Setting permanent exp comp

My K3 ii tends to over expose about 0.7 ev. I set exp comp minus 0.7 to compensate but its annoying having to do this evry time i switch the camera on. Is there a way to make the camera remember this setting?

I don't get that. Those two lenses do not cover all needs. Sigma, Nikon, Canon produce extensive ranges of long lenses, different lengths, different, apertures, zooms and primes. Thats why everyone uses them.

Looking for Honest Opinions: Leaving Pentax for Wildlife?

Just my 2 cents worth. I heartily agree Pentax options at the long end are very limited. It's a great great shame. With the weather-sealing and ruggedness associated with Pentax, they should be wiping the floor in the wildlife department, or at least, being contenders, not a sideshow.

So, I've had a look through some of the old catalogue, and see some gems in there (all of which seem very hard to find used):

F* 600mm f/4
F* 250-600 f/5.6
FA* 300 f/2.8
FA* 400 f/5.6
FA* 600mm f/4
FA* 250-600 f/5.6

Optically, they seem to be pretty sweet, so how hard would it be for Ricoh to ressurect some of these designs with updated AF systems? Add to this, a 400mm f/2.8, a 400mm f/4 and perhaps a 200-400 f/4

I think it's sorely needed and long overdue.

FPS question

:)

It does seem odd the way it goes with an M lens. Even stranger, put it in live view and it fires full speed. No, it's nothing to do with cards, or catch in focus. Definitely something between the camera and good ol' SMC Pentax-M 50 1:1.4. I just don't know what.

OK OK ,thanks all. I think I have it figured. I had an M lens attached. Seems whatever you do with an M lens on, it's not going to go full tilt.
K-5 definitely doesn't do this.

FPS question

So far loving the K-3 ii. Feels like a huge leap from the K-5 iis. Love the focus peaking, the bigger screen, way better AF, love the shutter feel and sound, really keen on the pixel shift, look forward to trying astrotracer, and GPS logging. But, one thing is baffling me. Whatever I try, I cannot get 8fps performance from the camera. I compare it to the K-5 and it feels way slower. I set them both up in manual, 1/125 sec, no card in camera and on C-high, MF. The K-5 gives zippy bursts at 7fps, the K-3ii is giving me 4-5 fps (by my guesstimation). I've been through all the menus to look for an option I might have been missing, but nothing to see.
What am I doing wrong? :(

I know, sure. It just doesn't grab my attention the way a big knob would. I'm used to looking for it when I press the button to change it. Then it disappears of course. I actually hate having multiple displays of stuff. Overcomplicates things for me. Guess it's the way my brain works (or doesn't).

You are forgetting the fact that you not only have to switch modes, you have to then select your speed/aperture/iso whatever. When you are turning the dial on the Fuji Xt-1 for example, you are also performing this task. The two go together, and I personally find it a brilliant way of working.

Just as importantly you get to see where your settings are at. I am forever not knowing where my Exp Comp is set on my Pentaxes. I know it's displayed on there somewhere but it just isn't nearly as noticeable as on a physical dial.

Don't understand why more manufacturers don't just display the shutter count in a menu somewhere, like Fuji do. Saves a lot of hassle.

It's weird eh? They sell a shit load of cameras, at prices pound for pound twice the price as Pentax. How they mess it up? And how is Pentax not in worse straits than Nikon with their tiny margins and relatively tiny user base?

What I meant by "retro" was in reference to the exposure controls. Body styling is secondary.

Aha, yes, well spotted. Thanks for paying attention! But, you see I have to be pragmatic. The price I got the k-3 ii for is ridiculous - way lower than I would pay for a KP :)

---------- Post added 02-14-17 at 05:52 PM ----------

Well, you are quite right, but it's about the bottom line in this case. The price was irresistible. I'll be shedding a K-5.

---------- Post added 02-14-17 at 05:54 PM ----------

Thanks, I look forward to trying it out. Particularly the GPS - I'm so sick of not knowing where photos were taken. And the flu card - interested to see how it works.

And if I seem inconsistent, well, I've just ordered a nice old MX as well :)

Yes. Maybe it's just me. I like as few variables hanging as possible. I don't like having to check if the little asterisk is on or not. It's another factor that I could mess up.

Actually I do have an open mind. I also use Nikon cameras and until it went in the sea, a Fujifilm too and a Hasselblad that I recently sold. Have also been know to use Olympus M43 cameras which are also excellent. I'll tell you why I make this point if it hasn't become clear:

1. Because I feel that the KP is occupying a very narrow niche and is not distinguishing itself enough. Old style interfaces have proven to be popular (e.g. Fuji). I thought diversifying the product could give it an advantage, and it is certainly something I would like to use. As it is, the KP is of no appeal to me, as the K-3ii and K-70 both represent better deals IMO. Obviously now it's too late for the KP, but maybe next time...

2. Because I have a range of Pentax lenses, and currently two bodies which I like. For reasons of expense and practicality I would not want to have to buy a parallel Fuji system, which has fewer lenses available anyway and a less refined feature set in other areas that Pentax really nails (WR, IBIS, OVF, batt life, etc).

In short a KP with shutter, EC and ISO dials would be close to being my dream camera. It would then only lack the Foveon sensor - improved for high iso of course...!

I prefer the idea of a digital LX myself.

---------- Post added 02-06-17 at 07:59 PM ----------

If you need a part of your subject to stay at identical exposure over a series of shots you need manual. Say you are photographing portraits of someone on a black background, close up headshots and full body, Av mode will give you different exposures. For any given situation, once you have found the 'correct' exposure, it's just reassuring to have it set manually and know it's not going to be messed up. No more checking histograms...

btw I find Tav mode has a drawback, and that is it will overexpose once your ISO hits the floor (80). I think Pentax should add an auto adjustment feature where it will boost the shutter once you've hit minimum ISO and avoid overexposure.

I think you'll find the interface is a very large part of it. The first time I got an X100 was a revelation. It felt like real photography again. It was like using film, but in a digital way. Even the b&w files looked like film (the jpg engine is very good). Something I can't quite explain. I'd never had a camera that just grabbed me by the neck and made me use it, all the time. Maybe it's something you should try.

You may be right, but I don't see it needs a whole lot of R and D. Rewiring and relabelling a few dials is not too hard for an innovative technology company like Ricoh. I;m not so technical and of course there's probably a little more to it than that, but I have faith in these people!

As for the market. Undoubtedly most of the people this would appeal to are not here on this forum. The folks on Pentaxforums are mainly existing Pentax users, happy with the current offerings by Pentax (I am one of them) and that's fine. But the 95% (correct me if this figure is wrong) of photographers using other brands are over on Fujiforums or Leicaforums and elsewhere, and this is possibly something that would attract them to a Pentax model. But they aren't here to yell "hell yeah!" The advantages Pentax has over Fuji are the big legacy of native glass that can be used - this simply doesn't exist for Fuji (except via adapters in which you lose a lot of functionality) - weather sealing and IBIS (also features Fuji don't have in the same way)

You mean form over function? No! This is all about function. It's a different approach that's all.
You want all your usual controls and functions - well you have them already in the K-3ii, the K70, the K-1. This is a complimentary notion, that goes back to a more standard approach to exposure control. You need 1/3 stop shutter speeds? Plenty of cameras can do that. But the whole world got by just fine without them for decades and many still do. Even a whole stop under or over exposed these days amounts to a fraction of a second correction in PP. I don't personally need it and I'd say leave it out in this concept. As for user modes. They annoy the hell out of me personally, since I need to remember what the hell I set them all to. I guess I'm just more of a show-me-hands-on guy. Horses for courses.

---------- Post added 01-30-17 at 07:58 AM ----------

Doesn't require any lens re-working. Legacy lenses with aperture rings could be rigged to work the old way. If no ring present the camera takes over. Not so hard.

---------- Post added 01-30-17 at 08:00 AM ----------

You got it.

---------- Post added 01-30-17 at 08:06 AM ----------

People keep coming up with this fallacy.
I'm not saying replace the K-1, K3 ii and K-70 with retro-dialled cameras. No! They exist, they remain. I am saying along side, offer something a little different, because the line up looks a little overbaked to me. All looking a little too similar... It's called diversification.
This has the opposite effect to what you are saying. It expands the potential user base by appealing to a broader church. What is difficult about this concept? It doe not just appeal to old time photographers. Young students still learn on K1000s believe it or not!! And they love the real feel of old cameras. Haven't you seen the whole 'hipster' movement? Furthermore, the concept is proven, with the very substantial success Fujifilm are having with this concept. It's not a wild shot in the dark!!!

I understand the K-3 ii will soon be replaced, but it has a shutter life of 200,000. That makes it a huge bargain on the used market one the replacement comes out. Wonderful as it will be I am sure, the K-3 ii becomes even more compelling if you can pick up a nice one for 500 euros or less. (I currently have a K5 and a K5iis. I am looking to replace one of them, but it will be with either a K-3ii or a K-70 - not a KP at that price.)
