Why Do YOU Stay With Pentax?

A pair of lenses in my collection are enough to make me want to stay with the brand indefinitely. Those are the FA31 and the A*85. Others of you, I'm sure, feel similarly about certain other lenses you own. They aren't just an investment in photographic technology with certain specifications; there's something more visceral in my connection to them and the fluency they lend to certain kinds of shooting.

I don't feel any particular passion about the camera bodies or any particular features they have; nor about any of my other lenses, most of which are fine workhorses at their focal lengths. My attachment to Pentax mostly just comes down to those two extraordinary lenses. If I lost/broke those and couldn't replace them, I wouldn't much care what system I was using.

Awesome! And as a totally irrelevant aside, just as many older Pentax shooters know Michael Franks for his "how come you always load your Pentax when I'm in the nude" lyric, I imagine a lot of bari sax players know this nugget from David Bromberg.

I went and bought myself a lottery ticket just to change my luck
I thought I wouldn't mind the losing 'cuz it only cost a buck
I won an e-lec-tric toaster and a baritone sax
But I had to pawn my clothes just to pay off the tax

I'm not remotely offended by this idea - nor by anything else that constitutes a bit of harmless, if bizarre and absurd, nostalgia for its own sake. If you hand me one, it's not going to become a family heirloom or something, but I'll probably shoot with it for a while and be pleased and amused. This before handing it on to another aging "hipster."

They had lots of tulips back in the spring, now the highlights are a riot of roses, cone flowers and various-colored day lilies, in addition to some really interesting kinetic sculptures, and always multiple species in the butterfly wing, a different mix every time I go. Yesterday there was a sort of green glasswing I'd never seen before (and neglected to photograph, oops). Every year the place gets a little more grand. You should come back and visit! Hope you and your son are well.

If you have an MX-1 and a botanical garden nearby, or just flowers or bugs or other macro-worthy little curiosities around you, then I hope you're familiar with what the "1cm macro" mode is capable of. It somehow always surprises me. If you too have forgotten, take yours for a walk! Sometimes it helps to dial exposure down a bit if dealing with intense colors, to prevent clipping individual sensor channels.

I'd been shooting the Q7 mostly with the 01 and 02 lenses, and then picked up the 08 this spring. I'd been pretty happy before, but now feel more like I'm "all in" with the Q system. I love being able to produce quality ultrawide images from such a portable package.

The P30n is spoken for. Availability list has been updated at top of the thread.

---------- Post added 06-29-18 at 11:34 AM ----------

MV-1 and ZX-10 are sold! Thanks to all who are helping me declutter and please the spousal unit.

The sale post has been updated, but to recap here, the Franken-ME-Super-SE, P30t, and ZX30 remain, and the ZX30 appears to be teetering on the edge of being claimed.

---------- Post added 06-29-18 at 08:49 PM ----------

P30t and ZX30 are tentatively sold. Any takers on the ME Super SE?

Alas, the KM was the first to sell! Sorry about that.

-- edit -- but I just added an MV-1 to the list, which I think is pretty similar to the MG.

I was a die-hard film shooter (and collector) for some time until catching the stereophotography bug, and that's what finally pushed me over the edge into full time digital.

So the following bodies are available for $10 each, shipped in the U.S. I'd rather not consider international sales at this time. This is essentially just covering the cost of packing and USPS postage. If there are homes for any of these, I'd like them to find those homes.

Except for the ZX-5's known inoperative popup flash, condition in all cases should be considered working last I knew, since I haven't been shooting film for a while. The manual bodies like the KM are easy to test and have confidence in. Auto exposure in, say, the ME Super SE, is a little harder to be sure of; but fully testing those would require burning a roll of film. Anyway at the price, I think the arrangement should be that if you're a contributing forum member in good standing and you get a clunker unexpectedly, you'll let me know and I'll just refund and let you keep it. [[don't take advantage of me]] ;)

Pentax KM -- sold
Pentax Franken-KM (top plate and pentaprism from K1000; advance lever from spotmatic; gray griptac skin), much used and loved -- sold
Pentax Franken-ME-Super-SE with finger grip and film door from donor Super Program -- sold
Pentax MV-1 -- sold
Pentax P30n -- sold
Pentax P30t -- sold
Pentax ZX-10 - has a fresh mirror motor gear, should be good for years of use -- sold
Pentax ZX-30 - I acquired this expecting to do the usual gear repair, but it was fine, and I've shot several rolls with it. really an excellent camera for A- and FA- type lenses -- sold
Pentax ZX-5 - has a fresh mirror motor gear (condition note: popup flash does not fire, but hotshoe works) -- sold

I'll add pictures of these as requested.

--------------------------------------------

edit: Franken-ME-Super-SE pictures, per requests from two users. The film door and the front finger grip are both from a Super Program. The timer lever has been shortened to allow it to rotate past the grip. Note that the grip is attached with epoxy; the screw which had been used to attach it to the other body has no function here.

--------------------------------------------

edit: P30n & P30t pictures requested via PM earlier today. The P30t wasn't in the original list, but is available on the same terms as the rest. The P30n is new-looking, and has a strap and I think the original eyecup. The P30t might have a few more miles on it, and lacks the eyecup and strap. Both are in great functional shape.

re-edit: P30n is sold, P30t still available

--------------------------------------------

edit: someone has requested pictures of the ZX-30. It comes with the pictured strap. There's a date back which reads blank; probably it needs a battery, CR2025 type. I also have a 4xAA adaptor that works with this (or any of the ZXes listed here); add $10 to include it with the camera.

--------------------------------------------

edit: a look at the Franken-KM, in answer to two requests.

re-edit: this one is now sold

As to why this one was cobbled together so: the KM had been an as-is ebay purchase. It arrived with the top plate crumpled and the pentaprism cracked in a way that had been visible through the viewfinder. Since I had a K1000 on hand with unrelated issues, I combined the two to make this. (The Spotmatic lever replacement was unnecessary whimsy - I just liked how it looked.)
--------------------------------------------

For now I'm still reserving the following for my own future use: silver MX with blue cameraleather.com skin; K1000SE with red cameraleather.com skin; ZX-5n with replaced mirror motor gear (real workhorse, that camera); Spotmatic SP refurbished by Eric and wearing textured green skin from Aki-Asahi. If you find yourself jonesing for one of these, PM me for pictures and to discuss offers, but for now my priority is finding homes for as many as possible of the bodies listed at the top of this post.

K-01, Lensbaby Composer Pro, creative bokeh optic, starburst aperture disk

Another - this time with multiple exposures, and in cross-eye stereo format for those willing to try it:

back, back, back

... actually, the above works in traditional parallel-view as well, the depth is just reversed. Since it's pretty much an abstract, that doesn't matter much; it's effectively in 3D either way.

The figurines are quite interesting, and I like the motion blur of the background on several shots. Could you say what lens was used? Looks like the EXIF metadata has been stripped from your photo files.

K-01, Lensbaby Muse

Kirby would like to be allowed in the kitchen now please

I hadn't used the accordion-style Lensbaby Muse for a long time, since acquiring a Composer, and was thinking about selling it. In fact I hadn't mounted it on anything since back when my best Pentax body was a K20D. But now I find that focus peaking makes the old Muse much easier to shoot with than before, and although my keeper rate with it is still pretty low (and I still didn't quite nail focus on the eye here), it's a faster, more spontaneous process than the separate unlock, swivel, lock, focus operations of the Composer. Definitely time to get re-acquainted with this obscure low-tech toy.

Another GIMP-on-Linux user here, wondering if you know about the standalone NeatImage package. It's not open source, but to my eyes the free version performs better than any of GIMP's built-in denoising methods including those in G'MIC. Also there is a way, with some putzing, to wire it in as a very basic GIMP plugin. I eventually bought the pro version to lift the jpeg-only restriction (so the plugin can run losslessly as png-out/png-in), and also just to support them for supporting Linux.

I'm not a darktable user and can't speak to any comparisons on that side.

Looks like that was my problem. I turned it around and pressed it further in, and it is "focusing" correctly now, though maybe a bit decentered, so to speak. I probably have it a little tilted in there. Anyway I think nothing's damaged. More experimenting to come.

(By the way: here's a cross-eye 3D version of the same scene, for those who are into that sort of thing. The 07 is pretty interesting as a stereography lens.)

Since I get asked with some frequency too and haven't known what to say, and -- as this thread illustrates -- it's a somewhat malleable question, I've taken to having business cards printed up and carrying a few around in my wallet. The cards have contact information, some of the types of photography I do (which mostly happen to be for my own enjoyment, but why not leave open the possibility if someone wants to hire me), even a brief model/subject release form. I think that half the time when people ask if you're a photographer, they aren't sure what they mean by it either.

My wife and I were actually going to visit Hungary and Romania this year, but it was a group outing that fell through because of circumstances outside our control. Maybe we'll get another chance soon. At least, even if we're otherwise stereotypically ignorant Yankees, we do understand about Budapest and Bucharest being different places.

Hope you enjoy it here!

Unfortunately I got quite sick a few days ago, and haven't felt like shooting or experimenting (or really doing much of anything) since then. I can say that last I tried with the 07, I couldn't manage center focus regardless of distance, so I suspect I may have damaged the element, or maybe it's in there backwards. Or maybe I just need to experiment more with moving it around. I'm rather a klutz mechanically, so it is vitally important that anything I take apart be inexpensive to start with. Happily, this item qualifies. :-) I'll post again when I've been able to get back into it.

Hrmmmm.... I must be missing something obvious here. I can't get the lens element to budge no matter what I do. I couldn't find a pry point that worked, and have now gone so far as to entirely chip away all three of the glue segments. Still nothing. How do you "lift" the element out? I guess the next step might be to try to push it out from the other side, through the iris hole, but I have every expectation of scratching it if I do that.

Was I just unlucky enough to encounter one assembled with ultra-atomic-bond™?

---- edited to add ----

Got it out. I ended up cutting out a notch in the plastic body under one of the three slots where the glue had been, and prying up from there. Of course then the element popped completely out and I can't tell which side is supposed to be up for it, if it's not actually symmetrical. Now the fun starts... :o
