I too like the 80-320 on the K-1. I found that if I am going to use 320mm focal length it is best to fine tune AF at that length. I use a variation of the technique described here as dot tune. Been doing it ever since live view became reliable and precise. I think many people have used this method without knowing that it had been "named" as a specific approach. Kudos to the poster for giving a detailed presentation of the approach though!

Pentax K-7 shake reduction with manual zoom lenses

If you have a zoom with focal length markings like the 80-200, just compose with the zoom setting you want, note the focal length and enter it in Menu item 4 input focal length. Easy work flow. For primes, you can just enter at startup and it will remember the setting. Zooms require just that setting to maximize the SR efficiency.

I use CR-V3 lithiums in my *ist DS and they seem to last forever. Never had much luck with AAs of any type.

Using AF360FGZ II Off Camera

There are longer cords. But wireless might be the way to go. You will need two units like the AF360FGZ II since neither of your cameras have a built in flash to trigger wireless. Many here will tout the RF controllers as another option.

Glad to hear. I think that is the source of a lot of connectivity issues with the Wi-Fi interface.

Interesting guess. Usually we can look to Nikon and Sony to see what they have used in their cameras. Maybe the K-new will buck that trend.

It may be your home internet router reconnecting and knocking off the Pentax Wi-Fi. Happens to me sometimes. Wonít happen if you are away from a recognized router in the field.

I use a larger lowepro case 11 X 15 cm with a belt loop and strap. The problem is the large hood

UV Protectors?

Welcome. The protective/UV filters are great to have in dusty, windy or wet conditions. They can save your lens on impact also (Iíve broken several on camera that would have damaged the lens). That said, under normal sedate conditions I screw them off or donít bring them at all. Since you already own them, keep them for those rough conditions. I often use a polarizer for protection/outdoor photography but also remove it when not needed.

Love my K-3 as a travel camera. Paired with a versatile zoom or the DA limited lenses it is a joy.

55-300 PLM by a mile. DFA 150-450 is pretty darn fast also if you need more reach.

I think you will like the K-3. Its my only crop body that stands up well against the two FF K-1ii bodies I have. If I upgrade to the K-new crop body (forthcoming soon I hope) I will replace my K-7 but keep the trusty K-3. With the grip, it can accommodate the largest lenses, but without the grip it looks right at home with the DA limited lenses... tiny. It has a built in flash for fill, but with the GPS unit, it has all of the functionality of GPS including astrotracer. It has weathered whale-watching drenchings, falls down trails and many other hazards. Its a keeper.

Usability was improved over K20D with very similar image quality. I think you will like it. I have kept my K-7 as the crop sensor companion to the K-3. Very similar layout and ergonomics.

All reasonable requests Adam. I usually try to ignore the negative posts altogether. I suppose I belong to the old school; if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

Mine is very old but no barrel wobble. Basically the same as my 16-85 (which I see you have). Probably a simple fix but I don't know how to do it.

Yes used them for a while in DSLRs up to K-7. Fairly slow transfer and limited to JPEGs as I remember. The biggest problem is keeping up with software/hardware issues. Tied to Keenai I believe. It seems to still work but not well supported.

K-3 is ok but not great. Itís better than some other DSLRs. The Analog to Digital converter is the weak link and even an iPhone may be better for your purposes. You will probably need an adapter to go into iPhone. Most hot shoe mics will go directly into the K-3.

Ah good that it worked out. Yes marking where the screws go would be difficult. I was concerned about getting the wedges to sit properly. Thanks for the video and update.

Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 (Tamron AF 18-250 Di II) Internal Dust Removal?

The dust is unlikely to effect anything so I would advise just leaving it. It takes a lot of dust to do anything to image quality, particularly on those outer elements. I have tightened the outside screws on my Tamron 28-300 (the one shown in the linked video). The screws are small and hard to align. I also have the Pentax 18-250 and the screws are also quite small. Very real risk of stripping the screws on either lens. If the lens is working properly I would just leave it with a few dust particles.

I've shot a lot of horse shows and my 80-200 FA* 2.8 was the lens of choice unless you can get very close to the jumps. The 55-300 might be OK but you may be forced to be nearly wide open. You will want to keep shutter speeds in the 1/1000-1/2000 range to stop motion. If you can pre-focus on the jump itself, you may get a higher rate of keepers. Timing the shutter is one possibility. Others prefer to shoot multiple frames and high speed to capture that floating moment that the horse is in the air. Run and gun never worked for me. Riders are very aware of what the jump should look like so try to capture an angle the fully captures the athleticism of the horse and rider. Practice makes perfect. After a few jumps you will get the hang of when to trip the shutter. Head on shots are rarely flattering so consider 30 degrees or so from the side. Have fun! -
