Also, where's the hidden lassie trying to sneak in a shower?

Always good to see the variety of your shots and the quality of your images.

Contest Something special about that lens - round 7: 70-100 mm

Time to launch the sixth edition of: Something Special About That Lens 70-100 mm

The goal of this contest is to show off some special feature of a lens, whether it is a fish eye, bokeh monster, super starbursts, perfect for reversing, super sharp, dreamy colors, super fast wide open aperture / narrow depth of field, creative use of vignetting etc. Pull out that hidden gem you haven't used in a while and find how it can enable your creativity. While members are free to like any image they like, ideally voting should be towards images that show off the special feature of the lens. Entrants are encouraged to include a short description with the image to tell what special feature they are trying to highlight.

The formal stuff:
  • 1 entry per person per month. Any brand of lens, but the photo should be taken with a Pentax or Ricoh DSLR/SLR camera.

  • PLEASE INCLUDE a short blurb explaining the special characteristics of the lens you are trying to show off

  • To enter, reply to this message and put your image in this thread.

  • The top entries (this will be adjusted based on how much interest there is each round), based on total likes, will then be voted on in a poll for the monthly prize (one 128 GB SD card, or three (3) 32 GB SD cards).

  • The 2nd - 4th place finishers in the poll voting each month will be entered into the December contest for additional prizes.

  • In the event of a tie, I will cast a tie-breaker vote, based on how I rank the images before voting on the short list begins.

This month: 70-100 mm (absolute lens focal length, don't include any crop factors - no math required!). Zoom lenses set to within this range are allowed.

Entries will close at the end of the month, but voting will continue until September 14 and then the shortlist voting poll will run for about 14 days after that.

If you have any questions and they are specific to this month please put them here, otherwise please use this thread (Something special about that lens - NEW CONTEST series - PentaxForums.com) to learn more about the origins of this contest.

FINALLY: Whether you enter or not, please go view the photos from Issue 6 (Something special about that lens - round 6: 51-69 mm - PentaxForums.com) and LIKE the ones that you think best show off a special characteristic of a lens. To that extent, credit should be given for those who included a short blurb about their images as befitting the purpose of this contest.

Agreed and I'm usually a lot more proactive about promoting previous winners and new rounds. I've largely been off the forums at a time that wasn't great for the contest.

I hear you, although most might argue the DA*55 is by default a special lens. I'll see if there are any more entries coming and then figure out the next steps forward as well as kickstarting things overall.
I also expected a lot of Helios entries, a lens that is craved for its bokeh and comes in so many flavors and variations that each have their own special characteristics.

Not a competition at all. He has his style and you have yours and there is a lot to like in your images. Besides, it isn't Mr Rankin's model photography that has me jealous - it is his landscapes!

A 50mm Macro lens is fine for this round.
Any brand of lens is fine, as long as the photo was taken on a Pentax/Ricoh camera

I once did something like that with two types of extension tubes and a Helios or Tak lens on the front (but nothing reversed) taking shots outdoors, and I started getting dirty looks from people who thought I was taking paparazzi shots of kids at a local school even though I couldn't focus on anything more than a centimeter or two away.

Thanks to all who participated. I hope this contest has made you think about some of your (perhaps less often used) lenses in a different light. Please feel free to message me with any feedback you have.

Without any further ado, here are the entries to vote on. Please remember that voting should reflect not just an interesting image, but one that shows off the special characteristics of the lens.

Some interesting comparisons between zooms and fixed focal lengths, 645 and DSLR images, and similar scenes using different formats.

*** Following last month's tie and Adam's suggestion of needing a tie breaker, I have ranked the images myself before all the votes are cast, and will cast a tie breaking vote if this becomes necessary ***

Voting ends June 27.

#1 A lens that is incredible and massive. Razor sharp all over the frame, silent and rapid AF and stunning colour rendition.

#2 A lens that is incredibly sharp and has fantastic contrast when shooting in black and white, and great for street style shooting as the focus is really fast and its incredibly small so people don’t get freaked out that you are taking photos.

#3 An ideal lens for the golden hour on the ocean as it renders those colors extremely well.

#4 One my favorite lenses; tack sharp and nice warm colors. Outstanding for Golden Hour shots.

#5 .A lens that has the limited properties, but it is a sharper lens than my 15. The lens is fun to use because it just gets results, limited by only my abilities.

So you did. I guess I see people (including myself) treat the 1.7 and 2.0 different, since there is some truth that the former are useful wide open, while the latter are best used stopped down (for the M/A variations, although the Takumar 50 are a different story)

Keep this up and I'll invite @Kerrowdown to come name every fifty we can think of. I take your point of view, but I really was just using Nifty Fifty more in relation to the focal length and its history as "normal" than any particular lens. I'm also disappointed you didn't include the 50/2.0 in that list since they really are quite common in the A variety. ;)

Sounds perfect. This contest isn't so much about nice lenses as showing off a special aspect of a lens. So maybe there is something your zoom can do better than the 55 :)

I'm afraid it will have to wait until the next month. I thought hard about the ranges before I set up the contest and for the reasons mentioned above I wanted to have a month just dedicated to 50s. While I realize this excludes the lens you mention it also excludes the DA* 55. There are so many 50s out there, from the Tak 50/1.4 8 element, to the 50/1.2 to lesser known lenses like the Industar 50/2.8, as well as macro 50 etc etc. I really want to see how all these lenses could be used in this sort of contest at least for this version. If I run this again next year - something I'll evaluate towards the end of the year - I'll certainly consider all suggestions for how to improve the contest and broaden its appeal.

Time to launch the fifth edition of: Something Special About That Lens

The goal of this contest is to show off some special feature of a lens, whether it is a fish eye, bokeh monster, super starbursts, perfect for reversing, super sharp, dreamy colors, super fast wide open aperture / narrow depth of field, creative use of vignetting etc. Pull out that hidden gem you haven't used in a while and find how it can enable your creativity. While members are free to like any image they like, ideally voting should be towards images that show off the special feature of the lens.

  • Contest winners will be asked for a brief blog post describing the technique you used to shoot and process your photo, as well as what equipment you used. Additional information about the lens and how and when you tend to use it will be most welcome.

This month: 50mm (absolute lens focal length, don't include any crop factors - no math required!). Zoom lenses set to 50 are allowed, but I challenge everyone to show off a lesser used or less thought of 50 mm lens in a special way! Many of these lenses are common and inexpensive and often the first manual lens a person will buy after they get started so I hope to see a lot of entries.

Entries will close at the end of the month, but voting will continue until July 15 and then the shortlist voting poll will run for 14 days after that.

If you have any questions and they are specific to this month please put them here, otherwise please use this thread (Something special about that lens - NEW CONTEST series - PentaxForums.com) to learn more about the origins of this contest.

Before anyone votes and creates a tie, I'll draw this to a close and declare SpecialK the winner.

Now for the backstory: The plane does (well did...) belong to my son, but the crash in question was likely due to his piloting errors. However, his memories of the day have less to do with the plane, and more to do with his claims of my trying to decapitate him with a boomerang, which is what I was playing with at the time. I don't recall any intentions in the errant throw that perhaps got a little too close to him, but unless his plane in the tree, the boomerang did not make contact.

Thank you so much. That's a really good question. I always try to enter the focal length so I can at least guess at the lens. But in this case I must have been using a tripod and so it didn't require the focal length for shake reduction. Since the aperture wasn't recorded, it most likely wasn't my A35-105, but was probably either a Tak 50/1.4 or Helios 58.

---------- Post added 06-01-21 at 07:30 PM ----------

I will go back to when I shot this and look at whether photos just before or after have the focal length and if I find something I'll let you know.
