Batteries for Flashes.

I’ve been using Bonai batteries, with a 2800 mA capacity. They seem to hold up well popping off full power flashes. I have no idea about their discharge curve.

I use generic chargers mostly and the original Eneloop model I got years ago. They all seem to work fine.

Not a lot of people want a Q but those who do really, really want one! Since supply is low the prices will go up. The Q continues to be a very polarizing camera system which is a positive testament to its design in my book!

For as great as the K-1 and K-1 II are there is plenty of room for better performance whether it's better/faster AF with wider coverage, increased burst modes, hybrid viewfinders, video capabilities, etc. All these features (and more) can easily be divided up between two classes of bodies. Even targeting different users is easy enough. One body would be a field/landscape/travel camera while the other could be more action and video oriented. Lots of options exist.

Based on price alone a used K-3 would serve you well even if you are not a power user shooting in raw format. Just get it and don't look back.

How to Carry It?

I don't think Pentax made a 28-105mm f/4 lens. Are you referring to the recently release D-FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6? That camera and lens combo isn't too heavy. Are you using a battery grip?

The flash isn't super huge either, I think.

I use a plain, simple Lowepro 160 with two compartments. A large one holds the camera and a small narrow holds the flash. There's enough pockets inside and outside for batteries, extra cards, etc.

I recommend you drink the bottle of whiskey ASAP to reduce the amount of weight you carry. Never mind the immediate effect. :)

I'd rather carry an ultra wide angle lens instead of a pistol. You can get more shots with it before needing to reload. :)

AF.C and focus priority

You are battling many front here.

I also notice that the "Focus Priority" setting doesn't always seem to take effect. The camera will fire off a shot even though focus has not been achieved. Try setting focus to the minimum distance and then lift the camera to infinity. The camera will try to focus but fail and still fire off a shot. It's like the system gets confused or times out.

Performance is better when switching to a burst mode, either L, M, or H. Then the camera will definitely focus before firing off a shot.

Once in burst mode and AF-C the system still lags and is still easily confused. The camera may find focus but the lag is long enough that the subject will have moved out of focus when the mirror goes and up and the shutter fires. This is especially evident when photographing subjects approaching you and the lens needs to move focus toward you. Panning across or shooting at "infinity" or "almost-infinity" is much easier since the lens doesn't need to move its elements very far to get a confirmation

You can help it by shooting with more DoF (i.e. smaller aperture), shooting from further away, and using the fastest focusing lens you can find. I didn't see any mention how far away you are from the dogs, which lens you are using, and your settings. Can you share that information?

Getting sharp or acceptably sharp images is not impossible but it takes some planning and some working around the gear. Pentax is not known for superior auto-focus capabilities in these scenarios. If you need an auto-focus powerhouse then you need something like a Sony or Fuji body.

645Z vs. Fuji MFD Mirrorless

Your gear should follow your needs and give you the results + satisfaction required by your work. It may be too early to be able to rent a Fuji system for trial and evaluation purposes.

Have you shot with a mirrorless system before? MIrrorless vs mirror can be a very different experience. I like mirrorless for the live view and histogram overlay. Other people say the EVF drives them crazy.

Maybe you could try an APS sized Fuji to get a feel of the menu layout and general Fuji shooting experience.

Tamron 70-200 or a Sigma 70-200 HSM II for figure skating shoot?

Depending on how far you will be sitting from the rink, and your niece more specifically, you may find yourself basically at infinity. The bit of +/- distance change as she skates around the rink will only cause the focus throw to wobble a tiny bit. You shouldn't have too many problems with that. The screw drive motor will make little zt-zt-zt-zt sounds as you track her across the rink. You could probably get away with release priority for panning.

Now, if she starts skating toward you before turning then you may be in trouble. You find yourself fighting the slow screw drive motor, the weak AF-C algorithms, and the low light of an indoor arena. Set your camera to focus priority. No use filling up your SD card with soft, out of focus images of oncoming subjects. Set your camera to TAv mode with auto ISO. T = 1/1000 or faster to freeze the motion as you pan precisely. A = f/3.2 for a bit of DoF help.

On an APS system 200mm will give you FF reach of 300mm. That may be enough.

I've had both completely black images and partially blocked images from the rare moment when the mirror and shutter lost synchronization. The part of the image not blocked in the partially blocked image was just fine.

I've had the shutter and mirror lose synchronization before. The camera makes a really funky sound - not the usual *schnick-clap*. That gives a dark frame. It's a very, very rare occurrence though.

Reading the T&C's I see the discount is capped at $60. So, in order to get the full benefit you should limit your maximum price to $60 / 0.15 = $400. Still not a bad deal above $400 but it will be less than 15%.

The Fuji X-H1 is a content creation beast capable of 4k video and it has a very capable AF system, a high resolution EVF, plus all the weather sealing and IBIS of a Pentax body. The body sells for about $1650 on Amazon. I think the image sensor is a little better than the K-3 II but let's remember the K-3 II is an older body.

The older Fuji X-T2 bodies is probably closer to the K-3 and KP bodies.

We often overestimate resolution requirement because we don't think of the target for the image. Are we printing it? How big? Are we just sharing on social media? To whom? Even 6MP is more than plenty in most cases.

What really makes/breaks an image is the color, rendering, contrast, etc. All the subjective elements that aren't as easy to measure and quantify.

Pentax K-1 II and Capture One

Hi Stefan,

First, make sure your computer monitor is calibrated using something like the Spyder 5. Thatís a must-do. No way around that first step.

Second, Capture One is a beast but once tamed produces some of the best colors and contrasts you will see anywhere. I always start with a Linear Reponse under the Base Characteristics tool. Yes, the image will look flat but that shows you the raw, RAW files you are working with. The K-1 has lots of latitude so the image will crisp up nicely.

From there, in general do this :

1) Adjust white balance
2) Adjust exposure
3) Add contrast
4) Season the saturation to taste
5) Adjust highlights and shadows
6) Add some Clarity and Structure (using Natural or Punch), 15 and 10 are good values
7) Add sharpening. C1 is pretty conservative with sharpening. Something like 200/1/1 is a good boost.

From there you tweak as necessary. Adjust your levels, play with the curve. Save some presets so you can apply them with one click.

It takes a lot of practice to not only master the software but image processing in general. After a couple thousand  images youíll know what the image needs. Then itís a matter of understanding the mechanics of what you click on and where to get the effect.

Try watching some of the Youtube tutorials too. Even if you only absorb 20% of the material thatís still 20% more than you had before. :)

I agree. The FF MILC market is setting itself up for an implosion or at the very least a serious correction. Too many players, too many mounts, too many offerings, I donít know how long the market can sustain this. Sony did right by entering early and they were fortunate it took Canon and Nikon 5 years to offer a competitive product. I donít think Sony will be able to hold on to their leader status like they did.

Video - honestly, for me, I think if you want to shoot video then get a video camera. Why dilute a traditional stills camera with this functionality? The market thinks otherwise and Iím sure there are hardworking pros out there that need both in one package. :)

I can totally understand Ricoh's frustration the KP didn't sell as well as a Fuji X-T2 ... but the X-T2 (and now X-T3) is power house 4k camera with on-chip phase detection to enable more reliable, faster, and accurate focusing. Like it or not, Ricoh has to get on board with 4k and they have to really step up with AF. Personally, for me 4k is useless since I do not create videos but the marketplace expects this. AF is definitely a weak spot for Ricoh unless you only photograph stationary subjects. Even then, it's still a little weak compared to other mirror'ed systems.

"Fix" those two things and more people will flock to the K-mount ecosystem.

Item for Sale
Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 with original box and some papers

Asking Price
120.00 USD

Item Location
Nevada (United States)

Item Description
Everyone needs a Nifty Fifty, right? Well, I happen to have two!! :D

I think I am the second owner of this fine lens. It comes with the original box, generic warranty paper, and a card indicating the matching serial number. The only paper missing is the original generic owners manual but I have a feeling you can figure out how this lens works. ;) Front and rear lens caps are included. I am also including a generic rubber hood.

The condition is excellent. Front and rear glass elements are clean and clear. If there is a speck of dust inside then I can't see it. Blades are clean and are smooth and snappy. I've had a lot of fun shooting sharp, poppy images with it. It works great on both APS and FF systems. Wide open the lens renders with a lack of contrast and sharpness is a bit low compared to f/8. Using software like Capture One I can very easily crisp up the image without making it look too seared, blocky, and burnt. Stopping down the lens gives excellent results. I'll confess this lens probably won't match the wide open, even-across-the-frame performance of the D-FA 50mm "Fat Fifty" but this also doesn't cost $1k either.

Price is $120. Buyer to pay shipping charges. I'm guessing this will be around $7. Send me your location and we'll nail down the exact charge. You pick the carrier : US Postal, FedEx, or UPS. I prefer US Postal.

I would like to be paid through PayPal but will happily accept cash, check, and money order if you can get it to me.

The buyer will have 7 days after receipt to evaluate the lens. It can be returned at the buyer's expense for a refund of the lens price.

Complete Pentax Q7 kit : 01 + 02 + 06 + 08

400.00 USD

Item Description
I think I've been bit by the selling bug!

Up for grabs here is my Pentax Q7 kit. I am the original owner of all the gear. The general condition of this kit is between very good to excellent. Here's a rundown.

1) Pentax Q7 : 02 + 06 lens kit : $250

This kit includes the Q7 camera, the 02 standard zoom, and the 06 telephoto zoom. This kit was intended for the Japanese market. All the documentation is in Japanese! There's even special papers advertising the Q line of lenses an application to join the Ricoh Pentax Family Club! :D This makes me think how differently the Q line was marketed in Japan vs the US. Of course, the camera has English language menus and is fully configurable in English. You can always download an English version of the owners manual from Ricoh's website. All the original packaging is included as you see in the photo. I am also including a second battery. The lens has generic uWinka and JJC hoods. Front and rear caps are included. Unfortunately, I cannot find the body cap yet. I will keep looking.

Everything is in very good to excellent condition except for the 06 lens. It has two scratches on the front element. These have never affected image quality but should be noted for honesty and transparency.

I am also including the green camera bag seen on the left. It is perfect for carrying this kit plus the two lenses listed below! This kit is intended to contain the 02 and 06 lenses so I will not part this out separately.

2) Pentac Q 01 prime lens : $50

There was a time this fabulous little prime was harder to find than an honest politician. It is very sharp and renders with the typical "Pentax pop!". The lens is clean except for one spec of dust inside. A generic rubber hood is attached to the front of the lens. Unfortunately, I cannot find the original box for the 01 lens! :( I will make sure it is extremely well packed and protected for shipping.

3) Pentax Q 08 wide angle lens : $180

This was the last lens Ricoh released in the Q line so it has some significance. This lens is also very sharp and offers even performance across the frame. It makes for a great alternative to other wide angle alternatives in u4/3, APS, and especially FF. The Q7 + the 08 lens is very small and easy to take in addition to another complete kit of another system. I have the original box and papers. The lens is clean. I never had a hood for it.

Separately these three items come to $480. If you buy everything then I will sell it for $400. This will give you a complete, ready-to-go Q7 kit!

I used this kit as my airline travel kit. It's small, light, and very portable when traveling. Now I don't travel much on airplanes and my current photography is centered around sporting events with fast action. This kit is sitting idle and belongs in hands that will use it more.

I will happily ship anywhere through US Postal, UPS, or FedEx. Shipping will probably be $25 - $30 depending on your location.

I would like to be paid through PayPal but will accept cash, check, and money order in US dollars.

The buyer has 7 days from the date of receiving the kit to evaluate The buyer is welcome to return the kit at their expense for a refund of the kit price.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to answer them. I am more than happy to post extra pictures of the items. :)
