K-3 with the Sigma 500mm F/4.5. Color moire formed on the bird feathers but Topaz Denoise is good a cleaning it up with the clean color slider.

I like chasing butterflies with my lenses also. I thought the female black swallowtails had the greater amount of blue dots on the hindwings.

I almost exclusively shoot in AF.A or AF.C. Red or white squares are possible in either mode with my K-3. What I should say is Iíve had problems with autofocus with the Sigma 500mm F/4.5 ďwhenĒ Iíve used white squares. After testing both sets of squares indoors, my suspicions were confirmed. Please just take my finding and test it yourself.

Okay, I just photographed examples of what I'm referring to. It really is simple. I just don't use the autofocus mode when white squares are shown on the screen here.

Iíve experimented with different combinations of autofocus points. I donít think anyone who has seen my work would say that have a tough time with focusing.

Itís not what you see when looking through the viewfinder. What Iím referring to is on the big view screen on the camera. On the side of the K-3 there is a button called AF MODE. Press that button when a lens is attached to the camera and use a dial to select the amount of AF points. With the red squares you can select 1,9,25, or 27 of them. I found out through testing that the autofocus mode with white squares donít work well with my 500mm F/4.5 lens. I suspect it eliminates part of the functionality of the system. I couldnít find an explanation for it in the user manual.

Iím not a big fan of any particular brand anymore. Iím just think some of these brand fans are irrational but that is what being a fan is about I suppose.
Iíll take your word for that and it is to bad. There was a time when (if memory serves me correctly), Pentax had the best product support rated by JD Power.

I use a K-3 for wildlife. The main problem I had with autofocus is using the white squares found in autofocus modes. I shoot using the red squares only. These are the squares representing autofocus points. Hope this helps someone.

I reduce the sizes of my images typically by more than 50% before I post them on flickr. This one was full of details. I believe F/6.3 is where the Sigma 500mm F/4.5 is at its strongest with the K-3. Higher than that I think the combo starts to run into diffraction.

One reason one switched to Sony is because of their 400mm F/2.8 flourite lens. It's a beauty but I would cost me.

Sounds like your analysis is believable. Canon has had enough time to work on their 7D and the 100-400. I didn't like the first versions of either of them. Sony has come along. If you ask me, I've spoken to a few people who have switched from Canon to Nikon or Sony. None of them regretted that decision. As for ISO 2000, that isn't a good enough reason for me to switch as I rarely use those high numbers. I don't need it. Any Canonite who is photographing birds who says "they have no noise at ISO 3200" is just a fanatic because we are always cropping when shooting birds.

Just so everyone knows what I found out and I never learned if from someone else,... use the red autofocus boxes with the K-3. I've used the white autofocus boxes and I've had much less success rate with my telephoto lens.

All of these photos were taken with pentax DSLRs. Andrew Richardson | Flickr Some advice with a K-3..... don't use white autofocus boxes. Use red boxes only in the autofocus mode.

The K-3 next to the Nikon D4 or D5 and I'm blown away if the guy behind it is good.

One of my flickr buddies had this to say and I quote, "I have seen people with the best equipment money can buy and they couldn't photograph a stuffed bird in a nature center and on the other hand I have seen people with entry level equipment and photograph circles around other people that have better equipment. As the saying goes, it's the Indian not the arrow."

K70 as a K5 upgrade?

There are some interesting replies here. I have a K-5ii and a K-3. I'd rather use the K-5ii in low light situations with ISO 2000 or more. I should test this again because I've learned how to reduce the noise out of my images better than I used to. I just purchased a used K-5iis for landscapes and more. I will keep using the K-3 for birds and some macro. I do occasionally get color moire in bird feathers but because of the greater amount of pixels, it is hard to see because of the smaller sized pixels but I can clean it out with the clean color slider in topaz denoise. I wouldn't try to photograph birds with my 5iis because of possible color moire.

Something else, the noise of the K-3 is smaller and images have a finer noise grain in size compared to the K-5. I find it easy to get rid of it when I reduce my images a certain way in photoshop elements.

16-50mm vignetting

It's not a FF lens. I have a copy. It's a great lens. I don't care what anyone says about it. The 15-30mm F/2.8 shouldn't have any noticeable vignetting. If I had a K-1 I would buy that lens.

Yeah, the D4 is an autofocus monster with a buffer from here to the moon. I've seen what some guys can do with those. I've been told the only problem with it is cropping photos. We were photographing birds that day. I personally don't want to spend $6,000 just on a body.

I to have felt the pressure to go to Nikon. If I lived on the west coast as you do, I would buy a K-1 and the 15-30mm and more primes and travel that coast.

All these years later I was just wondering about this guy. Just found out he committed suicide recently. Someone blamed part of the reason on haters on YouTube. There is no good reason to commit suicide. Find your purpose in life.

I agree a K-3 replacement is what is needed the most. I would be interested if a 560mm F/4 came out with a 1.4x teleconverter designed for that lens. That would make it a 800mm F/5.6.

Have you played with your cameras autofocus fine-tune? It is probably the lens but maybe setting it at one extreme or another can make it better.
