I purchased a K200D from a forum member a few years ago for the reason that is has a CCD sensor. I haven't done a lot of experimenting with it yet, but it is my backup DSLR should my K-30 bite the dust.

Same here; I have a handful of 50s and a 55 (and a 58) but this is my first Pentax brand film-era lens. Can't wait to put it through its paces.

Update: Eric Hendrickson has opened the lens up for me to find a loose stopper screw and some sand (the lens was from a Delaware owner—the sand is no surprise there). After a cleaning and tune-up, it will come back as good as new for a very reasonable repair price. Yippee!

Thanks for the replies. It is a genuine Pentax K-mount, no adapter needed. So far, I am leaning toward sending it to Eric and have contacted him, but of course, I appreciate the thoughts here on the forum as well.

Hello. I recently came upon a great thrift store find, the SMC Pentax K-mount 1:1.8/55mm film lens, but it is without infinity focus. I can only take close-up shots with it. I am debating whether to send it to Mr. Hendrickson for repair, keep it, or sell it on Ebay. The glass looks fantastic. I do not attempt DIY disassembly at home. Any suggestions? I do not want to spend much on repair unless the outcome will override the investment. (It was $10 for the camera it was attached to, the lens, and a beautiful plush zip case, so for me, that was a no-brainer since I needed a camera case.)

Just to help this along: I have one of these lenses and cannot describe the magic it is capable of rendering, which is why I will never part with it. You can do incredible, artsy things with this lens, including utilizing the famous "Sears Glow". Just awesome.

I agree with getting a new battery. I recently did just that with my K-30 and gained new life for the camera. I got the genuine Pentax battery.

This happened to my K-r in 2012, about two months after I purchased it. Nothing solved the problem, so I notified the seller who vouched for its being under warranty. I had it repaired for free. No problem since then.

Search this site using the search feature in the upper right corner of any page, or search the Canon forums. You might also search YouTube and Flickr. Another idea is to get hold of a discontinued digital Pentax body (K-r, K-30) which can be had for fairly cheap these days here on the marketplace or on Ebay, Adorama, KEH, or B&H. There is nothing like a body and lenses that were designed for each other. That being said, there is an excitement in using adapters and experimenting in the other direction. There are Facebook groups that do just that. If you are a Facebook user, use the search bar at the top to find what it is you are looking for. Here is an example of a group I belong to on Facebook named Photography with Classic Lenses: https://www.facebook.com/groups/classiclenses/

What I enjoy about that Facebook group is that it is primarily comprised of folks with mirrorless cameras, but everyone (including DSLR shooters) is welcome to share information and photos of scenes in which they used various adapters to attach classic, quirky, ancient, foreign, expensive, cheap, etc. lenses to to a wide variety of cameras. Lots of info with which to learn and experiment.

Tall Girl Looking for Monopod

Hello.

I am interested in finding a monopod to support my K-30 with the DA 55-300 or F70-210 attached. I am 5'8" and need to know how tall the monopod must extend (with camera attached) so that I am not stooping over. The Giottos MML 3270B says it extends to 67". Anyone have experience with that model? I see there is also a 3290B as well.

The budget is at a low point, so I need to know if I there is anything available that is inexpensive, yet sturdy enough.
I am also looking at Manfrotto's 234 RC tilt head to attach to the top. Do I need to know about two different screw size threads when shopping for the above items?

Thanks for any and all tips.

One-Push File format JPEG to RAW+

Finally found my answer in another thread: The one-push file format JPEG to RAW (a toggle on/toggle off button that MUST BE HELD DOWN for a bit) sets your shot as a RAW instead of a JPEG before you take the shot. if you are in single-frame drive mode, you can do the same thing AFTER taking the shot with the EV compensation button either during instant review or during playback, provided you have not taken any more shots afterward.

I have begun uploading photos to Flickr for various reasons. However, I leave my absolute best photos for uploading to my 500 pix account. There, I have a "Plus" account which gives me a link to show folks what I can do. (It is not a true portfolio—that is reserved for those who purchase an "awesome" account). There are those who recommend "getting your pictures out there", which I do on Facebook from time to time just to remind people that I am still active as an amateur photographer. Again, those are not my best photos. It seems a paradox to upload your second-best photos, but I do it anyway because even those photos have their purpose. I am not totally comfortable with uploading my absolute best photos to Flickr because, let's face, it, people will rip off your photos in a heartbeat. I am hoping that some kind folks scouring Flickr will find my 2nd or 3rd best photos and actually use them and give me credit, but if not, they get a freebie.

I said all that to say that my ultimate goal is to get the 500 pix account loaded with my best shots. 500 pix protects your uploads with a GIF layer so that the would-be thief who thinks he or she can "right-click" to get your photo gets a transparent GIF instead. At least that is what I remember. I think that site also has a right-click protection statement that the would-be clicker gets.

Since my first purchase of a Pentax DSLR (the wonderful little Pentax K-r), I have only had pop-up flash. Now, with my Pentax K-30 (a huge step up for me), I still only have pop-up flash. Oftentimes, when using my pop-up flash, I will lower my ISO to 100 and my aperture to around f/8. With the shutter speed as high as it will go once the pop-up is activated (1/180), I get very nice pictures this way. Sometimes I have to raise the ISO, but I never have to raise it above 200-250 with pop-up flash on people shots indoors.

Thinking about moving up to a hot shoe flash, but I have not done so as of yet.

The photo with flash is nice. Even the one without flash can be saved. Try not to be too heartbroken. At least you got some keepers, and sometimes less is more. Will you get another opportunity to photograph the three of them again? This is a learning experience. I have made this error over and over again and now I use flash indoors almost all of the time now, rarely using it on full blast, though. Even on "auto" you can turn down the flash.

Keep up the good work!

I would not shoot that slow (1/30), hand-held, no matter the lighting. My choice of shutter speed when hand-held is always at least 1/125, but often higher, like 1/160. In low light, at that speed (or higher), one of my workarounds is to set the ISO from 100-200, the aperture to f/8 (a bit more or less), and use the pop-up flash set to -2 or -1.7.

You would have to accomplish this in manual mode; challenging, but possible. Experiment with the settings. Take time to tweak one or more until you get the look you want.

Once the pop-up flash is engaged, your shutter speed will not go above 1/180 which is why it is helpful to lower the flash output to eliminate washed-out photos.

Experiment! Have fun.

While I appreciate the kind of persona the best suits a wedding photographer, it would not work for me because I am an introvert. The last thing on earth I would want to do is order people around and take charge. That is why I enjoy nature photography so much. A shout-out to great wedding photographers, though. Your work is wonderful and very much needed.

I have toyed with the idea of coming along as a "second shooter" but even that is a position of responsibility that I am not qualified to take on. Consequently, although photography is my passion, to be true to what makes me happy, I have decided to keep photography as a dedicated hobby and let the pros handle important events such as weddings. If I take a camera along to a wedding, it would only be for pure fun, yet it would probably be even better to not take the camera at all so that I can enjoy myself without pressure.
