The P645 200s: thoughts and experiences?

Photos were taken under different lighting conditions. Pink tint was from tungsten light. I did not adjust WB; I was only comparing sharpness. Color rendition of the Pentax lenses is consistently good.

The P645 200s: thoughts and experiences?

I'm glad you're happy with the lens. As you know, I wrote a very favorable review some time ago after comparing the zoom to primes at 150, 200 and 300. I wrote the review in part in response to a terrible, and not explainable, review of the lens left by a very disgruntled poster.
I own all the lenses mentioned in this thread and the concern over the coronavirus has resulted in a lot of free time. So I tested: the 150-300mm zoom at 200mm; the Pentax A 200mm; the Pentax FA 200mm; the Pentax 67 200mm and the Fuji G 100-200 at 200mm. All at f/11; lighting conditions varied and I did not adjust WB. All were processed in ACR with default sharpening. I did not adjust for any CA; however, the Fuji corrections for the G lens are baked into the file. The crop is of an isopropanol bottle that happened to be on a desk (not virus related but a certain irony). The text on the label gives a good illustration of sharpness and contrast. My overall conclusion: there is little to choose between these lenses. The A is the weakest and FA and Fuji the best, but the differences are so slight as to be almost meaningless for real applications. An interesting effect that I don't understand: the Fuji and FA files show some sort of chromatic aliasing or aberration in the text that is absent in the files from the other lenses. All the text should be black, but the two mentioned lenses render some of the text red or blue. Each image of the bottle is about 600 pixels (native) in width and so represents about 2 inches at 300ppi on a print of 28 inches if all 8300 pixels in the file were used. Fuji GFX 50r was used for all images, using EFSC. I put them in the album linked below.

Thank you Stephen. It's not always deary (in fact, I getting a bit tired of the sun lately). You should come visit more often. FYI, The London Times just dubbed Buffalo :America's Coolest Summer City", and they are not referring to the temperature.

I have been using Pentax cameras since I acquired a Spotmatic in 1973 and at some point have used nearly all the MF bodies. I currently live along the shore of Lake Ere and my photos often involve the lake. I belong to a local arts organization that has an annual "Studio Tour". Typically I sell prints during this event, this year I had a book available of photographs taken within a 2-mile radius of Dunkirk, NY, a lakeside community. The photos span over a decade and were taken either with a Pentax 67, 67II, 645, 645N, 645D or 645Z. So I thought this might be of interest to the forum members. If you follow the link and then click "read now", you can see every image.

This just happened with my K-1. First I tried turning off SR and then a firmware update. Then I did a search. I use the 4-way to switch from single exposure to timer quite frequently; somehow I manged to set it for multi exposure :)

Standard 95mm filters fit fine, I have also used a 100mm filter with a 95-100mm step up ring. I haven't used any of the square filters with a holder on this lens, I have simply held a ND filter in front of the lens for the duration of the exposure (not very often) and had no problems.

I had the first gen 55mm (in fact I still have a 100mm bayonet filter for it); I still have the 3rd gen 55mm and the 55-100mm zoom, both of which are sharper than the old 55.

Tall ship on Lake Erie. It was participating in events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie. Distortion caused by the long distance involved gives a ghostly impression.

I highly recommend you consider the FA 150-300mm. It's light, fairly compact and allows perfect framing between 150 and 300mm. The lens hasn't gotten great reviews here (one of which is silly bad), but my copy is excellent. I have the 645 150mm A and FA, the 200mm FA and the 67 30mm M*; whatever the zoom loses to the primes is made up by its framing ability. You need not take my word alone, in a recent interview with Charles Cramer on LuLa, he indicates he loves the lens. Enjoy your trip.

the 25mm lens

I love the 645Z but the lack of a really wide lens is a serious shortcoming; the 28-45mm is not wide enough for some of my uses and its cost, weight and size are real liabilities.
Additionally, I wonder how is it that Fuji can supply a 23mm at half the price of the discontinued Pentax 25mm?
I don't know the answer to Ed's question, but I noted that the D FA 25mm was listed at 1070g (Ricoh) and the DA 25mm is listed at 1040g (B&H). If the only difference in the lenses is a bigger hood and baffling for the DA version,it should be heavier, not lighter, than the D FA.

67 vs 645 digital

I did some comparisons when I bought a 645D in 2010. My conclusion then was the the D and 67
were about equal in detail. Link below is a comparison of the Pentax 645N, Pentax 67 and 645D. Provia film scanned on a Nikon 9000; 645 35mm A lens on the 645N and 645D; 45mm on the 67.
I like the color of the D slightly better than the Z and resolution is not that different, but if high ISO, DR and live view are important, then the Z is the better choice

tom's: 645N, 645D, 67II

Below is a link to a series which compares color from the 645Z, 645D and Sigma DP2:

I used one with my 645D, it works fine for critical focus and easily flips up to see the whole scene. I have a 645Z so I use live view now. If you are interested in mine, send a PM.

My thoughts exactly about the 400 and 150-300mm zoom, both sharp, light and easy to handhold. The 600 is a great lens, but so susceptible to vibration that its use requires considerable care; it's also so heavy that I find myself using it only when the 400 simply is not long enough.

Here are a few using the 600mm:

Below is about close focus limit. Flowers about 3 in/8cm in diameter; not sure of the distance. Wide open BTW

---------- Post added 02-07-2017 at 03:46 PM ----------

Almost no CA anywhere; the lens is highly corrected with 12 elements.
Works well with the 1.4x; sold my 2x.
I don't use this handheld very often and even then rest the barrel on something. I use the 400mm handheld frequently, but not the 600. Keep in mind this is a MF lens, so the hand needed to turn the focus ring also must support the lens barrel. My experience is that is very difficult to achieve the quality this lens is capable of using it handheld.
Also, shutter shake is a real issue at slower shutter speeds.
