low budget options for daylight, shallow DOF portrait with a flash

One can get that look using the flashes you have, a long telephoto lens and an inexpensive umbrella or soft box. Using a long telephoto lens will give you the desired blurred background. Taking an ambient light reading then dropping it will give you the subtle darkened background look, while using an off camera flash with an umbrella or soft box can give you the subjects lighting.

That region.. Striped bass, Largemouth & Small mouth Bass, 3 varieties of catfish, white and yellow perch mainly. Some walleye mostly on the Susquehanna. If you go to Lewes, Rehobeth or Jersey shore depending on the time of year you can throw some salt water into the mix.

I fish quite often down around there. I have had it out when sudden 30mph winds have come up and 2-3ft chop. Not my favorite but it will handle it and get me back safely.

To answer a couple questions from another thread. The bay around Havre de Grace currently is more brackish on the fresh water side of things changing to fresh around the 95 fwy bridge turning into fresh. It has been this way for over 3 years now due to all of the rains. Prior to that you could stand on any of the banks in HDG and see crabs in numbers, not so much now. This is the set up I use to fish all of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas.

I wouldn't mind answering any of your questions but I don't think it fair to others this thread gets hijacked from it's topic. So if you'd like I'll start one over in General Talk under Chesapeake Bay Kayak Fishing header.

I like it here, there is a lot of photography opportunity in and around the area. I haven't been doing as much photography as late, been kayak fishing more. The big time of the year for eagles at the Conowingo is in November but man it's gotten to be a zoo there now at that time so go early or you may not find a place to park on the weekend. It can be hit or miss as to whether there are a lot around. I suggest bringing a very long lens and a gimbal head on a good tripod.

To Lightroom or Not To Lightroom, that is the question...

As a long long time user of PS and one who was not a proponent of using Lightroom, when I converted to the CC format when it first came out my thoughts were oh well light room is included I'll never use it because PS does so much more. As I've delved more into Lightroom and it's capabilities I use it a lot more than just for photo organizing and it has become my main software for the beginning and for some the end of all of my photo editing. I find It does beautifully what PS ACR can do in one program. I say this because there is no opening in Bridge, then ACR, then switching to PS. The beauty of the CC format is I can do my editing in lightroom, If I need or want to continue with what requires layering, with a couple clicks of a button while still in Lightroom open my photo in PS for any layered effects or using other software such as Topaz I wish to perform.

You forgot another HSS compatible trigger that work with Pentax ... The Aokatec triggers. I have successfully been using those since before the others came out.

Focal lengths and crops...

Afaik another factor that comes into play outside of the focal length difference is the Nikkor 200-500 used on a dx camera has a narrower angle of view throughout its range @ 800-310' than the 150-450 Pentax 16.5-5 . That narrower angle will give the appearance of a subject being closer than that of the Pentax lens.

New user back AF button question
Posted By Oldbayrunner

Are you focusing on the same subject? Once you press the AF2 button and take your finger off it the focus will lock but image stabilization should stay on. This allows you to recompose without losing focus on the subject/depth of field or change your exposure settings locking them using the Ael button. Slightly pressing the shutter button should release the focus lock. If your focusing on a different subject then pressing the AF2 should refocus if it is a different distance.

K3 and K3ii - color on LCD different from raw file brought into Lightroom

Basically you don't, the image on the thumbnail is showing the image using the cameras processing engine the best you can do is have the exposure correct as possible.. The Imported raw image lacks very little to no processing prior to importing into any raw imaging software. When imported the image you see is that software's initial engine processing then it is up to you to make the adjustments until you achieve the look you want.

Did they already take the money out of your account prior to the incident? if so I don't know about where you live but in the USA that is considered a binder for which the insuring company is obligated to pay.

BetterBatt K-3 Grip

There are two types out there. The lesser expensive ones usually do not have the seals around the contacts, meaning no wr. If you look closely at this one it does so it will have some wr to it. They are not as robustly built as the Pentax but they do work well. I have one I have had now for a couple of years on my K5 lls. On my k3 ll I use the Pentax one..

I've purchased from them for several years. In all that time I only received 1 item that didn't work when I received it. They promptly sent me a return authorization and offered a refund. I didn't chose the refund and the duplicate item they sent me was a better grade then I first ordered.

I'm left eyed also and have no problems. Happiness was finding when I bought my K3ll they had moved AF backbutton to a different location then on my K5lls, which it's location to me did get somewhat in the way.

Can't update firmware from 1.00 to 1.10

True, however this is what the SD Formatter software can do and do it in such a manner as to not delete the protected area of the SD card. Many people have run into problems with using SD card types in their cameras after formatting them using Windows formatting. This is why the SD Association created this software as a safe means of formatting SD cards using a pc.

Using a pc low level format vs using SD Formatter can complicate matters further as it wipes out the partitioned protected area which can have adverse results when attempting to use the card in a dslr. Granted you can reformat it in the dslr if it will recognize the card but why go through double the work. Doing a low level format with the SD Formatter software maintains that protected portion and can be used in the dslr without needing to use the camera formatter after doing a low level format.

This is not a good thing to do. Not all cards use Fat32 and formatting with a pc wipes out the partition the camera creates which can cause problems. Either just format in camera or use this software if you want to format them using a pc... https://members.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Well I'll be darned, yep I see the review now. Wonder why it doesn't show up on their site, oh well. I don't know if it would. From my checking Cactus seems to have certain flashes they wont work with. The last time I checked my Sigma 610 super wouldn't. I would contact Catus to find out for sure.

Learned a long time ago not to bother reading anything by Thom Hogan or Ken Rockwell, waste of time, much better things to do than get caught up in anything they have to say.
