The last piston powered Unlimited on the circuit powered by a dual turbocharged Allison V-12. Ed has quite a few of these engines to keep his boat racing.

Check the small phillips screws that attach the lens mount to the camera. I had focusing issues with my K-3 and DA* 60-250mm lens. It turned out to be that mounting ring was slightly loose. I lightly tightened those screws and have not had that issue since. Now every so often I check those screws to insure they haven't loosened up again.

Thanks! I was a bit skeptical Saturday when I first used it but I read too many positive reviews on the T/C so I kept after it. I had to run the f-stop up to f-14 to f-16 and to top things off I found that at full zoom the image would soften but if I backed off of full zoom just a tad the sharpness returned. By the end of the weekend I was happy with the results. I can't wait to shoot a race on a nice sunny day.

Yes it does. It took me a while to find its sweet spot but when I did I was pleased with the results. Insurance rules keep you so far away anymore every mm you can gain is a big help.

I picked up a used Pentax HD 1.4x Teleconverter From a fellow forum member and attached it to my DA* 60-250mm. It took me a while to find it's sweet spot especially since it was a very overcast weekend and I was shooting between 1000 and 4000 ISO. By the end of the weekend I was pleased with the results. The extra 100mm was nice to have.

I didn't make it to Madison, IN last week. I turned my foot and broke the 5th metatarsal which has put me temporally out of commission. We have a Limited race coming up on the 21 & 22 that I hope to shoot. I love Racing. I got my start in the early 80's with an ME Super. This is one of the ARCA cars I worked on back then. :)

I do still follow the Unlimited's but mostly the lower ranks and Vintage Limited's and Outboards these days.

I am lucky to be able to capture Vintage Hydros that still run exhibitions. It may not be actual racing but they are still exciting.

The upper 2 RH pictures here have to be 77 or later as 77 was the first season for Bill Muncey's Blue Blaster pictured in both shots. These all look like they spanned several years in the 70's. Nice shots. They show some hydroplane history. :)

I'm a big fan myself!!! :)

---------- Post added 07-11-18 at 01:43 PM ----------

The U-95 was the first turbine powered boat. The Pay & Pak was Rolls Royce Merlin powered. It was the first honeycomb aluminum constructed hull. It was a very revolutionary hull. Both it and Bill Muncey's Blue Blaster have both been restored to running condition by the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Kent, WA. I was out there in 2010 when they started to restoration on the Blue Blaster. There are bits and pieces of the U-95 around but not enough running gear to restore it. The hull was eventually changed to piston power and is in a warehouse in Detroit if I'm not mistaken.

It's either 73, 74 or 75. The white and orange boat in the lower RH picture only ran as the Pride of Pay & Pak in 73 through 75. The Miss Bud and the Pay & Pak were big rivals back then.

My K-3 and DA* 60-250mm went Boat Racing a couple of weeks ago.

I love the combo of body and lens. It allows me a LOT of room for cropping and still maintaining an outstanding quality picture. Enjoy!!!

Check the small phillips screws that hold the lens mount to the camera body. My DA* 60-250 has acted up on my K-3 several times and each time it was caused by those screws coming slightly loose.

Some of my favorite Vintage Hydroplane shots from this past summer. All taken with my K-3 and DA* 60-250. This combo give me a lot of room for tight crops from across the river with no real loss of quality.

I've started using the back AF button on my K-3. It's made for a HUGE increase in keepers for my Boat Racing pics. I press and hold the back AF button then fire the shutter at will. The focus seems to track better doing this. These were all shot with my K-3 and DA* 60-250mm lens. They are ALL crops.

Black Rapid Double when carrying both bodies and 1/2 of the Black Rapid Double when carrying just one body. After purchasing the Black Rapid Double last spring I took the neck straps off of both bodies and haven't looked back!
