RICOH ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF HD PENTAX-D FA★50mm F1.4 SDM AW STAR-SERIES LENS

Well, Iíd agree with some of that, except ďnormal viewing distanceĒ is often a range of distances Ė you can either stand back and take in the whole, or move closer and take in the detail, where it exists. If you hold something in your hand to view it, maybe thereís not so much of a range.

But I agree that I should have been more specific Ė the context of my statement was in response to another blanket statement about the photos from the D FA*50 that were linked by the OP. Making some of them from a phone camera would have involved a great deal of work in post (for a start, the average phone camera has a FoV equivalent to a 28mm FL), and even then they would probably have appeared less than convincing to someone whoís done such work themselves.

I have done some of that, though. The most recent was to take a phone photo of my late brother-in-law and doctor it to crop in closely and to blur the background, to be printed on the memorial card for his funeral. It did the job, for the size it was printed, but had it been on an A4-sized pamphet, rather than the 10x15cm card, it wouldnít have been so effective, not that many other people would have noticed from the armís-length vewiing distance.

So, I suppose the question remains from all this: are we making pictures or art, or both? Is all that creamy bokeh, the smooth transition areas, the colour and the microcontrast something worth having, or have we all wasted our money on buying all this gear? After all, what looks good to one person may not be as pleasing to another. Weíve all paid our money: should we just have waited until the phone camera software got to the stage where thatís all we needed? Maybe the response will only ever be a post facto rationalisation. Thank heavens my wife doesnít think so. :)

If you donít look closely, critically or long enough, anything can seem as good as a mobile phone photo, especially if you have no reference nearby at the time. If youíre only going to post to Snapchat or the like, this lens clearly isnít for you. Print anything to go on a wall at a good size, and youíll be able to see a difference, if you really look. Mind you, some mobile phone photos can be pretty good, but I wouldnít rely on one for every photo I take. Then again, I do know some people who think Beats headphones are the bees knees. Whatever...

Well, it looks good, if a little dominating on a Kp. I wonder what it looks like on a K-01?

It's a neat-looking little camera, but it's clear to me that they had a long, hard look at the GR during its development.

The Quiet Man should feature alongside that movie, too, even though I'm not a big fan of Marion Morrison, either.

Yes, I did. I don't know why there was a problem with this one, when I've done something similar in the past with no issues. Anyway, having the two together is good, thanks.

Well, no. Iíve seen the FA20-35ís hood, so I take your point. What the FA20ís hood lacks in length, it more than makes up in diameter.

For the record, thereís an image on the Forum lens reviews:

No worries. I can see why youíre taken with the K-1ii, though.

I was thinking about upgrading mine, but then the D FA*50/1.4 started to loom large. So many shiny things...:D

I think many of us have ignored what can be done with a 50mm lens, because weíve all got used to having the flexibility of a zoom covering that FL, but I suspect the sheer IQ of the forthcoming D FA50/1.4 will make some of us think again.

Nice work, too, BTW. :)

Not likely serious, surely. There'd be an enormous amount of work to change the perspective, not to mention the little details like the rub marks on the closing tabs etc. Nobody that familiar with Photoshop would give the suggestion much credence, but people do think up the strangest things, in these strange times.

I think the question is whether or not you had an original K-1.

I haven’t moved to a K-1ii, but I recall similar impressions when I first bought my K-1.

The original thin leather strap that came with at least the earlier Pentax film cameras was a lovely bit of work: strong, durable and discreet, with a padded rubber neck piece to distribute the weight. I had one that came with my then new SP-F, but which I never used until I mounted it on my K-3.

A few more interesting things about Friday the 13th; 13 Facts About Friday the 13th

So, with at least one every year, and a maximum of three, retailers are missing out on a few opportunities.

If nothing else, this little cross-cultural discussion has added to the monthly post count. :)

No and yes, in that order, although I must say that our first European settlers almost starved to death, too.

The US origin of the term is different to the rest of the world. Friday the thirteenth was considered to be an unlucky day, and was sometimes known as Unlucky Friday or Black Friday, here.

For the superstitious, having a black cat cross your path on Friday the 13th was something to be feared! :)

Just another sign of getting older, I imagine. Friday the 13th used to be Black Friday. Commerce seems to have redefined it.

It’s nearly a week since we had a Friday the Thirteenth, but no-one seems to have run a Black Friday sale.

Odd, but in the era of Fake News it shouldn’t be surprising.

On the bright side, of course, it means that there’ll be Black Friday sales after the launch of the D FA50/1.4. :)

This is why I hate ebay... FA* 80-200 "Good" condition

Someone with the right equipment and knowledge could score themselves a very good and useful lens at a reasonable price, with that one. I’ve never regretted buying my copy, which is in similar external condition, but optically much better of course, albeit from the Marketplace.

I’ve bought other lenses many times through eBay, but I’ve always been careful about who I’ve bought from, and had no problems with any of them.
