Yep, I definitely like this one better. Indeed the K-1 sensor shines for work such as this.

I would see the 70-200 f4 serving as a lower cost alternative to the DFA 70-200 f2.8 but also as a faster-focusing alternative to the DA*60-250 for APS shooters.

It seems there is a demand, as the lens is on the roadmap and has been acknowledged as being in work but delayed, so I still expect it before any of the wides...

Interesting. I presume that normal AF which moves heavy lens groups is slowed to some extent by inertia, particularly if it has to move the lens group backwards and forwards. Maybe a new system would involve the AF movement of the lens group to the approximate position while moving the sensor would allow a fast and accurate final adjustment. (Just my 'stream of consciousness' at work. There may be a hundred reasons why this would not be workable or fast.)

Well, to go back... slighly on the topic ^^
We still don't know what mechanism is activated by the mystery button !
We suppose the AF is way better, but I don't see why it should need a button for it.
So ? The switch between OVF and some sort of EVF, possibly not with same functionalities than others, but however something between ?

Ricoh's financial results for Q2 - Pentax still not doomed.

So, it seems to me that Ricoh is taking a very conservative approach to the Pentax brand, enough so that they don't even bother to mention it specifically by name in these reports. While some seem to take this as sign that Ricoh is ready to abandon the brand, I take it as the opposite.

Pentax as a brand name and a collection of technology (lens mount, optical designs, and other patents), will always maintain a steady, if small, value that is probably more worthwhile to hang onto, even if it appears to be at a small loss when only considering the expense/income related directly to Pentax. However, we know that Pentax is not an isolated economy, and is only a small part of a larger imaging division, within an even larger company. This means that R&D and manufacturing costs for Pentax products don't need to be recouped by the Pentax brand alone, and that propriety tech and materials can actually be shared between Pentax and Ricoh's other optical products, like how the GRIII borrows heavily from Pentax DSLRs.

With this in mind, and the assumption that Ricoh is an intelligent and efficient company, we can assume that they are not wasting resources on Pentax, and that they are probably subsidising the brand in order to keep their only tap in the ILC market open, which brings in that little bit of steady income to help fund their more profitable ventures. If they abandoned the ILC market entirely, they would lose that window that could potentially be opened wider in the future when the camera market isn't so volatile. The effort to design and release a new lens mount and camera system in a saturated market is very risky, but if they keep Pentax on life-support long enough to turn in a big profit in other divisions, then they'll already have a system to inject with adrenaline in an effort to retake a larger market share, or at least a more profitable one (like Leica).

So, in conclusion, I think the fact that Ricoh barely even seems to mention Pentax is a sign that selling or abandoning the brand isn't even on the table. R&D and manufacturing costs are kept low, new releases are kept slow, but regular enough to appease fans, and all expenses/profits are rolled directly into the imaging division, which itself is maintaining a conservative but healthy growth. Ricoh is doing the smart thing by diversifying their investments, and while it's arguable if they're doing enough to prevent further loss of market share, at least they're clearly not worried about the brand at this moment. Who knows, maybe 10 years from now Canon and Nikon will have majorly slipped because they invested too heavily in mirrorless ILCs, and tried too hard to maintain DSLRs concurrently, and meanwhile GR and Theta sales could have brought Ricoh into a position where they can place a new stranglehold on the OVF market at minimal financial risk. If Ricoh dropped Pentax now, that simply wouldn't be an option 10 years from now.

K-1 wide lenses

The Op's original comment was discovering the "hard way" of buying a 2.8 Tamron lens that does not cover the K-1 full frame, so I am assuming he has a K-1, and would thus have to use any lens having 10mm capability on a K-1 set to crop mode. This is one advantage of the K-1 over many other FF models- the ability to make that switch. There is certainly nothing wrong with doing this, image quality is still very high, and the lens will be capable of providing an extremely wide angle shot. As wide angle as would the DFA 15-30mm used FF on the K-1. So if his business requirement is to have a lens with a 10mm FL, The Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 lens I recommend would do very nicely. It delivers very fine image quality, is very well built, has very good, quiet AF performance, a convenient AF/MF switch, and is not expensive. Hard to beat this combo.

He also mentioned the K-3, but perhaps he does not have this model.

If you're planning on getting (or already have) a K-1, just get the DFA15-30. It's a killer real estate lens. Or get a crop camera and the Sigma 10-20. They'll both give you exactly the same field of view.

You seem to be getting a little muddled about the crop factor. Have a look at this video before you post again :)

The Sigma DG 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 is extremely wide (like an 8-16 on APS-C) and absolutely not fisheye. However, it's only available used and not easy to get.

The Rokinon/Samyang 14/2.8 is also very nice on the K-1, is inexpensive, but it's not auto-focus

P.S. I may be wrong, but I don't think any makes a non-fisheye 10mm for full frame.

The other day I was shooting with my MX...

I kept looking at the film label pocket on the back of the camera like it was supposed to say something other than “Fuji 400”

But I do dig the screen on the K-1... very handy sometimes...

I wonder why Ricoh would bother with making and showcasing at least three elaborate (and identical) copies with a fixed screen if the production camera were to have a moveable screen. A moveable screen is not something that would so much single the Pentax K-New out from its peers that Ricoh would keep it a secret until announcement day.

I'd rather say Ricoh Imaging executives are polite enough not to bluntly say 'No, the production camera won't have a moveable screen' to their asking visitor.

Alternatively, Ricoh are doing damage control and, confronted with people's reaction to the showcased K-New, asked the designers to go back to the drawing board and add a moveable screen to the final camera. Be prepared to at least a one-year delay if this were the case.

One final thought on this: in the sentence 'staff tell me this is not the final model for mass product, so who think the back screen will be unable to pull out can rest assured now', the first part 'staff tell me this is not the final model for mass product' reports what staff said and is actually stating the obvious (the showcased cameras aren't production models) but the second part 'so who think the back screen will be unable to pull out can rest assured now' looks very much like a deduction made by Karen the Star alone, not a hint given by staff.

The links are dead. Try this alternative website: Japan Platform for Patent Information|J-PlatPat [JPP] If a page in Japanese appears, click on 'English' on the very top of the page, a bit on the right side.

Copy the patents' publication numbers (2016-12094 for the first one and 2018-151588 for the second one) and click on the Search button. In the new page, click on the hyperlink with the same number as above under 'Publication number'. A new page ill open. Close 'Bibliography' on the left to speed up the process and browse the drawings on the right.

Thinking about the proximity sensor below the viewfinder and what it could be used for.
1) To start the AF system (like Minolta Maxxums once did)
2) To Blank the rear screen so as to not interfere with the viewfinder
3) To disable a touch sensitive rear LCD
4) To Switch between the rear LCD and a hybrid EVF when in Live View mode.

I’ve ranked them in the order of what I would wish for with 4 being the best. 1 and 2 would be a complete disappointment. 3 would be good but not a deal breaker. So my personal hope is for 4. I mean after all it looks like the return of the stovepipe from the K-01 if that isnt a hint from Ricoh then what is? ;)

RICOH ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF HD PENTAX-D FA★50mm F1.4 SDM AW STAR-SERIES LENS

I have said before and I will say again, DP Review is a lost cause. They just aren't interested in traditional SLRs any more, don't put a premium on still image quality (even though it is the real reason that most folks purchase cameras), emphasize small size, and are willing to let other brand's RAW adjustments slide, even while holding Pentax's feet to the fire with respect to the accelerator. And there is a strong feeling of animosity between some of the reviewers (Rishi in particular) and Pentaxians. It often isn't just what is said in a review, but the snide way in which it is said that indicates that DP Review's reviewers believe that Pentax is a lesser brand and not really worthy of their attention.

That said, all is not lost. By all indications next year should be a better year. DFA 85 and DFA 70-200 probably coming then along with the K3 II sequel. Those things alone should stir up excitement a bit (we've already seen the results of a prototype with no specs on the Forum). Ricoh is not losing market share (unlike some others) and with the down turn in the camera market, it is hard to throw serious investment but rather to do slow and steady development of both cameras and lenses. They are staying the course, although that probably means little investment in marketing outside of Japan.

This is what frustrates some users. Pentax is a small brand but Ricoh is a large company. They could invest more in Pentax but by not doing so it makes many believe there is no future. But is seems to me that the steady, if glacially slow, release of products over the past few years indicates just a very cautious commitment to Pentax but a commitment none the less.

I'm not sure what you mean by this remark. My post specifically asks people to speculate on what they think the button does by assuming there is no articulating screen. The button is unlabelled and Pentax clearly has something they want to keep as a suprise. What's the harm in speculating on what that function might be? After all, this is a discussion forum.

As for the raffle, this reply is only my second post for the month so I'm making a poor effort to win a prize.

I would assume it's short for "function set" meaning it selects what the third wheel actually does. In my mind, you would hold down that button while turning the third wheel, and on the display (and top display) different variables like ISO, exposure compensation etc would rotate, and then when you let go of that button, turning the wheel will modify that variable.

The model they have shown evidently has a fixed screen as there is no mechanically sound way to make it pivot (unless it's spring loaded but that would be awkward to say the least). However, I'm still irked by the the top and back plates *clearly* not being flush with each other at the left back corner. There's a ledge there for picking up grub that is most likely indicative of the good old "one piece is final, the other is not". I'm betting on some changes to the outer shell from now to final production.

I still think that until we see the final product any and all discussions here are academic at best.

Usually, these drawings are drawn with magnification or exaggeration of key points.

The important point is that the previous indicators were straight, but the hybrid viewfinder did not come out in front of the condenser lens.

This is consistent with the new body's head not sticking out more than before.

1. Contrast af patent using light meter

2. Patent of pentaprism with small phase difference between s-polarized light and p-polarized light with large incident angle
-Patent for 1

3. Patented matte screen that can increase the amount of light by applying a specific pattern

4. Half mirror device patent with little color change

5. Patent to simplify and miniaturize quick return mirror shock absorber
