How does Pentax AF-C compare to other brands?

With duo K3 II and Sigma 18-50 AF only troubles I had with few mounth old child indoor. It was not dark room, but with curtains a lot of times with 2.8 I have to use ISO 1600 and up to 3200. I have missing shot of kids, but it was before I start using on slower screwdriver 77 len AF back button focusing. Technique is one of the issue. From other hand I see how easy photograph get photos group of people with Canon 6D mark II in church where light condition was similar demending as my in room. Outside with this Sigma AF was not issue. Only problem I have with back/front focusing on this lens.

I really do not know how commented lack in AF on Pentax. On K1 II in extreme light condition with 77 I have hunting (extreme = f 1.7, iso 256000 from auto body choose). From other hand with prefocusing on 100 WR new macro I can get precise infocus in part of the second. It is amazing how K3 II and K1 II can be responsive in good light condition. My little experience is that in low light conditions AF is changing. In real life on day light with dynamic shots it maybe 1 on 10 or 1 on 20 missing shot if AF was prepared with prefocusing. In low light without AF button using only auto and combo shutter button with AF together it is missing a lot of more photos. Pentax is not for switch on body and takes dynamic shots in part of the second unfortunetelly. With preperation distance is narrowed.

I do not shot with a lot lens, so after kit, WR 100 (new type), 77 limited and mentioned Sigma is a lot limited impression.

Eye focus and similar stuff are fancy and interesting but are for burts and trash mode of shooting. With good eyes (not for me, because as asthigmathism I have sometimes problems with MF) at the same you can use MF and take 20-30 shots. For me will be very impressive when you can will be switch on body and take sharp photo below second in low light with fast prime in edge of frame.

K1 II - best legacy budget lens on the best price to IQ value ratio for the lowest $

Eh, a lot of people buy in this times phonograph, because for audiophiles sound from it is better, because remastering sound for digital cut off details make subtle difference which is called by them "true sound".

In today standards a lot of legacy lens are out, but when you stop and think more about it they have a lot of unique features. The most of them are tiny and easy to use when travelling because of small weight and dimensions. For legend is 77 limited which is poor lens in today standards, because it not have motor, AW/WR sealing, sharpness from edge to edge, purple fringering and noisy focusing. But compare 50/1.4 AW Pentax to them when you go to mountain and walking all day long. What can you do with this small monster it is amazing... You can put in on the jacket and when you put on K1 you do not feel weight.

Photography is the art of seeing and not buying stuff. A lot of people think that camera does matter. It is nonsense! At the same lens really does not matter if you can not compose correct your photo and you can not take advantage with what the simplest DSLR tool give you. I see people buying camera with kit and it is all. We are speaking about how get inexpensive tool for learning and making good IQ for resonable price.

I have the same opinion. This lens are amazing for learning. Experience with manual focusing on Pentax 50/1.7 M I use a lot on my limited. Sometimes my body can not focus on subject. Last weeks I take shot on extreme low light condition when F1.8 get me 1/10s on 256000 ISO. Sometimes you have to switch off auto modes to start thinking when is necessary and how it affect your final image.

Yes, I wrote about adapter. I exclude M42 lens, because I hear from few sources about stucking on body. I would avoid it.

To be clear. I create this thread for people who looking for options.

I use on my body 77 limited and new version 100 WR macro. Before I will save money for my 70-200 FA*/2.8, 24-70/2.8 WR I want shoot on something budget to be more comfortable with angles and limitation to locate my money with lens for years not for reselling as some people do wasting money for endless buying and selling. I choose 77 limited after 6-7 thousand shots with 50/1.7 M Pentax. I understand where fast prime is good, where are limits of desing, how use it on demanding variacy situation for me, which shots I like and what tool I need it for it. At the same I choose my bodies after about ~15 years shooting on compact, low level K200D body and Nikon F65 film body.

With respect I can not understand ptohographers which first buy the most expensive equipment which can affort before they learn what is their style, favorite angle of view, how fast and when which lens needed and how see by photographic eye not commercial ads. I prefer buy the most quality expensive optics without looking for price only when I fully understand what this particular design give me, how it move my photographic limits and take me on another level.

Some people prefer zooms, others primes, but the most important thing that their make choice for remove limits which they're experienced not by only MTF values and opinions from reviews. I ask here for hobbyst not top level professional which need it only the best tool for job, because they fully understand how equipment work and they can not lost money, because make bad shots for clients. Before you put money you have to be preper for it.

I can not find suggestion for example for younger pentaxian on forum today. When you learn your kids photography before get them the most expesinve body and lens you will be prefer used body, older lens, doesn't you? From other hand you can be sure that this angle is for you etc.

Best wished for all!

I'm waiting for your suggestions. I hope this thread help begginers and people without a lot of money to make journey with Pentax.

A lot of time we can hear that Pentax has the best portfolio of legacy lens. I see many of them for small money. Of course comparing old design to new design a lot of times it is asking about troubles on the most demanding condition, it is lost new coating, AW/WR, lack in AF (if it is any!), but sometimes you have to spend a lot of money on studying, repair house after huracane or simply at the specified time you do not have a lot money to buy the most pricey Pentax lens.

So what you will recommend with specific conditions?
1. The least price as possible (less is better)
2. Good IQ on K1 II full frame
3. It is quite common lens and not extra rare item
4. Only K mount (without reduction like M42 lenses)

For me king with this conditions is Pentax M 50/1.7. It has good IQ (Image Quality) on modern full frame. It is fast what get a lot of option. It is very popular lens so you can get it without a lot of troubles.

What is your experience and recommendation?

Postscriptum. I start testing Sigma 28/2.8 too, but at the moment I can say a lot of about it. First impression are very good, but it is too early for recommend it.

I read a lot good review about yours 15-30 len, but in standard you have not filter mount. I think you use some adapter. As I made research adapter + filter is cost about 30% price of new lens. It is why I delete it from "I need this" and it is why I wrote about filter mount. NISI kit in my country cost about 90-95% price of this lens!

Use AF button, Auto ISO, try spot AF and recompose frame technique, check in your program what exposure is suggested (in same place I have constant +0,7EV needed as my Capture One suggested), if you use Pentax lenses set in menu MTF mode and try shots with auto mode. First use as more automatic as you can. I from start avoided and it was my primary mistake when I shoot my kids.

For low budget and very low light sitation use Pentax M 50/1.7. Better lens, better options, but on the first concetrate on remove unnecessary element of your pictures and go on! Take a lot with this simple rule in mind.

I hope I help.

I understand your point. I am generally speaking about about inversality of lens. Of course you can take greats shots without filter mount, but when you have a lot of windows in city or want very long exposure time polariser an ND filter is a lot of time only option.

AF is only use when you like shoot people inhouse for me. I prefer have it and use MF in place only one option. For me more universality is better.

At this field only disadventage of wide angle lenses are that if you want AF are limited to 15-30 and as it is without filter mount it is useless for photography. Buying adapter for about 20-25% price of lens is not way which I want to go. You have right that usins sensor is only possible with full frame lens, but now I am looking for the most rational use of K1 II crop mode if you do not buy APS-C lens earlier.

After few days I will be have K1 II body so I do that as you advice.

What len are you use for this shots? I can say I am impressed. I expected lower resolution and that crop mode is more like marketing toy. After last update for crop Pentax 11-18/2.8 I wonder that it is not make sense buy APS-C wide angle len to use with K1 (as I have K3 II too) as about 300 gram lower and with filter mount in comparition to Pentax 15-30 WR.

I read thread about crop on K1. After that I start intersting about how crop mode lens will be usefull or not with K1 II.

1. Is a change to noise in comparision to K3 II which I have?
2. How much IQ is affected?
3. For what it can be use in reality?

For me it is marketing thing for people who have a lot of APS-C lens and it is good that Pentax get them ability to use their lens, but what for other? For me it is not usefull, because glass optimilised for APS-C get worst resolution to part of sensor, but maybe I am wrong. What do you think?

Two bodies APS & FF best mobile lens setup

For me weight is not all, because I can not spend every day for hiking and mountaineering. I am limited by mi kids, work etc. For reality I will be spend few times a year on this. I know how look hiking with light K200D, 50/1.7, 28/2.8 and 135/2.8 lenses when it was very light at all in comparasion to FF lenses and body. On the top of hill I think about something throw away and after finish climbing only what I will skip on the next time. Dear Pentaxian, the best choice in the term of weight is compact camera or waterproof telephone, but it is not option.

Yes, I know that larger compact camera called this days mirroless is trendy, but I like old school feel when you look throught DSLR periskope and you will see world via your lens. It is very nice feeling when you press button and at the finale you has outstanding nature picture without city noise as reward for your exhaustion. Physicall condition is key for traveling, because Pentax is heavy ligue of bodies. When I was in archeological museum I spend half a day taking shots of BC stuff and I can feel a litle weight of body when I am climbing on view tower.

At the summary I think that larger angle than 15mm APSC it is not make sense, because panoramas are very limitated photography. Without them on the front you it is very hard use them on daily life. So choice is very limited. I need analyse APS-C for landscapes (=less weight) or better dynamic of FF.

It is a good idea. I have to tested in the field K1 to get information how really is heavy when hiking and walking for longer time. It will be importand to make final decision, but for now 24-70 WR looks like a good compromise. 55-300 is too dark for me. I want extra light, because a lot of times it was crucial for my shots, because of depth of field I use as peudomacro.

Thank you guys for your suggestions and answers!

It is what exactly I am going to do!

I am looking for the best lens matching my needs. After 14 hours in mountains any gram weight tone, but I have to go to compromise. Pentax 15-30 is too large and filters and cumbersome. For size is it too limited. I all pack in Retrospective Thinktank bag to go it with me in car. I start with universal len in my mind, but now I'm thinking what can I get from FF wide angle the same lens vs crop wide angle lens on the same degree of view in real life?

I am interesting:
1. possibility shoot on the rain and snow without headeach that I damage lens and camera
2. filter to use polariser and ND creatively
3. weight below 1 kilos (it should be nice 200g, but I can not find any solutions with WR and 20-40 zoom limited is not very interesting option for angle)

I am not looking for wide angle in both bodies, but I am looking for not duplicate solution fx (47mm on APS-C, 50mm with crop factor on FF). It is not problem for me get 70mm on the end in zoom if I can
get wide angle on beggining range. In reality I am looking more for FF lens to use with APS-C and FF bodies and get longer lens throught crop factor 1,5x on APS-C. I am open to another solution.

It is simple thing. If it is nightmare weather in mountain and temperature above 10 Celcius degree I has two bodies on me. If I see nice weather I swich on one body to 77 limited or 100 to get macro or portrait feature. If I see more interesting landscape than macro I switch to wide angle. At the end if I find more interesting distance subject - teleconverter with 100 macro or if I plan short hiking / walking below 10 kilometers in not demanding terraing telephoto len. On APS-C ~16mm or 28 on FF from crop factor is optimal choice. The best choice for angle is about 15mm, but when I think in perspective weight of 15-30 mm FF angle I can live with 28mm FF as optimal choice.

I do not want changing lens when I am in terrain. It would be nice get another angle to more creative stuff by simple changing them on bodies before I start to go.

Dear Pentaxians!

I am waiting for second body K1 II. I have K3 II. Currently I have new type Pentax 100 WR and 77 Limited lenses. My target is complete my setup to get comfort when I get it with me. For my telephoto on list I have Pentax 70-200 AW, but I am stuck with wide angle len what choose?

My dream is:
  1. no problem with shooting on rain and snow

  2. light weight

  3. compact size

  4. compatible with Full Frame and APS-C

  5. no doubling view angle with my currents lens (it must be unique and not similar for what I have)

  6. It is len for landscape and hiking and to document more dynamic actions with wide angle (dancing, singing, playing games)

  7. Prefered brand is Pentax, but is not necessary

  8. Autofocus is needed

  9. Filter mount is necessary - compatibility out box with polarizer and ND

  10. IQ is what interesting me

  11. My prefered angle is above 10mm and below 40mm, optimal will be something like 15-18mm.

  12. Zoom or prime is not matter

I think about 15/4 Limited but is only compatible with AFS-C and no sealing. After few day research my choice is Pentax 24-70/2.8. But maybe you can show me better choice?

My plan is use both bodies simultanously. When I attach len to other body I will get new possibilities fx. for short tele I attach lens to APS-C and for portrait in room to K1 II. At this scenario fx. I am walking in mountaint with bodies attaches to my bag on chest and when I need landscape choose one, when macro - get second.

Pentax not for shooting kids

Thank you for all yours response. I add this topic to forum, because taking kids photos is crucial for a lot of photographers. But I'm skip introduction and go on further.

As I start with Nikon F65 and has analog Pentax in hands I can only say that old manul body without digital feautures has a lot of adventages like split prism. Make photos sharp it was easier in manual mode for me than on newer cameras. I skip here subject change focusing screen, because you can not to it on all new bodies like K1 series. It is guarantee issue too. You can lost it after that.

For start I has only two lens 100 WR new Pentax and 77 limited for working with kids. It is not business, but more family documentation time. I like taking photos. I do not make it for living and I can spend more time to learn new techniques. SDM lens is good idea, but now I am out of budget. From other hand I am looking for the lightest lens, because when my kids will grow up I want go with them to mountains. At this situation all grams matters. My target is get the smallest possible number of lens and make them universal fx. use one len as tele on APS-C and portrait on FF body. I want the most specific job - get all stuff which I have on journey and taking photos without pain in my back. I hate on this scenario change lens too often. I tried it with old manual lens fx. 28mm, 50mm in mountain and it was nightmare. I spend more time with changing lens than taking shots.

After 2 thousand pictures with AFC I can say that AFS is better on K3 II for small children in dark rooms. It easier to get focus. I use SEL (one point only focus), but the most time I take photos with the most demanding situation - very low light and F1.8, F2. At this situation any mistake in focus and picture can be lost. On daylight I do not have a lot of troubles with 77. I start feeling it. Except small detail I'm not comfortable with my macro 100mm len. I am learning how use in out macro scenario.

My current plan is use 77 limited on K1 II and 100mm macro as backup fx. more distance shoots on APS-C. It is crazy idea, but I would try use them together at the same time (of course with changing body with lens for shots).

On my previous post I wrote about unfocus when I take photos with AF point SEL (one only) selected and targeted on eye and when light is low (it is my specific situation - when I go to home is night). From medic reason I can not use full light when I take shots my newbord kids, because of their specific health condition. In the future I expect that they will be more mobile and it is why I ask you dear Pentaxian!

At my 5c I think marketing is huge reason why people changing bodies. I know people which take photos in masses and get another system because they want new lens, AF and some fancy stuff. As I wrote before. It is really strange that bodies I splitted on categories for sport, landscape etc., because the most of them minus Live view modes like eye focusing is still old fashion design without nothing spectacular. Difference I see in buttons and sensors, but outside that I can not find any spectacular change. Using DSLR in Live mode it is outside specific situation when fx. you do not want lay down is like back to compact camera for me. Maybe I am old fashion by I am looking for in the future bodies with manual working comfort like in old film cameras without film, but with its dynamics and possibilities.

OK. I ended offtopic here.

After my two initial question how succefully take photos of kids and is it possible I will be add one to:

3. How 100 macro and 77 limited has adventage or disadventage on the field taking kids photo? Have you any experience?

My observations:
77 limited - not very good for small space in room and when you want document few people around kids on APS-C body (K3 II). It is too narrow. In low light in AFC likes missing. ISO above 3200 limited IQ on eyes and it is what you can see. It is good lens, but outside or in large space behind you. In other place you have to use very strange angles to get frame. It is more selectable in composition. Maybe troublesome in small space when kids crawling to you.

100 macro - good for detail. It is a pleasure take face with toys in small space. It is not limitation, but it is very narrow degree in composition. It is hard to use it for kids in home with another person. Without large space behind is that not possible. It is great choice for smile or eye details.

Those wishing to photograph sports, action or active children

I found in few review K1 mark II that is not for taking photos active kids. I am waiting for deliver this body. I have K3 II body too and I want ask Pentaxian really Pentax is not for shooting active kids? I write "active", because I take a lot of portraits and with my body is not problem. If children is more static I do not see really problem. With AFS I get a lof in focus photos. AFC in the most times is not effective. On small face newbord or small kids I get with 77 limited nose, ear etc. So at the summary I want ask about:

1. Is really if you want take shots with kids playing in soccer, dancing, performing live art, playing art in school theatre and similar Pentax is not good for this? I found information that change system if you want this types of photos, but for me is crazy. I know AF is still Achilles' heel, but I was happy with static photos of landscape, nature etc and I want not change system. So how it looks like from yours experience? I will be in the near future take a lof ot this types photography.

2. What tricks except high ISO, adding light to scene use to get in focus sharp photos from dynamic actions with kids can you advice?

Thank you for your sharing!

Hi Pentaxians!

I want buy my first and budget tripod.

I would use them with: Pentax K3 II + grip and Pentax lens: 77/1.8 ltd and 100/2.8 macro. Because I don't have a lot of money I have to limit target price. I want 3-way head and tripod on price around 90 $. My another expectations: tilt front/back -30/+90, right/left - 30, +90 degree, lift enought to work with my camera and lens. It will be nice if I could use flash 540 FGZ with it, but it is not necessary. Total tripod weight is not issue, because is more stationary move to another location with car, but more times try astrophotography around home, bugs and flowers with wired trigger etc. so weight below 20 kg, and better less than 10 kg will be optimal for me. Tripod material is for me neutral. I don't want walk them more than half kilometer from car. Probably the most used position will be camera 1,5m above ground ( I'm 1,9m tall).

On the future I want buy better tripod after buying good telephoto lens so now is not problem if not lift more than I write above. I think it is optimal tripod on this price with my expectations, but I have questions:

1. Could you recommended better tripod with head for similar price?
2. Is it enought to safe work with my equipment?

It is very interesting that Olympus and Sony went to market and how it's gone popular. I remember times where it was a niche. Polish website photography oriented Optyczne.pl made resolution test and compare K1 II, D850 and A7R III:

https://www.optyczne.pl/398.4-Test_aparatu-Pentax_K-1_II_Rozdzielczość.html

When you scroll down you get MTF50 selfexplained picture with result for Sigma A 35 mm f/1.4 on this cameras. On picture K1 II is lower about 10 lpmm. In real life for me it is not big deal and is not make difference, but in press is looks bad. I think if Pentax create the fastest sport camera on the market and add extreme fast lens for sport it will be notice. I can change system but solid WR body and comfort of body use I found only in Pentax. It is a hobby. If I am going to be professional I will be choose Nikon or Canon because in company It is better chance that I can find someone with compatible equipment like lens from photoreporters in press etc.
