I love Lightroom BUT....

Well this is not a problem for the Lightroom problem but Windows should allow you to change the drive back from F to G.

This is kinda hidden in the control panel so if you don't know where to look you might miss it.

I'm using a Dutch version of XP so it might be different on your system but it should be under :

Control Panel -> System Management (NOT system, could also be System Control or something like that). -> Computer Management -> Drive Management

if I'm correct you should see all drives (and DVD/CD Devices) in a list. If you right-click the drive you want you should see an option to change the drive letter.

first change the G to something else since you cannot change the F to G if G is already taken :D

Good Luck !

file... open ?

Or does Picasa use a format that's not supported ?

Anyway, I think Photoshop uses Bridge. You basically browse the folders with Bridge and then you select them (right-click and edit in Photoshop).

Well I have to wait till the 10th since for some reason my CreditCard company is in the habit of denying larger payments between the closure date of the previous mith and the moment the money goes from my bank account (the 10 unless it's during the weekend) I guess it's a security feature or something ? smaller payments are mostly not a problem.

Also I noticed that the English versions are available so maybe they will hold the announcement until the Dutch version is released (since I'm in Belgium and am forwarded to the Belgian store). So I guess the English version could be bought If I wanted to (still doubting if I will upgrade my PS CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3 to the new CS4 editions.

Do they work on XP ? since I wanted to try the beta's but Photoshop CS4 needed Vista Premium (didn't work on XP IIRC and also not on Vista Home Basic).

Is CS4 already released ?

Last time I checked they had the option "Notify Me" where I added my email but I didn't get a mail announcing it's release yet (this was for Dreamweaver CS4 and Photoshop CS4 not the entire suits so maybe those are already released and Photoshop CS4 alone not ?).

PS Elements 7.0 Student version?

For stuff from Microsoft (Windows and Office) it might also be a good idea to ask the salesperson about the OEM versions.

Some will claim that it's not legal (need to buy a new PC to be able to get it) but that's incorrect ! It's 100% legal to buy Vista OEM (for example) the downside is that you don't get support (basically according to the license YOU are your own support) and the box must be sealed when you buy it. Oh, and you can't transfer the license to another computer (is locked to the Mobo but Microsoft might help you incase of a Motherboard problem for example).

I recently got Vista Home Basic for a very low price this way.

PS Elements 7.0 Student version?

Doesn't Adobe offer "Educational" pricing ?

Of so then it's the full product at a lower price, but you need to "prove" that you (or your son) is a student.

I think it involves sending them a mail with a copy of his student ID or something.

There is a downside in the future I think since I remember reading something about not beeing able to update in the future but I'm not sure.

Anyways, you can look at the Adobe website (maybe the Download edition is even a few $$ cheaper) and if you go to the store ask about it (just to be sure, but PSE is already a "limited" version of PS so I don't think they will limit it even more).

If you have Bridge (so if you own Dreamweaver CS3, Photoshop CS3 or any other Adobe program that comes with Brige) you can get somekind of expansion for Bridge to make galleries.

I don't know if this is easier then what you are using now but if you have Bridge it might be something to look at ?

File compression software help

Winzip ? :D

I personally prefer Total Commander previously known as Windows Commander. It's not really a compression tool but it supports compression and decompression of files (just select the files you want and go to compress).

AlbumShaper is also a nice tool (but I think it only supports JPEG so might not be as easy as SlideShow Pro for Lightroom which can work with the RAW's straight out of Lightroom).

Advantage of AlbumShaper is that you can run it on both windows and linux, the albums are also pretty nice (but it doesn't have any feature to sort it just displays the photos in the order you've setup).

I think Slideshow Pro can make flash based albums.

but I don't know if you can search the album on lens, camera, ...

Also I guess there is a difference between Slideshow Pro and Slideshow pro for Lightroom ??

Using 16bit images in PS Elements 6

I don't know about layers and stuff but I know that both PSE and CS3 have a bunch of plug-ins that only work with 8-Bit images (CS3 can't save a 16-Bit image as JPEG as I know).

so I'm not sure of moving to CS3 or CS4 (seen the Beta around at Adobe but it needs Vista Premium which I don't have) will fix your problems. But at least Layers should work for 16-Bit images on CS3.

Yes, or Desktop at Work and Desktop at Home.

They also allow you do "deactivate" a system (say the work desktop) and activate on another system (like a laptop) if you go on a business trip for example.

after the trip you can deactivate the laptop and re-activate the work desktop (or so they claim).

I don't know how it works when your laptop is stolen or something like that while it's activated ?

I just had my desktop crash on me (came a burning smell out of the PC and the harddrive is completely dead) so I was unable to deactivate my software so I hope Adobe can do something for me.

Yeah, look interesting indeed. But for how long are they announcing Bibble 5 now ? (I rememeber when I got my license for it they already had a message to "hurry" since the price would go up after the release of 5 (and now when you buy 4.9 the upgrade for 5 is free).

Same here, some people claim it's a great product but Lightroom seems much easier to use but Bibble 5 seems to look a bit like Lightroom.

I'm using a Wacom Volito with my laptop and I'm fairly happy with it.

You will need to get used to it though (the first days/weeks i had problems with my wrist and such since it's a new way of working).

Also the disadvantages of this specific tablets are :

- Size, it's pretty small which is good for travel but less accurate
- Only 1 button you can set.

with something like the Graphire you have a 2 way-button so you can set button 2 to right-click and button 1 to double-click for examle. With my tablet I need to double-click the pen on the tablet to double-click and if it's not done on the same place then the software doesn't always see it as a double-click (mostly in Lightroom 1).

Also the graphire can be fliped over (then pen) and use the back as an eraser so you don't need to switch tools in Photoshop when you want to remove something.

I'm not sure what the Bamboo can do but I would advise looking into it and see if it's features fit you needs (you don't wanna buy ther cheapest model and then discover that you had better payed a bit more and have a more functional tablet).

I don't edit that much and for general browsing the Voitio is enough but if I buy a new one in the future I will look for something with some more options like the Graphire (is they still exist).

Are you a Lightroom 1 user (registered) ??

In that case you don't need an invite, just use your LR1 serial to extend the trial (if I remember correctly).

if you are not a LR1 user I'll be happy to send you an invite (just let me know).

PSE 5.0 and Camera Raw 4.4

It's actually kinda funny to see that when you go to the Camera Raw page on Adobe they have 4.3.1 as the latest version (there might be 4.4 written somewhere but it points to 4.3.1) BUT when you go to download -> updates and select Photoshop Win in the search box to get ALL updates for Photoshop the list includes both Camera Raw 4.4 and DNG Converter with Camera Raw 4.4 and downloads to them.

so if you look at the wrong location you don't know that 4.4 was pulled.

Didn't Adobe pull ACR 4.4 and Lightroom 1.4 because of some bugs in it ?

Last thing I heard about it was that they plan to release ACR 4.4.1 and Lightroom 1.4.1 somewhere in the first half of this month.

so people who are interested into beta testing this could have a look here.

be sure to read the release notes (since it's a BETA release).

Also in the same article they annouce Lightroom 1.4.1 and Camera Raw 4.4.1 to be released in the first half of this month (april).

Photoshop Express now online

True, but I guess it's an automated service that maintains this. I doubt there is a person at Adobe that manually controls this. I guess Photoshop sends some kind of system ID to a central server and then the server sends the activation back. When there are 2 system already activated it will probably deny to activate a 3rd time until you de-activate on one of the 2 other system.

What I do wonder is will this allow to activate CS3 again if you had to re-install after a serious crash (if it keeps the system ID in a DB I guess it would allow this since no hardware would change). Or what when someone steals your Laptop/Desktop ? Then you will need to contact Adobe and ask them if you can activate again.

There might be a "security" feature though that monitors the activations and de-activations and when it "detects" anything suspicious a certain person get's involved.

I've been using OtsDJ for a while now (pure personal use) and they use a similar activation system (only allows you to install on 1 system unless you buy a 2nd or 3rd license) and they keep your system ID on file so you can always re-install and re-activate as long as there are not to many hardware changes that cause the system ID to chance. When you want to install on a new system you can request them to allow you another activation (you will offcourse need to remove it from the "old" system) and they will mostly do this within a few days (they grant you a "temp" license for 7 days in the meantime so you can continue using the product until they sort it out for you.

Maybe Adobe uses a similar system and maybe they don't but I guess it's automated since that would save them a bunch of money because they don't need 1 fulltime (or more) tech. to manually keep track of these activations.
