How image quality compares between Pentax 645: FA 45-85 f/4.5 Vs. 55 f/2.8 & 75 f/2.8

The 45-85 is almost always on my camera. I sold the 55mm because it wasn't very sharp. The 75mm is my only other lens and it's very sharp and quick to focus. At some point I may sell the 55 and get the 150 for portraits.

They won't work with Profoto lights. So that's a no-go for me. And I just signed the petition. Hope it makes an impact.

Wow - saw a 645z over at the Fred Miranda sight that's in mint condition and going for 4500. If anyone in this forum is on the fence, this is a great price to get into medium format.

Here's the link:

If it doesn't work, go the the Fred Miranda site and then go to the Buy & Sell forum.

Portable Strobe Options for the Z. TTL?

I spoke with Profoto about offering TTL for the Pentax 645z, but they will only offer it if they get enough inquires from photographers to make it worth their while. If you own the Profoto B1, send them an email asking for TTL.

What is the difference between a Pentax 645z DNG file and the DNG+ file? I've been using the regular DNG file and they've been fine. Any advantages to the + file?

Pentax offers a free plugin that works with Lightroom. I've used it about 30 times now and have not experienced any issues shooting tethered. This is one alternative.

If you shoot product, landscape, still life, portrait or architectural photography, this is an excellent camera to get into medium format photography at a very reasonable price.

Unless you're shooting very aggressive movement, synch speed won't be much of an issue, especially for portraiture. You might consider just buying one Priolite that you can pull out and use as a main light when you need to absolutely freeze action, or if you're in a large city, rent the Profoto Pro-8 and take advantage of its action-freezing flash duration that it offers. Also, if you keep your Nikon, you can use the Profoto B1's in HSS for those times when you need to freeze action. I do hope that the plethora of new battery-powered lights coming out will offer HSS for the Pentax 645z

Go to ebay and look for similar gear on sale that you can follow and see if there's an average price they're selling for. Chances are you won't find an exact set that mimics yours that's up for sale. But, if you look at the pieces individually, you'll get a good idea of what people are paying.

I don't really mind this feature because anything on my card is always placed on a hard drive anyway. It's something I can live with.

Go with the camera body. You have plenty of lenses that will suit your purposes. And if you really want that lens, sell your other lenses and then buy the new zoom you're interested in.

645Z and Capture One

Why should Phase One help its competition thrive? That makes no sense from a business standpoint. Allowing Canon or some other DSLR brands to use its software is a way to make an extra profit without diminishing its bottom line. I like C1 and wish I could use it with my 645z, but I understand Phase One's position. Quite simply, Pentax needs to build its own version of Capture One for Pentax owners.

645z and High Speed Sync?

I asked Profoto if they could find a way to make the B1's work with the Pentax 645z in HSS. Below is their response. If you are interested in HSS with the Profoto B1's, please email them and let them know.

Hey Darryl,

Thanks for reaching out to us. There isnít a firmware fix that can be done to enable TTL and HSS for the Pentax 645z. A completely new TTL remote would have to be created using the pin structure and TTL codes from the 645z.

That being said Profoto is always looking to expand on it products that pros need to do their job. We make products based on the amount of demand we receive from the photographic world. I will make sure that your request for a Pentax Remote makes it to the product development team.

In the meantime you could always shoot with glass with leaf shutters as this is a huge advantage that medium format cameras have over 35mm dslrs. Iíve done some research and have found that people seem to be having tremendous success with the LS glass from Pentax.

I hope that helped answer your question. Let me know if you have any others.

Thank you for choosing Profoto.

I have sent several emails to Profoto about extending HSS on the B1 to the Pentax 645z, but they have given no indication that they are going to update this feature for the Pentax brand.

If you are going to carry a knife, which I don't recommend, unless you need one for camping - then you should train yourself so that you don't have it taken away and used on you. If you're certain that you need a knife, then get some training. There are Kali, Krav Maga and other classes in nearly every large city (see below link as an example of knife training).

I was once chased off in rural area of China by a group of desperate guys who saw my camera and tried to take it away. My only option then was to run, and luckily I was in great shape and clearly left them behind even with a backpack on (I think they gave up after three blocks). I took up training in Kali after that and now I have two 16" rattan sticks that fit in my backpack that I take to every foreign country I go to. I've used my trained skills to scare off nearly 10 men who tried to intimidate me into giving up my gear in India. I dropped two of them in less than 3 seconds and the others took off running. I'm a passive person, but I don't turn the other cheek. If someone tries to hit me, I don't reason with them. I stop them. If you're often in places that might compromise your safety, it's a good idea to have some training, or simply avoid sketchy areas.

Hopefully, Pentax will come out with a leaf shutter lens so that you don't have to rely on certain lights to utilize HSS. However, a leaf lens will like cost more that buying a Priolite. I do sense that there will be some cheaper lights coming out that will offer HSS to a variety of camera brands.

I bring shortened Kali sticks (about 16") with me in a backpack whenever I travel. Part of my training has to do with knife fighting. I wouldn't recommend a knife unless you've absolutely been trained how to use it in the course of a fight.
