What is "Refurbished" in truth? (K10D from Best Buy)

I bought a top-of-the line refurbished video camera from a Sony store years ago. Got it home and all the images had a red tone. Couldn't get it out. Took it back and was told refurbished cameras could not be returned. I argued and pled (it was a big expense for me at that time) and finally the store manager agreed to take it back and refund my money, but told me never to set foot in the store again. The store was out of business a short time later.

SanDisk Exteme III cards OK for K20D?

Amazon is selling the SanDisk 4GB class 6 SDHC memory card for $30 and $5.95 shipping. Amazon further IDs the card with these numbers: SDSDRX3-4096-A21. They also have the 4 GB SanDisk Extreme III SDHC card with the ID of SDSDX3-4096 for $20 plus shipping. Are these cards compatible with the K20D? And what is the difference between the two? Thank you!

I agree. Lots of really excellent images, but the contest was about -- as you point out -- a picture of something with another framed pictured contained within. There were many misses for fulfilling this criteria.

Poll: who keeps their strap on the camera?

This tale goes way, way back -- about the mid-50s. I had my Rolleiflex F:2.8 twin lens reflex on a tripod, setting on a sidewalk. When I went to remove the camera, it slipped from my hands and fell four feet to the cement. It bounced once and lay quiet. It suffered a dent in one corner of the metal trim, but still worked perfectly. As a result of that near disaster, when removing a camera from a tripod I now first slip the strap over my head. And, when I lay a camera on a table or bench, I make sure the strap does not loop over the edge.

If you want both the moon and a city night scene in one picture, you can do it by shooting two images, one exposed for the moon, the second exposed for the buildings. Then copy and paste the moon into the buildings picture, over the image of the over exposed moon.

Well, now that I know better, it probably won't work again! Thanks for your comments. An answer to one question -- I use the Pentax RAW program that came with the K20D. And, I really don't know what I could have done "right" or "wrong" -- I just punch the buttons.

I've just tried this for the first time. I saved a RAW image to .tif, and then saved that to .jpg. This resulting .jpg image had considerably more edge sharpness than a ,jpg image made directly from the same RAW image, and the overall picture had more detail. Anybody else tried this, or does everybody do it, and I've been behind the curve? (Or is it a nutty idea?) Anyway, I tried it again with a macro RAW image and got the same result. (The comparisons were made from a portion of the RAW image blown up to 200% on the screen -- but the difference was noticeable with the full images at normal screen viewing size.) Happy New Year!

I notice that the one rating vote (so far) was "bad." I really would like the voter to expand on this opinion, and tell me what makes this picture "bad." Thank you (Sincerely,)

DRE in K20

I appreciate the explanations. My thinking was headed in the right direction -- there are times to use DRE, and times it won't be of much help -- but your explanations made it clearer for me when those times are. This is an excellent forum, with great people!

DRE in K20

I used the Dynamic Range Expansion feature of my K20 (as described on page 79 of the manual) and was greatly disappointed. I took two pictures -- one with the feature turned on, and one with it off -- of my neighbor’s house across the street, which is gray brick, with a white garage door. All that happened was the image taken with DRE on had less contrast -- I duplicated that image by reducing the contrast of the “DRE off” shot one click in the Quick Color Tuning program of PhotoImpact. So, what’s the advantage of this “feature?”

Each year at Greeley Stampede time residents of Greeley, Colorado "reserve" a position along 10th Ave. from which to view the parade by covering an area with a tarp, or roping it off. This begins as much a five days before the July 4 parade.

Old Dudes, eh? Well, here's one: When taking photos augmented by flash, be sure to stay an arms length from the powder, as it could cause burns.

Two K20D focus question
Posted By Tom Lee
Replies: 5

Thank you for the reply. But dumb me needs some claification.

You say the ID is obtained electronically via the lens chip -- does this mean then that the adjustment of whatever lens is mounted at the time of adjustment will be retained, and applied each time said lens is affixed to the body?

I assume this is what happens, but just need to make certain, as there is no indication in the menu of this. Also, the menu line, "Input Focal Length" is grayed out, and I thought that might have something to do with it, but I guess not, as you might need to adjust different lenses of the same focal length.

Also, do you know what the increments are on the adjustment screen? They go from 1-10,. but 1-10 what? Inches, centimeters?

Sorry to come back to you with all this, but just wanted to be sure I understand it all. Thank you very much for your replies.

Tom

Two K20D focus question

Two K20D focus questions:

1. On page 106 of the manual there are directions on how to make auto focus adjustments for different lenses. Step #3 relates how to make the changes apply to one lens or to all lenses. In the “Apply One” box it is stated: “The lens ID is displayed when obtained.” Question – how is it obtained? (Under Rec Mode, "Input Focal Length" is not active.)

2. In the camera Custom Menu screens, #34 is labeled “Catch-in Focus.” Clicking the four-way controller allows it to be “enabled” or “disabled.” Question – what is “Catch-in Focus”? --Thanks!

Why it was essential for K7 to have Video

I can't imagine there ever coming a time when a professional wedding phtographer (meaning someone earning his living shooting weddings) will ever use a combination still/video camera. What would be the point? One cannot stop shooting video to take a still. Shooting video of a wedding, professionally, requires a minimum of two video cameras, one in hand and one on a tripod, and two microphones, the sound from which needs to be continuously monitored. Both Video and still shooting require the full and constant attention of the photographer if he/she is to fulfill the unique requirements of each. One person cannot do both.
