Ricoh I think still has some mindshare with the editors at OP. I still have a print subscription to OP and was surprised to see that Ricoh took out a two page spread a few months ago on the K3 III, to coincide with OPs review of the K3 III.

Fantastic image. And even more so using Pixel Shift--I can't see any artifacts in the moving water. I'm assuming you're doing the initial processing in Raw Therapee? Thanks!

Will Pentax use the 43 MP Sony APC sensor for the next K-3?

Technology advances with time. We will know for certain at some point next year whether and how well Sony and Fuji have addressed the technical issues and tradeoffs of putting more MP in a small sensor. I do find a higher MP camera attractive for all the reasons higher MP cameras exist--ability to enlarge and crop. I like the idea of a higher MP small sensor because it reduces the size and weight of lenses. I don't expect Pentax to release another APC camera soon but the options and possibilities for the next generation certainly appear to be expanding.

Fuji is saying its XH-2 will use it, and it will be available next year. While I didn't reach for the K-3III myself, I would say that a K-3III with that sensor, and maybe the articulated screen from the current K-1, would be a KILLER landscape camera. I can't believe it would cost Pentax a whole lot more development $$ to drop that sensor into the new k-3 body and graft a K-1 style screen onto it... It actually makes sense to me given Pentax's recent investment in new APC lenses.

I just discovered Simon Booth's channel, which was mentioned here before, I think on the first page of posts. His channel is among the top landscape photography channels, irrespective of camera brand, that is out there. He just got a shout-out from Thomas Heaton. I'm going through his work now... very impressive, and worth another post to encourage viewers and subscriptions.

100 percent agree... about "f8 and be there". Unfortunately these days I have less opportunity to "be there" and more opportunity to sit at my desk and obsess about the equipment I'll take when I actually do get there. Another thing I hope to change in the not-to-distant future.

Edge and corner sharpness at 250mm fell off, noticeably. But that happens I think to nearly every zoom lens at its long end. I think up to 200mm, per the test results on this site, it performs admirably. That's primarily the reason I throw the KP in my bag: to get those long telephoto shots (out to 375mm equivalent!) with corner to corner sharpness, albeit with an APS sensor.

Stunning images, thank you for sharing! I agree that this is not the lightest kit... I wish there was an f4 version of the 15-30 also! I'm hoping the new 21mm can fulfill that role, even if I give up a little on the short end, and have to "zoom with my feet". ;-)

ah...yeah... really dopey of me not to know even the lenses I own! I meant the 15-30. I edited my original post to reflect the change. Thanks!

I do a lot of telephoto landscapes as a means of abstracting the image... turning it into more of a graphic image. But yes, agree with your other suggestions and observations!

---------- Post added 07-18-21 at 04:46 PM ----------

You've got the full arsenal there! Very envious.

---------- Post added 07-18-21 at 04:49 PM ----------

I haven't considered teleconverters... not sure they work well in sub-300mm zooms that I use. I haven't tried focus adjustment... do you think that would improve the IQ I am getting out of the 60-250 and K-1 combination?[COLOR="Silver"]

The 21 is definitely on my list the moment it becomes available!

---------- Post added 07-18-21 at 04:47 AM ----------

Yes, I would stop at the 70-210 but I want something at the longer end. The 300mm would do the trick in that case. I also have the 16-85 mm and will bring it along on long trips just to have a complete APC kit if needed.

---------- Post added 07-18-21 at 04:52 AM ----------

I never considered the 20mm Voigtlander as an UWA prime. That might be a great option until the new 21mm appears. Thank you!

---------- Post added 07-18-21 at 04:54 AM ----------

The 55-300mm PLM is on my list, for sure. Kicking myself for letting a few used ones go by on the Marketplace a few months back.

Best Pentax Outfit for Landscapes?

Hi all,

I’m primarily a landscape photographer, and my goal for putting together a Pentax outfit was to balance these priorities:

• Image quality (full frame vs APC-C, and lens quality)
• Weight
• Focal length coverage from ultra wide (less than 24mm) to super telephoto (longer than 300mm)

So here is what I came up with:

Bodies: K-1, and KP

Lenses: 15-30mm 2.8FA
28-105mm FA
60-250 F4*

My rationale is that that 16-35mm and the 28-105 give my solid coverage all the way to medium telephoto (105mm).

Beyond 105mm I have two options:

• The K-1 and the 60-250, which gets me to 250mm (although not thrilled with the image quality)

• OR the KP and the 60-250, which gives me superb quality and significantly longer reach, albeit with an APC sensor.

I also have the 24-70 2.8 FA, but I don’t think I lose too much IQ going with the 28-105, especially at medium apertures that I use for landscapes, and I really like the weight advantage of the 28-105.

Thoughts? Any other Pentax options that might better meet my objectives above?

Hopes For the next full frame camera

I'm hoping for a higher MP sensor. But not more than 45MP, I think, to keep the price reasonable.

I'm also hoping for advancements in Pixel Shift. That is still a big plus for me, and I hope they continue to build on it, make more useful for moving subjects, etc.

I would like to know if they have any updated schedule for the release of the new 21mm FA lens. Also, if they have any future plans to release an f4 version of the 15-30mm 2.8 zoom. That is s great lens but for landscapes it is very heavy and is an impediment to adopting Pentax FF for landscape photography. The new 21mm FA will help address that, but best solution, IMO, would be an f4 version of the WA zoom. Thanks!

I used the one above, purchased on Ebay. Very inexpensive, and fairly easy to remove to change batteries. The only modification I made was to sand down the corners on the lower left side. When using the camera hand-held those sharp corners really dig into my hand, given the weight of the K-1. A little grinding with a dremel and it is now very comfortable.
