K1 vs K3-III choice

Well, selling the K1 will fund the K3-iii, but also I travel lightly, so can’t see myself carrying 2 cameras.

K1 vs K3-III choice

So I have a K1 and am very keen to have a K3-iii based on the reviews so far. Why change? Well, I love the K1 for the big viewfinder, but would love apc for the reach to photograph birds with my 150-450.

I love the DR and ability to crop using the K1.

So, what will I miss upgrading to the K3-iii?

I advised a colleague to buy a LED ceiling light for exposed T ceilings for his slide collection. He bought a 600mm square light. It has a diffuser on it which was perfect. I’ve never seen someone so ecstatic as he was. Similar to this LED Thin Ceiling Light Panels, 2x2ft, Dimmable, 45W, 4000K White

I’m my own worst critic. I see what is published here and on Facebook photo sites and believe mine aren’t good enough.

Anyone else finding this dull weather interfering with their photgraphy?

Asking an international forum about “this dull weather” is a bit insular. Where I am, driving 20km gives me totally different weather. 15000km away, well you are in winter and I am in summer. I have not had dull weather in months.

Worth upgrading 55-300 WR for PLM version for soccer?

While the DA*60-250 is optically better than the 55-300's, its focus speed is not known to be fast. It's probably one of the slowest focusing lenses I've known.

I presume your camera is compatible with the PLM version. Of all the lenses made by Pentax, it has least compatible bodies.

Edit. I see you have a K3 which is compatible....

Help. Ricoh Image Sync App

Note that apple requires you to connect first, then open the app. Android is very different in that it requires you to open the app, then connect using the app. Android also now warns me (Huawei) that the camera wifi does not have Internet access and the default is to move to another wifi connection.

It is not the best app. It still does not remember my previous log in. If it hangs on my Android, I connect on my iPad and change the password. It then works on Android.

Upgrading to K1 or sticking with APS-C

I upgraded from the K5 to the K1. The K1 is in another dimension. The 28-105 is an amazing lens considering its price and size. What you lose in the lens you gain in the sensor size. In other words, all things being equal, a photo viewed at the same size a K1 gives better resolution as you have more pixels and you are magnifying less. So the same lens will perform better on the K1 for the same size finished photo.

I have no regrets.

I'm quite insufficient for my K-1..... and I know it!

If the K1 was perfect, every shot I take would only require me to compose. It isn't, because I have to hold it still to prevent movement blur. It is a fine camera which does not really limit my ability. It isn't needed, but it is so much fun to use that it is the reason I use it.

In a similar way I upgraded from a mode-of-transport to a fun car. I didn't need to, but driving now is fun.

My K1 was expensive but I've paid for it. I use it (even in a Holiday festival) as it is a tool.

I still have fun and admire its craftsmanship.

Should I get the Pentax D FA F2.8ED SDM WR 15-30mm f/2.8

I couldn't justify the price for my "needs" so I've bought the Samyang 14mm f2.8. It's manual focus, but with that ultra wide angle, manual focus is fine.

I still would like the 15-30 though.....

It's actually incredibly easy to modify it. You unscrew 5 screws, remove the baffle, then screw it back. It's worth the effort....

That only tests the mechanical strength. There is also the flexible cable that powers the screen. I'm also concerned with its durability.

Full frame lenses on aps-c, any +/-

While FF lenses on aps-c use the 'sweet spot' of the lens, and thus have less middle to edge variation, the resultant image is magnified more relative to FF to create the same size print out. Hence focus accuracy needs to be better.

Now all this is trying to compare different systems while trying to fix some of the variables. But it does explain why legacy lenses may not be so great on APS-C..

Another observation. While the hood of a FF lens on APS-C might be too wide, what about the hood on a zoom. It can't be perfect for both wide and tele! A lens is always a compromise of conflicting requirements.

HD Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE

As Adam pointed out, the manual focus is by wire so it needs the focus motor. Playing around it is not very slow with manual focus. Hence the motor works, but as on Auto focus, it moves rapidly in fits and starts. It rarely gets focus as it overshoots and gives up. I've cleaned the contacts but it still doesn't work.

I'll let you know when I get it seen to.

I know Pentax lenses aren't quick, but this is glacial. Like 3 seconds to move from near focus to far focus.

It's not back or front focus issues, it's so slow that the camera gives up.

I'll clean the mount. But I don't hold hope.

My daughter complained about slow, bad focus of her DA18-50 on her K-S2. I tried it on my K-1, thinking it might be camera related. The lens is very slow, hunts and misses focus often.

I'm taking it back as it's 8 months old and did work well earlier.

I know the DA*16-50 suffers from SDM failure but thought the DC motor was reliable.

Any other failure experience with this lens?

K-1 Buttons

My only gripe is the autofocus button (for back-button focus) is angled such that it does not fit nicely onto my thumb. While with the K5 I needed back button focus, I have reverted to half press shutter for focus.

I too went into live-view many times till my muscle memory kicked in.

But all-in-all, the K1 is a great, well laid out camera.

it all depends on your camera. The K200 needed very little pp to get a good image. Jpeg were good straight out the camera. The K5 needed much pp to make the image not bland. Raw was essential. The K1 needs very little to get a good image. After fiddling with raw, my images don't look much different to jpeg sooc. Well, that's my experience for normal lighting shots.

It's not great, but I have used it to post images on Facebook. If the photo needs some work on it and I want to watermark it, I still need to use LR. Instagram needs to have a Windows version..

I think all SLR cameras wifi apps are pretty buggy and not well written.

You need to connect with the SSID and password configured on your camera. Once connected you can change them using the app on the phone. Regularly I fail to connect using my Sony Android phone, but using an iPad I connect, change the password then I can connect using Android. Wierd and buggy.

Using Back Button focus vs Shutter release

On my K5 I set up a User mode to allow me to revert to conventional shutter focus so I could give it to others to use. I had back button focus on continuous too.

On the K1, I find the back button in an awkward position so I have to reverted to shutter button focus.

Why do companies remove In-lens Image Stabilization in k-mount version of lenses?

With the new KAF4 mount that does away with the mechanical aperture link, does that mean that Sigma will be easily (cheaply?) able to convert its lenses to allow Pentax K1, K70, KS2, K3II users to enjoy the new Sigma's? Or will this incompatibility with the K5, K3, etc. cause more of a headache to Sigma?
