I have never used it nor have the interest to use it, but I see the positive benefit of government allowing it as long as the issues it might cause are no worse than alcohol. The government will be able to tax it for revenue and that would presumably damage the criminal industry's flow of cash because the end users would probably much prefer a legal means of acquiring what they want.

USPS follies

Yep, I had worked at a UPS sorting facility in my earlier college years. There is quite a lot of human error potentially involved. Say, there are 10 large belts that are the final destinations. Each belt does one or more states with around 10 workers. If a package gets placed on the wrong belt, it has the potential of being sent to the wrong state. The workers need to catch it and walk it over to the correct belt.

Just for the final air container/trucks:
- The person loading it might have one or more containers to deal with.
- They have to know what zip codes go into each container (maybe 10 to 100 per container).
- They have to read the (small-ish) zip code on the packing label.
- They have to check all sides of the package for hazardous materials labels (management like to place fake stickers on packages to test it)
- They have to scan the label before placing the package into the container. Sometimes a package is accidentally scanned, but not placed into the container. The person has to remove that entry, or it will show up as being sent somewhere it isn't actually going.
- They have to do it usually withing a few seconds, but it really depends on volume. Some days, especially in the holiday season, it was absolutely crazy.
- This all usually happens around midnight to 3am. The place I worked at had from 50,000 to 200,000 packages a night.

I think most of the error comes from too much package volume or people who don't put enough effort into their job. Not sure how USPS works though.

If An FF Does Debut...

As others mentioned, with the advent of the D800, I personally see the extra reach argument not nearly as strong as it once was. Moving forward, it will probably get more extreme. Higher pixel density on APS-C probably won't hold up as well as FF (say, 36mp APS-C vs. 60mp FF of similar technology). APS-C does have physical benefits in convenience, so I don't think they meet the same needs or will ever completely go away as long as DSLRs exist.

Item for Sale
Pentax DA 14mm f2.8

Asking Price
365 (temporary price drop)

Item Location
Illinois (United States)

Item Description
Condition:
Missing lens hood filter door. Glass appears to be scratch free and I can't see any dust on the inside of the lens. Exterior casing is good condition with a few small nicks/scratches as expected for a used lens. Focus ring is as smooth with no variation in turning resistance. Aperture and auto-focus function as normal.

I'm selling my Pentax DA 14mm f2.8 lens. A nice wide lens for Pentax K-mount DSLRS. I'm switching to Nikon, so I need to sell off my lenses. This being my last Pentax lens. :( This lens deserves more praise than it usually receives. A nice lens I had good results from.

I'll double box the package and ship with insurance for the full amount. I usually use UPS, but if you prefer USPS, I'll do that instead.

Photos attached.

The FA* is long out of production. If anyone wants one, I have mine up for sale on here... :)

I'd ignore the Sigma too. :D Sigma's in-production trifecta of wide large aperture primes in that range are far from ideal from reviews I've seen. Sigma is getting comparable or better than the camera manufacturers, but on more expensive recent lenses like their 50mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, and 85mm f1.4 primes. I still have bad memories of their "crackle" textured paint finish.

An oddly written article. His entire reason was the lack of a 23-24mm lens (equiv. 35mm)? Kind of hard to believe...

I do agree with him that finding some focal lengths was a pita with Pentax, but in my case I wasn't too fond of 24mm on APS-C after getting a hold of the FA* 24mm f2. There are options available, it just takes more effort to find some.

Why am I selling? I'm moving to Nikon for FF. Half way there, but I need to fully liquidate my Pentax gear. Tried local consignment, but it was taking too long.

$410 = Pentax 10-17mm f3.5-5.6 Fisheye

- Includes: lens hood (MISSING FILTER DOOR), S100-120 bag, front cap, end cap
http://scottjwaldron.com/img/s4/v63/p1279137416-4.jpg

$610 = Pentax FA* 24mm f2
- Bought from someone on here, decent condition
- Silver exterior paint in very good, almost new looking, condition (see photos), lens hood when attached has a tiny bit of play (the plastic railing of the hood probably isn't as tight as it might have once been in the past, though I have no frame of reference to say if it is like it would have been originally or not)
- focus ring and clutch isn't totally smooth, but alright and functional.
- I had Eric of Pentaxs (Webpage) refurbish the lens (cleaned the glass, improved the clutch/focus ring) so it is as close to as good as it can get considering the age. I've probably put $850+ into this lens. :(
- Includes: lens hood, S80-120 bag, front cap, end cap

SOLD
$1075 = Pentax FA* 85mm f1.4
- Sad to sell this lens.... so amazing.
- Bought used from KEH
- Exterior silver paint is in average condition, some scuffs/scratches and such.
- Focus ring and clutch are great, smooth ring and nice action to the clutch.
- Glass in nice condition. Aperture in nice condition.
- Includes: front cap, end cap (NO HOOD, NO OEM BAG)
http://scottjwaldron.com/img/s1/v56/p1279137630-4.jpg

How I ship lenses:
- I double box with packing paper and/or other materials to fill the empty spaces.
- Lens hoods will be packed separate from the lens (I've had issues where the shipper has sent a lens to me with the hood connected in the past)
- lens caps will stay on the lens and the lens will be in the lens case (if the lens has a case, the 85mm does not, so I'll use extra padding in that case)
- I'll buy a pack of ziplock bags so there is a water barrier for each lens shipped.
- I ship through UPS with insurance for the total prices listed here.

All lenses fully functional. By good I mean it might have light scuffs or nicks in the casing. See photos for details.

"Preliminary" K-5IIs Review.

It's nice to see the K-5 IIs will most likely be successful in some areas such as resolition. However, it can't of course achieve things related to the physical size of sensors.

I handled a K-5 IIs at a camera shop today. It does seem to have smarter auto-focus. I tried AF with macro focusing on the 100mm f2.8 WR in indoor store lighting conditions and it felt a bit better than a K-5 would have. It did still hunt though.

How detailed did you get with testing? Same exact settings and lens of the same scene?

Try turning off SR on the K-01 and see if that makes a difference.

I did notice that 60fps was lesser quality than 30fps on the K-01, but of course, the K-5 doesn't even do that.

I don't have a K-01 anymore, but from memory:
Switch the video mode function of the AF/AE-L button to AE-L (the default is AF I believe). That means once you press the video record button you can press AE-L to lock exposure and prevent the aperture from changing.

When I had that setup, the DA 50-200mm lens focused slow compared to others along with the 100mm macro lens.

DA 50-200mm (slow)
D-FA 100mm f2.8 WR (slow)
FA* 85mm (fast enough, used that combo a lot)
FA 31mm (fast enough, used quite often)
FA* 24mm (fast enough, used quite often)
10-17mm fisheye (fast enough, used occasionally)
14mm f2.8 (fast enough, used occasionally)

Great samples!

I'm in the process of (probably) getting a D600/D7000 combo, but I have to sell everything first. One thing I did notice was that my subscriber count on my Youtube has started dropping like mad since I talked about switching. :( Guess some Pentaxians are a little too focused on brand to look past that.

It's great to see that Fuji actually puts the time in to improving their existing products like that. It shows they have some pride in their work and want to please their new customer base.

I wouldn't say they totally missed the mark with the K-01. It has the potential and is generally a decent camera from my experience with it (no discernible difference in results compared to the K-5), but they didn't invest enough into it and they only halfheartedly targeted the camera for video use where I think they should have gone all of the way.

The design gimmick was a failure to many current Pentax users and other serious photographers/videographers. The biggest problem I have with Marc's design in practice is that it is form over function... Well, and the "stop light" buttons and other aspects are not needed and make the camera appear unprofessional.

They had the right bones to make an amazing interchangeable lens video camera that takes great photos and can use millions of K-mount/M42 lenses. It was lacking important tweaks and features that would have made it the next cult enthusiast video camera. Many of the tweaks are in software, but there were some hardware aspects like an articulating screen that would have given the camera a true purpose.

Had the camera cost an extra few hundred and had:
- K-5 like design and function with dedicated buttons and potentially WR.
- Improvements like peaking while video is being recorded, hdmi that outputs video/liveview/uncompressed video, mic levels shown while recording, high bit rate encoding option, video record button that isn't stuck in P mode, and others that target the video usage...
- A viewfinder to appease people who wanted that. I think an optional EVF would have been a decent compromise.
- Basic articulation of the screen, similar to their new X-5.

:)

I wouldn't say they did a great job on technical execution of things like AF (x100, x-pro) and manual focus on the X-Pro1, but Fuji certainly made visually appealing tools that have had a lot of interest. It goes to show with a product that has the right level of appeal, you don't need a current market to be successful.

I agree there.

Also, What is their stance on revisionary software/firmware improvements to existing cameras to improve functionality? Basically, it would be customer support and commitment to make the best photographic tools.

Examples:

- K-01, no peaking while video is being recorded.
- K-01, HDMI is only good for photo review and not live view or movie recording.
- K-01, no indicator while recording for audio levels (this would tell the user audio is working and being recorded)
- K-01, the movie record button forces the use of Program mode instead of whatever movie mode I have selected in the options menu.
- K-01, shake reduction in video mode seems to add a more jello-ish look to the video than without.
- K-01, RAW speed seems artificially limited to 1fps.

- K-7/K-5/K-5II (most likely), lacking in advanced video control and the MJPEG/PCM codec has issues with all software and websites like Youtube that use FFMPEG decoding (popping noise in video).

- New K-5II presumably lacks features of lesser models like the K-30 and K-01.

- The old tethering request.

- The Q10 is said to have improved AF algorithms, will that be back-ported to the original Q?

The "consumerization" of full frame cameras

It is nice to use one set of lenses. However, a lot of the debating in the original was talking about APS-C only lenses, which would be poor or more likely unusable on film cameras. To span things like that, FF capable lenses are needed. (which I intended to do with Pentax based on the lenses I bought and kept for a long time, and now with what I decide to use in the future). I agree with you there that having one set of lenses for as many camera styles as possible is ideal.

I have a silver FA 28-80 and it is a bit longer than the DA 18-55.

Yep, that's one of the larger benefits with Pentax. Just be mindful of lenses that are not actually from Pentax. Ricoh lenses especially. They have a non-standard pin that can get caught on new DSLRs.

I assume the K1000 is a bayonet mount, but if it isn't there is an adapter for M42 screwmount lenses that goes for around $35.

Pentax K-5 vs. K-30 Purchase

I'd say K-30. Peaking as Ash mentioned is a great feature, but also full manual control in video and a decent video codec that is a lot more compatible than the K-5's.
