PF 10th Anniversary - Special T-shirts This Week Only!

Nice design, but is it red only? If so, I'll have to skip it if it is. I've 2 dresser drawers full of t-shirts from running, pool, hiking, miscellaneous, and photography. Among those I have 0 red t-shirts and it will stay that way. Sorry. If you come up with something other than red or black, I'm in.

Mirror Noise, normal?

I just got a K-1 and find the mirror up noisy compared to either my K-3 or the K-30 I owned before that. I suspect it is just the way the K-1 is, but since I had this knowledgeable community available I thought I'd ask if it is indeed nothing to worry about.
The below link is to a video on my g-drive which demonstrates the noise.

Regardless of which I get, I intend to keep my K-3, though I may sell some of the lenses I rarely use with it.

I have posted this in the Facebook Pentax Full Frame group, but I expect some valuable opinions are available here so I'll also post it here.

I know it is early in the game, but so far I can't say I've been particularly impressed with the K-1 produced images I've seen. I'm also not so sure I want 36ish mp, rather than 24ish mp both for the concern of hard drive space and the size of the individual pixel sites.
Therefore, I'm still considering jumping ship for my full frame. I have to get new lenses regardless so that isn't a good reason to stay with Pentax. The main reason I want to stay with Pentax is its ruggedness, its ergonomics, and its user friendly interface. The camera I'm most considering changing to is the Nikon D750, I can get into it with their 24-120 lens for about the same money as the K-1.
I'd love to hear other opinions as to why I should stay with Pentax or for that matter why I should change. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Lenses, lenses, lenses... What plans are in place to get 3rd party lens providers, i.e. Sigma, Tamron, etc., on board with the K-1?

They claim to have tethering and they do of a sort, and it is very good for remote control, but IMO tethering is not tethering if it isn't available via Lightroom?

Lightroom/Camera Raw camera profiles, why don't you just create them and provide them to be install in the Lightroom user area?

Generally I get the feeling that Pentax/Ricoh lack of 3rd party support isn't simple a case of small market share. I get the feeling that Pentax/Ricoh doesn't "play well" with others. What are their plans to get more support from all the various 3rd party providers? We'd all like to by original Pentax, but can't necessarily afford it.

Just some frustrations I'm feeling. I was almost out the door to Nikon, but the K-1 sounds fabulous and has partially roped me back in. However, the above issues still concern me.

Personally, I've been suspicious of that LCD's durability since I first saw it. However, people have posted that it is the same as the 645 and that has proven durable.
What I really want to see is a hands on review by this forum with the new kit lens (28-105) because that is probably all I can afford at this time and because I consider that range almost ideal.

Format of Camera Profile files (.dcp)

I saw that too. I've been studying the files with an editor and making small changes which allow me to use the files, say from Canon, to apply to my K-3 files. However, I have to replace text like the camera name, with a field the exact same length. The field length must be stored in it somewhere and, though I'm using a hexadecimal editor, I can't figure out where. The files I'm looking at are not xml tagged files, they're pure binary.
As long as the internal camera name in the file I'm adapting is as long or longer than "PENTAX K-3" I'm able to change it and use the file. However, being a retired programmer, I want to know what the format is.
It isn't a very important thing I suppose, but it was a good way to spend a few hours and my intellectual curiosity has a hold of me now.

Thanks, but I already saw this via a Google search. What I'm trying to find is the format specification of the actual file.

What happens in AF1 if you get back button focus and then take the shot (with the shutter button of course)? Will the focus change on you if you change the composition so that the primary focus area is on a different place in the potential photo? If so, can this be avoided by keeping the back button depressed?
I hope I made it clear what I'm asking.

Seeing you're in MA, I'd strongly suggest you check out Panopticon Imaging in Rockland, MA. They do excellent work and Paul Sneyd bends over backward to please.

I 2nd the split focus idea. I've a Katzeye focus screen on my K-3. It has split focusing plus a rule of thirds grid. I don't think Katzeye is in business any longer so I can only hope the Ricoh has it stock on the FF, though in honesty I doubt it.

Weekly Challenge 332 - Path

I got up early one day and drove to the Cape Cod Canal to hopefully get a decent sunrise. It turned out to be a bad location for the sunrise, but after the sun was a fair amount up I saw it was just below this tree line by the bike/walking/running/maintenance path, I setup and waited. In less than a minute it reached this point and I capture this image. At this time in the morning the path is used predominantly by fishermen on special bicycles adapted to carry rods and tackle. I would have liked to capture a couple of fishermen on the path and actually did at other times, but at this particular moment the path was clear. If you look closely you can see fishermen down along the banks of the canal fishing. It was a multi-image hdr which I tried to keep realistic.

The Fore River Shipyard was once a major economic engine of the So Shore of Massachusetts. It has been closed for many years, just not competitive with foreign ship builders. This is the former main administration building. Taken at mid-day unfortunately, but you take what you can get.

I think I may have found the problem. I think the contacts aren't always making a good contact, I tried loosening the flash, jiggling it around in the hot shot, and then tightening it down again; after that it appeared to work though the result does seem too bright for my taste.

Bolt VS-510P and K-3 TTL

The behavior I observe is that the flash power seems fixed. I'm new to TTL and don't know what to expect. However, lets say I do set the aperture to f/4 in Av mode, the camera will set the shutter speed very slow and the flash will be just too much. If I use Tv mode it seems to work better I think.
The pre-flash may be just too quick, but I haven't noticed that it has happened.

I just got the Bolt VS-510P from B&H. TTL does not seem to work for me. I set the mode to TTL and tried it with the K-3 in aperture, shutter, & programmed, none of them seemed to work. Is there something I need to set on the camera? Is this a problem with the Bolt?
Any suggestions?
