Is the Pentax K-5 a classic ?

My massive 20" Trinitron was pretty awesome. Well, everything about it except the massive part. I'd still be happily
using that monitor if it hadn't expired.

Astonishing how solid the K-1 price has been.

I think it's a clear indication of how underpriced the K-1 is considering what it offers. Heck, we've all known Pentax' cameras have
been very good value for a long time.

I fully expect the K-3ii successor to be priced higher than we've seen in years past for a APS-C flagship. And I definitely expect any
Pentax FF to be released at a much higher price. We've already seen one price hike for the K-1. It will be interesting to see if the K-1
even increases again before coming down in price.

New B&H catalog changes.

I always got the impression that the B&H catalog was not comprehensive, especially for smaller brands like Pentax. If I didn't know the interweb
existed, I might assume the FA77 was not available, at least not from B&H at the moment. A call to B&H would clear up the missing catalog

Alternatives to the Pentax M 28mm f2?

Where are you seeing the M28/3.5 for that much money? That's well above the the historical average reported on PF. There are several copies on ebay between $50-$100.

Confirming what the other's have said, if you don't need the speed both the K28/3.5 and M28/3.5 are fine lenses.

Strange color tone - is that due to coating or WB problem?

I see blue and brown. The brown is obviously the washed out black areas. No matter how long I study the image, I simply
can not see white and gold, though I do see how the blue areas could be interpreted as 'white' in a very shady scene. The image
is back lit, after all. And yet, the dress is confirmed to actually be blue and black. Curiously, I just showed the image to my wife
and asked her what colors she sees in the dress. "White and mustard." I'm still trying to see the white....

Vintage lens providers

Modern optics, modern coatings, vintage barrels, no AF required; that would be ideal for so many designs. I suppose Samyang, Irix
and other third parties making modern MF lenses potentially qualify, though I'd still be keen for an updated day SuperTak or K series
prime with modern optics and coatings.

For auto focus, the FA/DA Limited builds are about as near to perfection as I can imagine.

I have very few plastic barreled lenses in my collection. No matter how good the glass, no matter how expensive, they all feel,
very cheap and wanting in my hands.

Whoops, missed that bit.

Correction, the question is:

Which historic lens manufacturer would you like to see return to production making lenses with vintage build,
vintage optics, vintage coatings AND auto focus(*)?

* I think

---------- Post added 04-13-2017 at 01:34 PM ----------

That is my dream lens in a nutshell, physics be damned. You could even forego the modern optical design, though
modern coatings would be nice.

Come on, don't tell me it can't be done; science it!

I believe the OP is asking:

Which historic lens manufacturer would you like to see return with the production of modern lenses?

Or maybe not. Those don't sound like modern, (2017), specs.

So the question is; which historic lens manufacturer would you like to see return to production making lenses with vintage build,
vintage optics AND modern coatings(*)?

* I think

Pentax DSLRs getting too heavy?
Posted By tvdtvdtvd

No, but you did lead off with an argument that Nikon cameras are getting lighter. I think the verdict is still out on that,
(DPR says 640g with battery, IR says 720g with battery, Nikon says 640g, but doesn't specify with our without battery.
The battery weighs about 80g, so the IR weight seems very plausible. Curiously, the same discrepancy occurs with
the D7200.).

The D7500 is more comparable to the K-3 than the KS-1. If the K-3 is heavier than the D7200/D7500, (it is), I'm confident
that weight is not superfluous, (it's not). Thus my question of how to reduce the weight without sacrificing build quality,
all while keeping the same features.

You then offered a solution by suggesting Pentax offer an updated KS-1. Apples to grapes.

Sorry you missed the woot deal. I very nearly bought one, but I really have no desire for the KS-1, even at that
price. I was most keen on the FLU card, and so afterward found one on ebay for $50.

I wouldn't keep your fingers crossed for an updated KS-1. That camera was a one off, and all signs suggest Ricoh
will continue to focus on the higher end rather than the lower. If you really desire a KS-1, I'd suggest keeping your
eyes open for further deals like the one at woot.

Pentax DSLRs getting too heavy?

I'm quite keen on the robust build of my K-3. It's impressively compact compared to similar bodies offered by
Canon and Nikon. Would I welcome a lighter body? Sure, but NOT if that meant a compromise to build quality.
So, the $24,000 question for you, Trickortreat, is how do you propose a lighter camera without sacrificing build
quality? Your desire for a KS-1 replacement might be the answer to that, but then you're comparing a apples to

BTW, can we assume you missed the incredibly awesome KS-1 deal at woot! just two days ago?

My initial thought too, but strictly speaking they only previously eliminated the Pentax compact cameras.
The Ricoh branded products still remain, (WG, Theta, GR).

Ricoh to get out of camera business?

Wow, that is a punch to the sternum. Yes, it is a shrinking market but there's no denying that the K-3, K-1 and KP have turned heads and
non-Pentax shooters are discussing Pentax as a serious camera brand for the first time in well over a decade. I think it would be folly to
completely abandon all their hard work overnight. Ricoh were very wise to abandon compact camera production when they did. Question
now stands, what would be the most sensible position to continue to hold, should they desire? FF, APS-C, MF, Theta, GR?, (Q is a safe bet
for abandoned already).

This little snippet may be the silver lining in the announcement:
"The company plans to use spare capacity at compact-digital-camera factories in Vietnam and elsewhere to ramp up production of automotive products."
With any luck, the Pentax brand is not yet Doomed, and this announcement is simply a continuation away from compact cameras Ricoh abandoned
a few years ago.

A very good deal to be sure, all the more so because the bundle includes the FLU card. I'm very tempted myself.....
I just don't need another body and FLU card can be purchased separately. I keep telling myself I could resell
the camera and lens and keep the FLU card, but I already have a stack of gear to sell off.

However, if you can see legitimate need for this camera I say purchase without hesitation. It's a great deal.

For the battery, try a little little lime juice. Lemon juice is too acidic.

For the screen, try fabric softener; works ever time.

No memory card on a model that old, it had a zip drive. It plugs into the parallel port.

Little known secret; that's really an underwater camera. Try it!

That is one way to look at a problem, though it's akin to using a wrench as a hammer. Yes, the wrench has enough
mass to drive a nail and yes, the wrench could be more hammer-like if you modified it a bit. Or you could use the wrench
as a wrench and grab a hammer when need.

I guess I see Liveview as an aid when the viewfinder simply will not do, like shooting at an odd angle where you can't
align your eye through the viewfinder to take a shot. Otherwise, the viewfinder is superior in most all respects for accurate
composition. Could the viewfinder be better with more sophisticated overlays? Sure, and that will probably happen to
all OVF/EVF systems over time. But a laggy liveview image on an LCD screen will never be a superior hammer.

How many digital pictures have you ever taken?

I guess I'm on the conservative side of things. Going strictly by shutter count, I've taken between 15000 and 20000 digital images
since I bought my first digital camera in 2001. That's counting ALL images captured, including test fires and misfires, (plenty of those
working with flash triggers). I've logged about 7000 clicks on my K10D and another 5000 on my K3. I've easily shot another 5000
across all other digital cameras, including smartphone.

Perhaps I should shoot more? Perhaps it's because I've never, aside from once or twice, ever shot in burst mode?

Looking at the lens database, it's apparent the K, M and FA variants each have a unique lens design. I'm not familiar with
any of them, but would assume they each have their own character, despite the claim the K "was later replaced by M and FA versions."

Presumably this was at PhotoDays this past weekend in Brussels, (I can't find anything about 'Photo Imaging').

One would definitely expect better security at a venue like this. Hopefully security cameras caught the crime in
action. Were any other vendors involved? Can't help but think this was an inside job, (someone with approved
access to the facility after hours).
