don't know if he will do one this year. Unfortunately, I have other commitments during that time but would love to go once. If he is doing it, go.
Always ask permission if you are taking photos of folks in close proximity. It's polite and the culture of the event.
Read the Survival Guide that comes with a ticket. The Black Rock Desert is trying to kill you. Really. No joke.
Finally, one of the 10 principles of Burning Man is "Immediacy." This may be a once on a life time experience and you really do not want to miss a transformative moment while you are busy with your camera gear.
Have a great Burn!

Do you save SD cards when filled?

There's really no apparent reason for saving them but I'm a little paranoid so I do. Also, new cards are really cheap now so I buy a few new ones each year. I also use different card sizes for my two go-to cameras so I know which card was used with which camera.
Additionally, I like to change out cards often since I lost a camera with five days of photos on it while on an adventure off the grid and away from home. I didn't much mourn loosing the camera (did suck) but loosing all those shots was awful.

Love him or hate him (I like him), Tony Northrup put up a rather complete tutorial of the K-1 on his You Tube channel. It's over an hour long and seems to cover what you'd want to know if you bought the camera. Any K-1 owners want to comment or expand on the video?
