Battery door of the *flash* - does not hold securely; a small piece of plastic has chipped off along the door railings so it will shut but is inclined to pop open.

Immaterial; this kit is now SOLD.

Selling off my Pentax K-5iis dSLR kit.

Nothing wrong with it, just feel like exploring that Fuji mirrorless some more...

Includes:

Pentax K5iis APS-C dSLR -
Pentax LTD 15mm f4
Pentax LTD 21mm f3.2

AUD$1000 the lot, $1050 if you want the flash too, functions perfectly, you'll just need some gaffer tape to keep the battery door closed. All plus shipping of course.

Yes, that's right - TWO limiteds and a near mint K-5iis for a grand (ish). All in great nick.

Buy this weekend and I'll throw in a large Tenba bag worth $200 itself.

This is a bargain, no other way to put it.

PM me.

Which film SLR - MZ-50, MZ-S or LX?

SR never existed before a few years ago, and i've never needed it - always had steady hands or a tripod available for when that matters.

OVF = meh? Many of the best photogs ever dealt with parallax using rangefinders. who cares? Reflex viewing is completely irrelevant in the digital age. You have a rear LCD - who cares if you view through the lens? I'd *rather* the gains in size/silence from not having a mirror/mirror box. I really enjoyed shooting with a PEN EP-2 for a year before being fed up with the small sensor/poor noise performance.

Just imagine a cam in that form factor with a FF sensor (and hence beautiful low light/high ISO peformance) and Pentax-compact optics... + weather-sealing and you have the *actual* digital Leica. i.e. it would be better than the M9. *drools*

"there is no way I would go back to using stone age cameras."

Not only is *my* best photography consistently better on film cameras, I would challenge ANY digital photographer to shoot the same subject, them using digital, and me using film *with the exception of sports only*, where the automation is really useful - although sports shooters covered plenty well before the invention of the motor drive...) - and I will produce a picture to equal or rival anything captured RAW.

for sharpness, colour etc - I will match any digital image in everything except sheer grain (but that's an aesthetic choice and often enhances a picture anyway).

it's ALL about technique. run and stun is for kids.

"How about sharp wide open DA14/2,8"

wellll.... for one, i've heard it isn't, otherwise i would've bought one.

also, the 15mm flat out kills it for portability (size, weight, compactness/built in hood), and IS sharp at f4. i just wish i had that extra stop...

I love my DA 15mm f4.

The only way it could be improved is if it were a sharp-wide-open 16mm f2.8... (ARE YOU LISTENING, PENTAX?)

Tamron 17-50 F2.8 vs DA*16-50

Bypassed both of these options and went for the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4.

Couple of reasons:

1) owned one before for C*non, was a great little lens and

2) and this is key --- is both FF and a usable range for shooting bands from up close, so I can use it with both the K5 and my newly-acquired MZ-s.

I previously owned a DA 16-50; loved everything about it except the size, weight, cost and low-light performance. I decided the trade off of 1-2 stops at the 'long' end is no biggie to be able to use it as a superwide on the MZ-s, and it's plenty sharp enough for critical work, plus I won't worry about beating it up a little, as it's easy enough to replace. No chance of SDM failure, either...

Essentially, I *hate* zooms, and would always shoot a prime over a zoom where I have that option, but I just started in a job where I am going to have to cover some events (- group shots of people indoors with flash = need a wide zoom for versatility/varying group sizes).

I also realised I only ever shoot digital for work/paid jobs, and absolutely never touch it for 'enjoyment shooting' (mostly travel) where I always, always prefer film, full stop end of.

I just received my MZ-s and I am in *love*!

It is the first SLR - of any kind, film or digital - that, in terms of handling, has made me question my unholy devotion to my beloved OM4Tis. Tiny, powerful, has everything you need, nothing you don't.

Why can't they make a pro-dSLR this size? I find it hard to believe that 'processing/CPUs/rear screen etc' takes up more room than all the physical stuff that's *missing* from dSLRs (film rails, film transport motors, pressure plate) etc.

The MZ-s has all this and manages to be smaller, lighter and ergonomically superior to my K5. If some manufacturer just had the cojones to make a review screen optional - with that change ALONE how much real estate could be saved? who needs chimping if you have to throw it up on a screen later anyway?

I want my SLRs *portable*. As in 'go everywhere' portable = light, small. My K5 comes with me in the smallest, most discreet bag I've ever used, but it's still weightier than an OM4+lens or this gorgeous piece of engineering (MZ-s)

i couldn't care less about what the results say 'on paper' - the 31mm LTD is an experiential thing; it's how it feels in your hands as much as its 'look'.

i'm spoiled. i grew up with film cams in an era of all-metal construction. i expect and want that handling. so the price point is relative to that, to how it meets my needs in terms of what i want from the experience of photography. if you don't enjoy the process, the products don't mean jack.

yep. when shooting film, i often just pack a minolta TC-1 or a Ricoh GR-1s. the ultimate in silence/discretion and super high quality lens.

hey, it's just my opinion. i see technical applications, but rarely artistic, for FLs <18mm (35equiv). proper UWAs didn't even exist when HCB, Erwitt et all were shooting their best.

and i wasn't comparing human vision to a photograph, rather drawing an analogy between the 'purpose' of photography - to document or draw how we see the world - and sight. they are the same in purpose. one is to feed perceptual data to our brain to drive decisions about our survival and interaction with the environment, the other merely provides a crude - but if we're fortunate occasionally beautiful or emotionally moving - physical representation thereof.

"the 'soft edges' we decry in a lens doesn't even exist in our own vision!"

sorry, phrased this poorly - meant to say: the sharp edges we *crave* in our lenses do not even exist in our own vision.

Curious. I know several professional photographers who whip out the ultrawide for corporate portraits occasionally; even weddings. so many of those annual report type photos are so inherently boring that a UW is often used to add 'instant interest'.

I guess everything goes in trends - these days it's 'bokehmania' (oh how i laugh).

and paperbag - this is bollocks; we see much wider than the 'normal' view attributed to the 43mm-50mm range, there is just very strong central focus in human vision. the 'soft edges' we decry in a lens doesn't even exist in our own vision!

everyone is different; i *see the world* most comfortably in the 21-28mm (35mm equiv) focal range, so that's where i tend to shoot, whether APS-C or FF.

maybe that's why i don't find the crazy ultra-wides difficult or challenging to use. I've never been frightened about getting close to my subject. i've had a 24mm literally swatted off my camera - smashed to pieces - by a guitar headstock. i haven't owned a fisheye (or rectilinear UW wider than 21mm equiv) in years because the novelty soon wears off.

Picture editors and amateurs seem to love them, but then if every shot has a 'dramatic perspective', none really do, right?

"When you work with ultrawides you need to be a lot more conscious about empty spaces"

well, i try to avoid photos of nothing all the time anyway...

the wider you go, the more perspective distortion there is. 15mm is at the limit of 'can nearly make it look normal'. anything wider and i'd jump straight to fisheye.

the wider you go, the less of a photographer you have to be. ultrawide territory becomes 'instant composition' because any viewpoint is an exaggeration of 'reality'.

i love the DA15 because it's as close as I could get in Pentax mount to my all time fave FL, 21mm.

i've never shot one of those starburst JHD is railing against; you can do that with a $15 filter. why spend $600 on a lens to create a cheap and dated effect? i think the salient point is that the lens is HIGHLY resistant to flare, which is useful for anyone.

it's the focal length that means you don't have to stand back when the scene gets crowded, but will always rewards you taking a step closer. i adore mine. maybe the only Ltd i will never part with, although the 31 is dominating time on my K5 these days...

Didn't come with one. I have no idea how old it is - you could try mailing DanielT? Friendly forum member. Would certainly disclose. SDM has worked flawlessly for me on the few occasions I took it out.

I prefer to focus manually, anyway.

Item for Sale
Pentax DA* 16-50 f2.8 zoom - $650AUD

Asking Price
650 AUD

Item Location
Melbourne, Australia

Item Description
Up for sale is this Pentax DA* 16-50 f2.8 zoom.

I have only had it one week! The few pics I took were sharp, contrasty and lovely.

Forum member DanielT74 owned it prior to me, and can probably tell you more about it. Is optically and cosmetically perfect, zero issues.

Check the record and you will see I am selling for EXACTLY the same asking price; I am not a profiteer. Local buyer (Melbourne) can collect and save on postage.

Functions perfectly, NO SDM ISSUES - not for DanielT, not for me. Does not come with hood/box etc, as I did not receive these items when I purchased them.

The only reason I am selling this lens, is because I tried it out on a paid job (low-light, live music) and found myself preferring the manual focussed shots I got with the 31 LTD/primes in general. Some habits are hard to break.

Call it un unsuccessful (for ME) experiment with "checking to see if i can still incorporate zooms into my work". Turns out, no. Prefer primes.

Pics to come later tonight.

Long enough for me - I just won an MZ-s with grip for a fair price on the evilbay! Did not think any film SLR would appeal enough ever to supplant my OM4Ti, but I am gonna give this one a trial with a couple of FA Limiteds and see what happens.

i anticipate *love*. : )

I did several trips while working for Lonely Planet with just a wideangle and a short tele - often a 28 f2 and 85 f2.

all that i ever needed.

these days, i think i will be fine with the DA15, FA31 and FA77. *maybe* I would swap that FA77 for a DA 100 macro WR, just for versatility?
