Night A glimpse back in time.

Moon over the old town in Fredrikstad. The image was shot using a high ISO BW film with big grains in a Pentax Z-1p with a manual 50mm in 1998 if i recall correctly. I really do not remember the settings I used. I think the scene is mysterious and beautiful in it's own rough way, as if the viewer get a glimpse 400 years back in time.

I noticed the FA 50mm 1.4 lens is only $325.95 on the pentax web store which is lower than any online retail stores. Does this mean it will drop in the retail stores as well?

Idea: Mirrorless K-mount with telescoping mount

Hi forum members,

Probably the main reason why making a mirrorless version of an existing D-SLR mount is the flange distance required between the sensor and the lens. The lens has to be so far away from the sensor, that the body can't be be much tinned than existing SLR bodies, negating the size advantage offered by getting rid of the mirror.

So, how about this idea: Pentax should make a thin mirrorless camera, that uses the standard k-mount and keeps the existing flange distance. It can do this by using a telescoping mechanism on the mount. The mount could retract when the camera is off, creating a really slim body for carrying the camera. Then, when you turn on the camera, the mount and attached lens could extend out the the proper distance, ready for taking the picture.

It would certainly take some clever engineering to get this kind of mechanism working nicely, but Pentax has some great engineers. I'm sure they could pull it off.

What do you think?

is it possible to remove rep? if so, i'd like to remove yours. ;)
imagine yourself in Yvon's shoes and imagine how Yvon will feel when he reads this thread to see people criticizing him when his mother has just passed away.

Yvon: you have my sympathies. Take care of the things that truly matter in life (family) and eventually maybe you can come back here and resume this work, here.

K5 Buffer

I was using a SanDisk Extreme III., so I don't think speed was the issue.

I also agree with the other posters that suggested this is not really a card speed issue but more of a processing bottle neck. I notice it just shooting single high-iso shots when it takes 1-2 seconds for the preview on the rear LCD to show up.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the size of the RAW files, for the same shot content, varies quite a bit. For the test image I shot (the one with the toy dragon, car and medicine bottle), the RAW file size was as follows:

K5__0991_iso100.DNG 18.41 MB
K5__0992_iso200.DNG 19.68 MB
K5__0993_iso400.DNG 21.44 MB
K5__0994_iso800.DNG 23.14 MB
K5__0995_iso1600.DNG 25.40 MB
K5__0996_iso3200.DNG 26.44 MB
K5__0997_iso6400.DNG 28.96 MB
K5__0998_iso12800.DNG 31.63 MB
K5__0999_iso25600.DNG 32.70 MB
K5__1000_iso51200.DNG 32.71 MB

So I'm sure this is also a large factor in how many shots can be taken before the buffer fills.

Sorry about the mistake. Didn't notice the copy/paste error :(

Updated w/ the correct links, hope DA35/2.4 would look slightly better at F4 now ;)

Thanks for pointing this out.

Guys, I think all of you reading this lens shootout should give Frank his due credit by clicking on the Reputation icon on the bottom left of his avatar. I know Frank personally for a number of years now and he is definitely highly respected for the depth of his knowledge on things relating to Pentax.

Very personable and objective, you'll get no mumbo-jumbo, airy fairy theoretical bullshit from him, and having owned just about every recent Pentax lens I can think off, whatever he says is backed by plenty of experience. It is largely through his efforts that he has steadily grown the Singapore Pentax community through his tireless Pentax monthly outings and his personal interaction to help newbies and experienced shooters alike to discover what makes Pentax unique. I can personally attest to so many who have opted to make Pentax their choice due to him personally.

A BIG kudos to you, Frank for your tireless efforts.
