I *think* this is a Red-Shouldered Hawk. Our small cul-de-sac sees a lot of raptor action.

Thank you, everyone!!

Since you asked lol...

This is another from the same set. Same bouquet, opposite angle, cranked ISO up to 12800. A little heavier on the saturation in processing.
I love this lens.

Just got some gear for my birthday. Part of which was the D-FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro. As a newb, of course i had to give it a spin. Below are the first results. The closer images were cropped to that from original pic.

Thx, all!!

Here are some crops based on the feedback.
First two are of pic 1. One is @ 8x10 (4/5) other is 16:9 per suggestions.
Second is pic 5 in both ratios

Also, for fun/Mike suggestion #4 with added vignette (likely too much lol)

For #1 & #5 - A/B?

Normally I'd post only one, but as 5 are allowed i'm seeking some advise....

framing/crop: pic 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4.

overall: edit/crop/whatever else

These were shot @105mm with various settings (see exif). I'm personally leaning towards #5 as fav, but i'm all over the place. I will say this... was first time really using that lens. It's pretty crisp at f/7.1-f/8. Thx in advance!

I echo this. It's personal taste, but my brain seems to center on the yellow first and that's where the individuality comes in. I'd center on the person vs average of the person+reflection for example. That aside, I like the shot and jealous of the location access :)

This one and another are basically unphased by human presence (separate thread incoming. so much for the "once in a lifetime" thing lol). I think they were hoping we'd leave the dogs (mini-dachshund) outside unattended.

Thx! It was perched on a branch next to the steps going into my house. I noticed it just walking normal path. I'd feel same way if it was chillin out in its home.

This guy came and allowed me to get fairly close without moving... about 20' away or so. I should have closed the aperture down a little bit, but got lost in the moment b/c i thought he was going to fly away any second.

We're probably going to use our dining room table. The dining room gets a ridiculous amount of natural light (where the rest of the house is starved), so the lighting will definitely be an augment vs sole. I'm a big "fix it in post" guy. Before I got into digital photography again, i spent about a decade helping folk editing film mostly doing color correcting & grading.

It'd be an off-camera flash to the side/up to the side, never direct. For now i'll probably get the continuous and augment with a godox v1 down the road.

Awesome idea and wouldn't have thought of that, but honestly, pretty brilliant work-around. Could even go a step further and use them behind one of the umbrellas/softboxes from the CFL lights where needed. At ~$12 USD i could get a few.

Heavily eyeballing the RGB one. Even without the baby stuff, it's got my brain moving thinking about musician shots (of myself and/or my guitars lol)

I don't mind if the convo strays, but probably going continuous for now and add an off-cam flash later based on the replies summary. Even though rainy/cloudy today, i'm going to take a test shot as well as note where in-cam meter goes neutral and report back. Between 11a & sunset, it was pretty bright in the area i'm thinking.

The lights are CFL and junk lol. I've gotten some decent shots off of them though. Color temp is 5000K i believe. They basically match natural cloudy lighting (mid-day cloudy color temp). Thinking of maybe getting one of the LED continuous with the color temp modes (at least 2). I'm probably going to take a dummy shot with the window and my light to see what it actually looks like.

I never shoot jpeg. 2 card slots on the K1 and shoot in DNG so have plenty of space (actually planning on upsizing the cards). DxO prime function is my usual noise reduction followed by Topaz then LR.
