Seems like Ricoh is happy with this trio. Strange... I think Ricoh would get more money by just refreshing these two rather than adding another one. I would do everything to buy refreshed 16-50 and 50-135!

"Equivalence" between formats and lenses...

After some time shooting with my K3 and current lenses, I realized I need faster lens to shoot in low light, to have more power to isolate subject, to simply get full potential out of K3's sensor to try portraits in really pro way. I started hunting for full frame lenses as I suddenly got a very nice opportunity to get K-1 in near future. So the term "equivalent" became first thing looking at some lenses. As my goal was to get the lens ideal for portrait work, I chose 50mm (75mm equivalent on FF) close to ideal 85mm. I bought D FA* 50mm. Although I'm very happy with my choice, and you guys already know that it's decent lens, its image quality will never be same as on full frame K-1. I have achieved what I wanted regarding FOV, low light capability, amazing DOF and great edge to edge sharpness wide open, but I will never get a crisp resolution and dynamic range as it can be on full frame. So imho, there is no equivalence. If it is, its equivalence doesn't cover everything. Each system has its own advantages.

Is it my imagination that photo files loose sharpness going from camera to computer?

Always check your shot at 100% view on the camera LCD. Of course if you need it to be as sharp as possible. There are situations when you have no time for this but when you do it is worth checking.

First thing what I would investigate is if a shutter speed was too slow, then if there was front or back focus, then whether IBIS was turned on.

Why the hell I should talk to someone who replies like that on a very simple question "do you recommend" - I don't know but ok. Cheap does not always mean garbage. and that is one of reasons why forum exists where people ask each other and exchange with their opinions. I have enough experience to know that putting just anything in front of your lens will degrade image quality. Question is how much, and every true Pentaxian knows what acceptable quality mean by the way.

Thanks for your help

If my Pentax gear somehow will not satisfy my needs in auto focus area I'll do everything not to sell whole system but keep it and buy something that will to it better. but it's my subjective opition, not saying OP is doing something wrong.

K3-II + DFA 50 + Pixel Shift Resolution

Well. yes and no :) of course image taken with pixel shift will be always better overall but what I'm trying to tell is that you "help" sensor to gain more details not the lens itself. So when someone says pixel shift image is sharper it's irrelevant because you link the sharpness to lens in the first place.

Yep, that's what I mean. In other words, pixel shift resolution doesn't improve lens performance regarding sharpness, it just adds extra resolution, details to the image.

I'm just pushing my K3-II's sensor to its limits because K1-II is on the horizon :)

I rarely use this feature but it's very handy when you need more resolution. I see lots of pictures with K-1 and DFA* 50 combo but not so much with crop body so if anyone is wondering...

There may be better results with more steady situation but....

Focus mode: Spot
White Balance: Cloudy (forgot it to change)
Shutter Speed: 1/4s
ISO: 100
Apperture: f/4
Distance: ~1 meter.
Focus Point: between toys

Original

Crop

Many refer pixel shift resolution to sharpness but imho it's incorrect.

Of course DFA is superior in all aspects. But it's technically better than anything. Just compare its edge sharpness at 1.4 with anything, It was just an answer for today's standards and even exceeds it. But I agree, older lenses had special character though.

I always clean bayonet and lens mount because these are main sources of dust and other particles for the sensor

Luke, if you are about to get this lens for K3 and not sure yet here is what I think.

Firts off, popular part - the weight. As everyone who got this lens said that the lens is heavy, yes it's heavy but I can tell it's very well balanced even on K3 body despite the fact that it's almost 200 grams lighter than K-1. I was afraid that it could be front heavy but no. Holding K3 with this bad boy attached is just pleasure. Immediately makes you someone serious with a special goal.

Autofocus. At the beggining, I thought something is wrong with AF at large apertures but now I think it's a matter of time and I will get used to. Another important aspect I learned so far with this lens regarding autofocus accuracy is that it focuses much better with spot mode, not select single point at center but spot. Other than that, very fast, very quiet and pleasing autofocus. Manual focus is also great.

Picture quality. No doubt here, absolute winner, amazing colors, great bokeh, sharp as blade but you will never get a resolution K-1 can produce with this lens, and I don't mean only megapixels. Say DFA* 85mm with K-1 will be always better than DFA* 50mm with K-3.

If my budget will let me to this I will definitely buy DFA* 85mm when it comes out because at that time I'll be playing with K-1 :)

Agree! I think bad battery can also create some residue on the contacts which may be very difficult to clean.

Having ultra clean contacts is vital! Recently I had the flash attached to my K3 and it didn't fire, although it was synced with body because when I was half pressing the shutter it was responding. I removed it and looked at contacts, didn't find any moisture but anyway I cleaned it with alcohol and it worked again. Seems like there was some sort of invisible, thin layer of something.
