Wireless flash trigger/receiver options for Pentax

I currently own a 540FGZ and 360FGZ (version I for both) as well as two older Quantaray/Promaster flashes that I used in my film days. Im aware - and regularly use, the 540/360 for wireless off camera use, being triggered by the pop up flash on my K-5. Recently the pop-up flash has been problematic/testy with recharging, and in many of my setups, I need/use two wireless flashes to provide the lighting for my shots. This has led me to look into radio triggers that are suitable for Pentax users.

From my research, it looks like our best option - Cactus - is no longer in production. While I can still find them being sold, I hesitate a bit investing into a system that may not function properly with future bodies/flashes that get released. It also looks like Godox (or Adorama/Flashpoint) doesnt make any receivers that utilize P-TTL and instead builds it into their own brand of flashes (which I dont need, nor wish to invest in). That leaves me with manual radio triggers...

Ive looked at getting some of the Flashpoint brand manual transceivers - https://www.adorama.com/fprrr2sptk.html? - but had a few additional questions before I make the plunge:

Are there any radio triggers/receivers on the market that utilize P-TTL (not an absolute must, but would be nice to have)?
If I go the route of the Flashpoint manual transceivers, is there any benefit to using the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II transmitter (https://www.adorama.com/fprrr2propii.html) vs one of the manual transceivers on the camera as the wireless transmitter?

Ricoh Imaging US Black Friday Deals

While I dont think the pricing on the deals offered are a dud, I do think this is a big missed opportunity. I tend to buy a lot of my fun "toys" for the year during black friday sales, and believe me I have several lenses on my wishlist. I know that there are supply chain issues still, but unless stock is low or profit margins on bodies/lenses is really thin, I would think that a broader sale of even just 10% off most lenses, would drive a ton of sales for Ricoh.

Perhaps they will add more as time goes on, or do another winter sale, but this kinda feels like a half-hearted sale save for the K-3iii/K-1ii offerings.

New phone, Theta SC2 wont connect

I recently upgraded my phone from an iPhone XR to an iPhone 13. I tried to connect my Theta SC2 to the new phone and I keep getting the message to "Check that the wireless LAN function of the camera is turned on" (it is). I tried to register the camera to the new phone and get the same message. Even through I did a full factory reset on my old phone, I was able to download the theta app again and connect instantly.

The help guide suggests to check the following: "Is the camera connected to a different smartphone?" Do I need to unregister the camera from the old phone? If so, does anyone know where?

Anyone else experience anything like this?

New Theta SC2 - Editing and Viewing options

For a couple of years Ive been wanting to get a Theta, and I finally took the plunge and got an SC2 to play around in the world of 360 photography. Ive been impressed with it thus far, but had a few questions and wanted to get feedback from other Theta users:

First, what is everyones preferred method (or service) for displaying 360 photos online? Starting out, Im taking a lot of photos to practice and show the test shots to friends, but I dont want to plaster them all over Facebook, as with a lot of test shots, Ill probably delete them later on (no need to clog up feeds and such with demo shots).

Second, is there a preferred platform for editing 360 photos? The Theta app that allows editing on my phone is decent, but Im very used to something like Lightroom, where I have more advanced controls like sharpening and noise reduction. For some stylized shot like little planet photos, its easy to create the photo in the mobile app, and then edit it in a tool like Lightroom.

Im really liking it so far, but it really forces you to view (and edit) things differently!

K-3 III To Be Released Next Week

Then Im even more excited than before (which excitement was already pretty high). For someone who has invested quite a bit into DA* lenses, a high end APSC makes more sense right now than a K-1 II, and in a few years, if that situations changes...we will have a K-1 III with all these new advancements in said body. For me, I never look at my images and say "Gee, this would have been SO much better if I had shot in on a FF". Im content with APSC and having a body which handles and feels like the K-1, in a compact APSC package. If the IQ and image tracking is as good as some of the better early hands on reviews have indicated, Ill be owning this camera a lot sooner than later :)

K-3 III To Be Released Next Week

They are really minor things:

Having a GPS unit onboard would have been nice. I know that there were issues with space due to the new pentaprism, so it was a piece that had to be removed. This isnt a deal breaker to me at all because we have an alternative in the O-GPS1 unit (which I do own for use on my K-5).

Having a secondary SD slot as a UHS-1 instead of dual UHS-2 slots is also intriguing, since they are backwards compatible with slower cards. This may come down to a lack of space if the processing chips are bigger for UHS-2 (or heat or power concerns), but it seems like a bit of odd choice. Again, not a deal breaker since there is at least one UHS-2 slot.

A fixed screen is the biggest sticking point. I know its been explained on why they did what they did, but Ive been in a number of situations where Ive had to put the camera in an odd position (ie - on the ground), and had real challenges composing the image due to being unable to use the viewfinder, and unable to really see the screen (think wildlife shooting, any large movements and youve spooked your target away). There were some rumors that we may be able to use our phones as a monitor for LV in a sense, but I dont know if that has been confirmed or not. If thats the case, it would solve 95% of my concern making this a non issue for me.

K-3 III To Be Released Next Week

Kerrick James posted a hands on review as well (on YouTube), in which he looked at that and stated his rough comparison is that the ISO 12800 on the K-3 III was roughly equivalent to to ISO 3200 on the K-1 II. An approximate 2 stop increase...over a FF!

The thing that many people dont get about a $2k price tag, is that this camera has updated every aspect of the K-3 II by a large margin...more than just the usual small generational increments. There are also many aspects of this camera that CANT be measured by numbers on a spec sheet. To me, it almost looks as if Ricoh said 'Hey...lets take the K-1 II, update EVERYTHING in it, and put an APSC sensor in it'. When virtually every aspect of the new K-3 III is the best of that feature in any current Pentax body, of course its going to cost more than $999.

While I do wish that a few things could have been included on this body, Im excited for it. Having invested quite a bit into DA* lenses, it makes far more sense for me to drop $2k on this body and make full use of its features, vs $2k on a FF and be forced to use it in crop mode. Frankly...every Pentaxian should be excited for this body! If its not a body for you...fine, but these technology advances will find their way into a future K-1 III and very likely a future K-70/KP replacement.

The internals of the battery are two 18500 cells. The technology (capacity) of those cells has advanced considerably since it was first used in the K-7. Im certain that higher capacity cells can be used in newer versions and for probably a cheaper cost than the older ones from 8 years ago.

May not be a true 1:1 macro, but the 04 Toy Wide Lens works wonders as a cheap closeup option for the Q system.

Was playing around when I captured this. Shot with a Q-S1 on a tripod. Edited to boost the colors in the yellow/orange area only (with slight sharpening and noise reduction). The blues and purples were naturally that vivid in the jpg SOOC. I used the flash on my cell phone to try to light the interior of the orchid.

HD-DA 55-300 WR's (new) - $146.95 at B&H

FedEx just dropped off my new 55-300 WR at my door. A quick test compared to my 20 year old Quantaray Tech-10 70-300mm lens (AKA Sigma DL Super 70-300 - NOT APO), at 300 wide open supports what Ive read. The Pentax is indeed a *hair* sharper, provides a *hair* more fine detail rendering, and has better color, in line with typical Pentax lenses. Its still a kit style lens, so Im not expecting magic with it, but my initial tests had me smiling. The focus is "slow" but that has much more to do with the fact that the focus throw in this lens is over 180 degrees, which in my opinion isnt a bad thing at all. The noise during focusing is no worse than any other screw driven lens I own.

Seeing as I needed a second long lens (as my significant other is always stealing the sigma), the $147 cost for this was beyond a steal! More kudos to Disasterfilm for the heads up on this deal!

I use Adoramapix for all my printing needs. They have been fantastic. As far as I recall, they do have ICC profiles available. Ive done 3 24x30" prints on metal, and a 20x40" print on acrylic (which I don't believe they do prints on acrylic anymore). All of them have turned out great! Just make sure that your image has the resolution and range to print that big :)

Chatted with B&H today to see if there was any update on the restock date and received the following reply:

Barry T: I have looked into this for you and currently your order is estimated to arrive at our warehouse by approximately April the 11th. As soon as we receive it in stock we will ship your order to you, and e-mail you with the tracking information. I apologize for this delay and any inconvenience it may have caused you.

I was prepared to wait a while for this lens, and its good to see that I (hopefully) wont have to wait too terribly much longer!

Ive used them before as well, and it was a pleasant experience.

Bought a "used" Q-S1 kit from them (white body) with the 5-15 and 15-45 lenses through their eBay page. Made an offer for $300 for the kit and it was accepted. Shipped quick and packaged well.

When I say "used" it appeared to be BRAND NEW. While I didnt use software to check, the image file names indicated that there were a mere 6 actuations on the body itself. There wasnt a mark on the kit anywhere. It was rated in Excellent condition (90-96% of original)

Im with you! Im patiently waiting on a back order, but I can wait for the price paid!

Im also glad to hear that people are receiving these at the price paid. I trust B&H, but I still get nervous that at a price like this, that it was some glitch or error, and orders get cancelled and nothing ships, etc.

Following the link above provides a few tidbits of information, one of which is:

* Compatible with DA-series interchangeable lenses, using an image-cropping function

To me this is one of the most CRITICAL things that needs to be done, and Ricoh is smart in doing this. People like me who have invested thousands in DA* lenses wont be left out in the complete cold when they purchase a new FF!

Photokina!

Here are my predictions -

K-FF - No where to be seen. Not happening right now. Get over it.
K-1 (Professional APSC Body) - I wouldnt be surprised if Ricoh is gauging the market on this one. Maybe we will see a mystery camera body mockup. Ultimately, it will be unnamed, and there wont be any hard information on it.
K-3 II - Not for Photokina. I suspect that as Ricoh gauges the market, and tinkers in the shadows with higher end models (we know theyve at least toyed with the thought of a FF model) we will likely see a K-3 Mk II in the spring of 2015 as a "holdover" model for something greater. Im guessing though that any K-3 successor will be next year.
K-60/70 - This will be at Photokina. Think K-3 "lite" much like the K-500 was a K-5 "lite". This model will likely have the 24 MP sensor and could have the same AF module as the K-3, as well as weather sealing, but will be limited to a 12-bit RAW, a slower FPS, and will still be without a vertical grip option.
K-600/700 - See K-60/70 above and think of the same differences as between the K-500 and K-50. No weather sealing, slower FPS, no grip. May also have an older AF module to save cost.
Q-5 - I suspect we will see an announcement for a Q improvement. Same 1/1.7" sensor, but with other improvements. 14-16 MP. Better dynamic range (albeit it will be much smaller than most will want - it is a small sensor). There will also be minor improvements to the buffer, and overall response of the camera. This new model may have a body style change to it. There has been a rumor that Ricoh will announce TWO Q models by years end. Im guessing (personal opinion) that they will be identical but one may be labelled as a Q Pro with a metal body instead of a plastic one. They may also try to separate the models more by having the plastic one with a 14 MP sensor and the metal one with a 16 MP sensor. A more radical guess is that they may make them 100% identical internally, with the only difference of the more expensive one having some sort of EVF (either built in or as an attachment that can ONLY communicate with the Q-5 and NOT the older models).
Macro lens for Q - Im guessing that this one is close to ready to go, and we will probably see a more finalized mockup and maybe an official announcement.
K-series lenses - Id guess that Ricoh will show at least one mockup of a lens there. Not sure how close it is to being ready to go. Dont be surprised either if Ricoh announces the DA 18-55 AL HD lens (in God knows how many versions - L, WR, ?) Theyve HD'd everything else, its time for the kit lens to have its day again.

There will also be substantial space given to the 645 and emphasis on "all the lenses" available.

After Photokina 23% of the readers of this post will declare that Ricoh is "Doomed" and of that 23%, 15% of them will jump ship to another brand with 12% of them returning within 12 months. 52% will be utterly disappointed and will threaten to leave the brand if they dont improve their offerings in the next year. As for me, Ill take my K-5 and Q out shooting and love every minute of it!
