Fungus

Does anybody have recommendations for a good, cheap place to have fungus cleaned from a lens? I have an SMC Pentax-M 50mm 1.4 that has fungus. It's light and doesn't seem to effect image quality, but I'd like to get rid of it.
Is it possible to clean it myself? I'm pretty good at things like that, but I don't have any technical training. How much would I be looking at to clean it?

So if I did want it, how much should I offer him for it? Or would it be foolish to put a lens with fungus into my camera bag. I don't know if it can spread to other lenses or get into a bag.

I already have a Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4, but I thought it would be nice to have the Pentax-M for its K-mount convenience. I paid $50 for my 50mm 1.4 Takumar and felt like that was a good deal. They've been going from $70-$90 on Ebay and the K-mounts have been going for more than that. If anyone would sell me a K-mount 50mm 1.4 for $50, I would love to have it, but I've never seen one that cheap.

Buying decisions - any input appreciated!

I bought a K20D in July when it was $699 on Amazon and if I had it to do over again right now, I'd buy the K20D for $620. There is no way I could personally justify paying twice as much money for a camera with only moderate improvements. The white balance improvement is one that might be worth paying a little extra for, but not twice as much. Maybe if the K7 was $850 or something, I'd consider choosing it over a $620 K20D. If you want to buy the camera right now and price is a significant factor, I think it's a no brainer. Why not get the K20D and use the savings to get another nice lens?

So a friend/former student of mine wants to sell me a lens. It's a Pentax-M 50mm f1.4. He wants $40 but it has fungus (light to moderate?). He's letting me borrow it to see whether or not I want to buy it.
I've taken several photos with the lens and I can't really tell whether or not the fungus is having an effect on the photo quality.
Will this lens get progressively worse? If I decide that I want to buy it, would the fungus have the ability to "infect" my other lenses if I keep it in the same bag?
I'd like to know if it would be a good purchase. I don't know much about lens fungus except for the fact that it etches glass.

By the way, it broke my heart to see a lens like this with fungus in it.

I've been trying for about 30 minutes to find a post about this. I'm sure someone has already addressed the issue.
My question is; can I get shake reduction to work with my m42 lenses?
The option to input focal length is greyed out in the menu options. I guess this means my k20D doesn't recognize that there is a lens mounted?
The lenses work fine, I just can't get shake reduction on. Any help would be appreciated.

I found an old original screw mount reversing ring to use with my old Takumar lenses. It was only $10 on Ebay. It's very usable if you have a screw mount adapter already.

Snap-on lens cover on Takumar?

I found this on Ebay: item number 280386660971
It's a 49mm snap on lens cover. One of the lenses I ordered came with a leather case but no lens cover. Would this snap-on cover work on my Takumar lens or would it make contact with and scratch the front lens element?

Thanks

I bought this on ebay: VANGUARD TRACKER AP-364 Pro MONOPOD for $24.99
I think I got lucky and ended up being the only bidder on item # 330351212047. It's going for $44 on Amazon and got good reviews. I sure hope it works well. I'll update the thread with my assessment as soon as I've tested it out.

Thanks for everybody's help and advice

Oil on apeture blades

So it's not something that is just inevitable as a characteristic of aging lubricant? Are you saying that it's always indicative of a repair that will soon be necessary instead?

So, from what I gather, since I'm shooting with a k20d and using full manual only for older lenses, it doesn't matter at all if oil is on the aperture blades or not.

Anybody have any old Takumar lenses with nice oily/greasy aperture blades that they'd like to sell me at a discount?? (joking, sort of)

Maybe the title is an exaggeration. I could live with a little bit of dust in the viewfinder, but somehow, I've got a big piece of something in there. It looks like it might be pet dander. It's just one big piece and it's really irritiating. I've tried blowing it out with the air thingy to no avail. If I can't get used to it, can someone point me to a place on the net that will tell me how to clean the viewfinder? I can't find any such place (granted I've only looked for about 15 min.)

Thanks

Nope, you're right. No rain protection. I'll just carry around a trash bag or poncho for emergencies. I wouldn't have bought it if it weren't so discounted and if it weren't at a local store.

You know, I think you've got the right idea there.

I can't see using more than two bags, though. I just bought one at Best Buy that was on sale ($36) and it holds all my equipment with room for another lens or two up top. Plus I don't have to wait for it to be shipped to me. It's a Lowepro fastpack 100. When I outgrow it, I'll buy the Kata 467 and use the fastpack for outings where I won't need more than a couple lenses. I'm still tempted to go after that deal on Amazon with the mono-pod.

Thanks for everybody's help!

There's a deal on Amazon right now that's got my attention. It's a Kata 467 with a monfrotto 790 monopod (pretty much thrown in for free). The bag with the monopod and shipping is $90. I read reviews about the monopod and it's not the best. Camera bags are all overpriced, but the monopod makes me feel like it makes this one less overpriced. Should I let that monopod sway me like this?

I looked for the camera bag you're talking about, but I can't find a Quantaray sling bag anywhere. Is Nansu spelled correctly? I can't find anything about it. Your bag sounds great. I just wish I could find it online.

I still don't have my bag yet. I'd like to have a bag that will carry my 13" macbook as well.
I'm looking at Lowepro 250 fastpack and Kata DR 467.
But I've also found these knock off brands like Cuscus that are a whole lot cheaper. Any thoughts on knock off brands? Are they lower quality build or what? Does anyone have any experience with any imitation brands?

Takumar lens price guide

The adapter was a special case. I needed it within a week and the Pentax website shipping listed a predicted 14-17 days. For 2 day shipping, they charged $25 extra, which would have brought the total adapter price to $51. I got mine in 6 days. I see it as a shipping compromise. I saved $6. Also, there is no local camera shop in Gainesville FL. In fact, every camera shop in Tallahassee FL has also closed, and about 4 in Jacksonville have closed. Orlando has a few, but it's such a pain to drive down there.

Could you clarifly the statement about the $17 28mm Takumar purchase? Are you saying you'd expect to buy one for $150 or that you'd be suspicious to buy one for less than that or what?

Takumar lens price guide

I hope this message isn't a disappointment after reading the title. I know that in the lens review section, people list the prices they pay for various takumar lenses, and others as well. There seems to be a HUGE range for most lenses. Between that and what things go for on Ebay, I can't gauge how much I should be paying for these lenses. I'm still looking for some other lenses as well and I'd like to have a better idea of what a good and bad deal is.

Maybe if beginners start posting their recent purchase prices to this page, it will be a helpful updated guide (as opposed to prices that are sometimes a few years old in the lens review section) to lens buyers. Who knows, maybe this post can turn into an easier, more efficient lens price tracking guide.

Here's everything I've bought so far (within the last 3 weeks) and what I've paid (some say I have a bargain hunting gift, I hope it hasn't failed me) All prices include the shipping I've paid. (cents are rounded to the nearest dollar value)

Pentax k20d new (with 16-45 AL II kit lens------------------------$708 Amazon
Super Takumar 135mm 3.5-----------------------------------------$ 46 Ebay
Super Takumar 28mm 3.5-----------------------------------------$ 17 Ebay
Auto Takumar 55mm 1.8-----------------------------------------$ 25 Ebay
Original Pentax K mount adapter with original red/white box-----$ 45 Ebay

I only want two more lenses for the time being:
a 200mm screwmount (preferably Takumar)
and an 85mm screw mount (preferably takumar)

What is a price range say from bargain to overpriced?

Thanks all in advance
