This is a shot of artwork made from bed springs, assorted bottles and stained glass shards by a New Mexican woman who is about 80 years old. I thought it was quite innovative. Taken with the K-3 and the 18-135 WR.

This is a shot of the rugged Organ Mountains, near Las Cruces, New Mexico. My maternal grandfather once prospected these mountains around the turn of the 20th Century. I took the picture shortly after dawn to emphasize the mountains' shadows.

Is the Pentax K5 still a good option ?

While I own a K-3 and love it, I still kept my K-5 for its low-light resolution. I get good results up to ISO 3200. Recently, we took a trip to the Phoenix Zoo at night to view their "Zoo lights" Christmastime celebration. Instead of the K-3, I opted for the K-5, and just kept the kit lens 18-55 WR on it. Here is a sample shot of some of the light displays as viewed across a lake on the zoo premises. I used the level feature to be sure of the camera's orientation, as there was no horizon to reckon the view. This is still a great camera, and I value it as a backup to the K-3 and for even better performance in low light, particularly when shooting in RAW, as this picture was. Shot hand-held.

This crow was enviously watching us eat our Thanksgiving dinner in Prescott, Arizona. Taken with the K-3 and the SMC-DA 18-135mm.

The contrast of this beautiful flower in the midst of a tangle of rough foliage struck me as a fit subject to capture with the superb 100mm macro. I used the TAV setting on the K-3 to get both the ideal depth of field I wanted and the control of any camera movement, as this was hand-held.

This was taken as an abstract shot with the K-3 and the Pentax 18-135. It's the ceiling of the rotunda at the New Mexico state capitol in Santa Fe.

This is a picture I took of a 60-year-old Ruger .44 Magnum revolver for an article I've written. The 35mm macro ltd. is amazingly sharp and shows the tiniest detail. It's my "go-to" lens with my K-3 for illustrations.

Continuing our observations on the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, here's a shot I took of the main lobby with the K-5 and the 18-135 in 2011. The old hotel just reeks of history and class.

I took this shot of some candles at my granddaughter's wedding in Santa Fe, NM this weekend. I was struck by the composition. The 18-135 is way versatile, and it was my only lens at the wedding.

That's a shame. I'm a current subscriber to Pop Photo, and my dad subscribed from the 1950s until his passing in 1987. I canceled my subscription to a competing magazine (Shutterbug) several years ago, because it was wall-to-wall advertising, and had very little in the way of useful information. This is the end of an era.

About a week ago I attended a street fair in the old Phoenix neighborhood where my wife and I were kids. The 18-135 was the only lens I used to take some pics of the many classic cars that were on display. Here are a few.

A 1956 Ford Fairlane:

A 1955 Chevy Bel Air:

A 1930 Hudson:

A 1969 El Camino Super Sport:

A rather abstract shot of the open hood on a 1965 427 Sting Ray Corvette:

A 1965 Pontiac GTO:

A ready-to-race AC Cobra:

A 1959 Corvette:

A French Citroen 2CV - known as the French VW bug, and just as ugly.

This last one is a pic of the very rare Volksrolet:

Here's another firearms picture I took with the SMC-DA 35mm Macro Ltd. These two pistols were manufactured 66 years apart. The top one is a Ruger Standard .22 pistol, manufactured in mid-1950. It's one of the very first guns made by Sturm, Ruger and Co. The bottom one is the evolved Ruger Mark IV target pistol, made in 2016. You can see the family resemblance.

Taken in the old copper mining town of Bisbee, Arizona - the buildings on main street are over 100 years old. This building houses the post office on the first floor, and the city library on the two upper floors. The fireplug saved this building from a disastrous fire in 1908. The building still serves its original purposes today. I kept the perspective distortion instead of modifying it in post to draw more attention to the fireplug. Conversion to sepia to give an old-time flavor, and color extraction for the plug.

This shot was taken from the west coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui, looking towards the island of Lanai at sunset. The moored boats gave a nice foreground accent to the dramatic clouds.

This old gentleman was sitting on the veranda of the century-old Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee, Arizona, rolling his own cigarette while drinking a cup of black coffee. I asked his permission to take a photo of him, and he assented. You can see a world of experience in those eyes.

I was attempting to help him, ma'am, by showing the difference in the quality of the red rendering when the lens is stopped down. If I have offended your sensibilities in any way by posting an illustrative picture, please accept my profound and sincere apologies.

Have a nice day.
