i didn't think anyone was criticizing what a photographer thought s/he needed to take for such an attempt

my one attempt to photograph an eclipse failed utterly due to cloud cover

( unusual for me, usually my biggest problem is " operator error " )

as I was taught by my dad, yes

protects the front glass and the threads from being damaged if the lens is dropped or hit

but only during storage or transport

once I decide to take photos, it comes off with the lens cap

assuming no adverse conditions at that time.

my solution is slightly different if I understand what has been discussed before

I use an Optech US utility strap which is attached to the upper attachment point of the camera body and hangs across my body

I also have a JOBY UltraFit Hand Strap with UltraPlate with the ultra plate attached to the base and the hand strap attached to the same upper attachment point of the camera body

as a back up I have a JOBY Camera Tether Strap for DSLR attached to the strap itself and the metal D ring attached to the same upper attachment point of the camera body - metal to metal contact at all times

this serves as a back up safety should anything else fail

___________________

as far as weight I vary how I carry the camera plus a heavy lens from hanging at my side, to having my hand take some of the weight as well or resting the lens against my off arm or my shoulder

Optech USA also sells a lens loop designed to help hold long heavy lenses but I have not tried them

we have no idea of the terrain where the incident happened -

was there a hill, a curve affecting the view of the other driver

what was the shape of the ditch and did that have any part in the death

I have lost the press on cap of the DA 40mm XS

and no recovery

but on the bright side

I was at the Rivals Sports Bar in the right field corner of Kauffman Stadium for opening day

I started to walk to my seat in the 5th inning and realized I had left the clear plastic bag containing my extra lenses in the bar

since I had been taking photos from that vantage point and had changed lenses while doing so, there is no question that folks had seen what was in the bag

I went back asap ( 10 minutes ) and found it without a problem :D

In that case:

Ruggard Thunderhead 75 DSLR & Laptop Backpack

and

Lowepro Flipside 400 reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database

are two of the back packs I own and I can easily pack a K 3 or K 3 II mounted to my D FA 150-450

_________________

my use of back packs appears to be similar to yours but I still look at features which I looked at when I did hiking years ago just in case:

when ever I buy a back pack I first look for features that makes the pack useful for carrying any type of load such as

(1) waist straps: The majority of a backpack's weight, 80 percent or more, should be supported by your hips.;

(2) Load Lifter Straps: These are stitched into the top of the shoulder straps, and they connect to the top of the pack frame. Ideally, they will form a 45 angle between your shoulder straps and the pack. Kept snug (but not too tight), they prevent the upper portion of a pack from pulling away from your body, which would cause the pack to sag on your lumbar region and

(3) Sternum Strap: This mid-chest strap allows you to connect your shoulder straps, which can boost your stability. It can be useful to do so when traveling on uneven cross-country terrain where an awkward move could cause your pack to shift abruptly and throw you off-balance.

then I look for special features for the expected use of the back pack: does the interior has the loop and hook dividers so you can personalize the interior as you choose, multiple external attachment points and pockets, a " rain " cover and a separate padded section for a lap top or something else

more details about the accident from a local paper

https://www.kansas.com/news/article231767398.html

At 12:32 a.m. Sharpe was driving north on K-2 when he struck a deer, disabling his vehicle, which sat in the south-bound lane.

Sharpe was standing outside his vehicle in a ditch west of the south-bound lane at mile marker K42, when an oncoming vehicle attempted to avoid Sharpe’s abandoned vehicle by driving off the road into the same ditch, hitting Sharpe, according to the report.

The oncoming driver, 45-year-old Ronald Pinkston, was not harmed.

Highway Patrol spokesman Chad Crittenden said Pinkston was driving in accordance to the law and will not be charged.

Pinkston was driving south when he saw Sharpe’s vehicle, which he perceived at the time to be an oncoming vehicle. He did not hit Sharpe’s vehicle, Crittenden said.

“It appears he was in his lane, tried to make an avoidance to get out of the way for a potentially on-coming vehicle,” Crittenden said.
