DA 21/3,2 retest on photozone

Comparing DA21 to DA18-55 or DA12-24 is an apples to oranges comparison. Look at Voigtlander Color Skopar 20mm...less sharp in the corners (at least on FF). The challenge is to design a good compact wide angle lens.

The data is pretty typical for wide angle lenses, though. This is why Zeiss T* 21 is so exceptional and expensive, I guess... In any event, DA 21 is meant to be a compact landscape or cityscape lens. If you're shooting landscape you're shooting at f/8 or smaller apertures.

A cautionary tale, I suppose. From that photo, it looks like you just put it in an envelope and didn't put a lens cap on it.

The first photo looks very weird. Did you selectively sharpen the bird? The top of the bird's head does not appear to have noise, while the rest of the bird does. Also, look at the bird's beak and right foot.

Zoom vs Prime

You can buy fast quality SMC-A primes. A fast "modern" zoom would actually be more expensive. In fact, even the old SMC-A 35-105 f/3.5 sells for more than some of the old primes.

Your posts are some of the silliest I've read on these forums. :p

Wow, is this a joke? When people say "micro-contrast," they mean the graph on the MTF chart corresponding to say, 30 line-pairs per mm. By "macro-contrast", they mean the graph on the MTF chart correspond to say, 10 line-pairs per mm.

You sound like you've never used Mac OS X for too long. I've used Linux and FreeBSD since the 90s, so while I use Mac OS X, I frequently use the terminal and *nix utilities. I tend to think of Mac OS X as FreeBSD with a GUI and better application support.

A quality f/4 lens and a quality f/1.4 lens intended for a 135 or APS-C camera will both be sharpest at around f/5.6 in the center. Regardless of the max aperture, the image will be evenly sharp at around f/8. The max aperture does not necessarily affect the aperture at which sharpness peaks.

K5 High Iso 'banding'

At the pixel peeping level, you wouldn't notice the banding.

This sort of pattern noise is more pronounced on the K20D at ISO1600-3200. I guess I haven't noticed it on the K5 because I shoot at at most ISO1600. I try to bump one stop per camera generation (I was shooting at at most ISO800 with the K20D).

Yes.

Pretty much. My guess the difference is in the coatings and the glass itself.

Pretty much.

From what I read there is a slight difference (because of the coatings, etc.). I couldn't find the comparison shots though.

Is the MSRP of $800 correct? MSRP for the body should be $400, probably. It's a bizarro P&S.

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 as good as primes?

However, the data is in the lenses themselves (starting with the Kaf2 mount), I believe.

Here are some charts for older lenses:

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 as good as primes?

Manufacturers have always released charts with MTF on the y-axis and image position on the x-axis. Curves would correspond to a fixed LW/mm frequency value (and either meridional or sagittal lines). A smaller frequency would correspond to macro-contrast, whereas a larger frequency would correspond to micro-contrast. The height of the curve would indicate how much of either one you should expect at the given point on the image.

The stuff that's on the web is pretty lazily done, IMHO.

There is a reason why they include corner and border performance. Take a look at MTF charts released by manufacturers. Also take a look at slrgear.com. Having high performance in a tiny part of the centre of the image isn't useful is it?
