Item for Sale
35mm f2.0 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar w/original hood + case

Asking Price
$210 including shipping within Canada

Item Location
Ontario (Canada)

Item Description
Amazing copy of the 35mm f2.0 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar with rare, original square lens hood, lens-hood-case, case, and front cap. Although I bought it "2nd hand" it was in its original cellophane packaging, so I am virtually the first owner of this lens which I have had for a few years and used on and off. I left the QA sticker on...doesn't look very nice now, but you could remove it.

Check the pics. There's a little dust on the exterior, but glass internally and externally is extremely clean.

Message with any questions...worth the extra few bucks over a regular copy without the hood, and looks gangbusters with the K-5 while shooting video!!

DA21mm F3.2 AL Limited

I bought this DA 21mm in mint shape from a local (Toronto) seller who had purchased new from Prodigital2000 on ebay and used it for a few weeks. I immediately purchased a lens protector filter and shot with it for about a month, but the focal length just isn't for me. Long story short, it's only a few months old, in amazing shape and comes with all paperwork and boxes (including silica gel and bags), and Optex clear protective filter ($25 value). Message with any questions.

I purchased the DA 40mm at the same time. It was used for a longer period of time and does not come with a box or paperwork, but is in the same amazing condition. Also includes a $25 Optex clear protective filter and original lens cap and hood.

Adventure Sports / travel 2-lens kit suggestions?

Funny, my three areas of pursuit in building my kit are 1) size, 2) coverage and 3) quality. My reasoning is that the best equipment for the job if the stuff that gets used the most...I'd rather take 500 photos with a lens or setup with more limitations than take 20 photos with a big, heavy high quality lens. I'd get a lot more keepers and tell a better story with the 500 shots, even if they're not perfect.
I'm not out in the world with the goal of taking photographs...but I do want to document some of my experiences.

I picked up 2nd hand copies of DA21 and DA40 locally, and am testing them out before my trip so see what will work, in the end picking between the 17/4 fisheye, 18-55WR, DA21 and DA40. I think a setup like the K5 with the pancake is pretty amazing...the quality and photographic control of a DSLR that can fit in a tiny travel pack with my passport and wallet. Quiet shutter, high ISO quality and DR, compact body and lens...fast, unobtrusive, perfect! I don't think you can get much smaller without losing the mirror, and I'm not willing to move to a "Q" or a point and shoot just yet.

I'm trying to figure out the wide end now! So I'm good with the 18-55 WR and the DA 40/2.8...but do I stick with the 18-55 only for wide stuff, my 17/4 Fisheye Takumar, the DA 21mm, or the DA 15mm?

The fisheye will have an even wider perspective than the 15mm and won't cost me anything...and while there may be a weight penalty (100g?) but I would wager it isn't much larger than the 21...maybe smaller than the15. It does have an exposed front element and cap that tends to fall off which worry me.

The 21mm sounds great...moderate wide for landscapes (maybe a little long), small size. The 15mm is more expensive, bigger, but has the optics and the FOV I'd probably prefer.

The kit is what it is, but for size reasons I don't want it on the front of my camera unless it's specifically called for...weather or flexibility required.

Takumar 85mm 1.8 vs. Samyang 85mm 1.4

I'd suggest that the 85/1.8 and 85/1.9 are two very different lenses in their own right...the former being sharper with more PF, and the latter being a little softer wide open with no PF issues.

I think so. I don't see doing any birding or wildlife while traveling, mostly landscapes, architecture, portraits, interiors, closeups (detail stuff)...documentary kind of images. I've longer stuff I'll have access to at home (85/1.8 takumar, 120/2.8 takumar, 300/4 takumar and the DA-L 55-300) for more longer perspectives.

A little lightbulb went on this morning...a combination of #1 and #3, as my priorities are Size/Weight, WR, IQ in that order.

My solution will be as follows: Carry the WR kit lens off camera, used for times when the weather is nasty or I'm putting the camera in precarious situations. But have either a DA40 and/or DA21 for quick and compact "off the hip" shooting. The idea is that the kit lens will stay off the camera in my backpack...accessible but not mounted. A pancake stays on the camera as the "go-to" lens while hiking in fair conditions.

Small/lightweight, prime-image-quality shooting when possible, and WR versatile zoom when required...all with a total kit weight that is very reasonable. With weights of

21mm - 140g
40mm - 90g
18-55 WR - 230g

Even all three total just 470g, over 100g less than the DA* alone, and takes up a lot less space.

The question then becomes 21mm, 40mm or both.

So I've been thinking it through some more and come up with a few more concrete scenarios for lenses for camping, adventuring, travel and filmmaking:

1. Do nothing. 18-55WR, 55-300, 17mm fisheye and my other takumars selected as needed.
The kit lens is light, but the takumars are heavy if relatively compact. The WR, if broken or dropped, I frankly don't mind. And takumars could probably withstand some light rain...

2. Carry only an upgraded standard zoom: 16-45, 18-135 or 16-50.
The 16-50 is big, and less weight while camping is a great thing...but this lens would do everything I need...sealed, versatile range, bright. It's just...so big and expensive! The 16-45 would be cheap, light and flexible, while the 18-135 would be ok too, with lots of room on the long end.

3. Go pancake...carry a DA21, DA40 or both.
These little lenses wouldn't extend out past the body of the k5 much...light weight and small size make them easy to carry, and less likely to break, but they are not weather sealed...something that worries me. Also, small focus barrel would make video focus pulling a challenge I'm sure.

Any more thoughts?

FFF question - fisheye, focal length and FOV

Oh and don't you hate it when people say that rectilinear wide angles don't "distort" images? It kills me! As per mapping projections, rectilinear lenses distort the representation of area instead of lines...it's just "different" distortion. :)

FFF question - fisheye, focal length and FOV

Interesting, I'm a GIS / mapping professional and never really thought about optics like this it in terms of mapping projections. I guess one could have a different degree of distortion between the centre and edges, or basically "map" the image in dozens of different ways.

Thanks for the insight. I guess photographing a grid with the various lenses, comparing FOV and distortion could be a really interesting exercise!

FFF question - fisheye, focal length and FOV
Posted By d.bradley
Replies: 10

I've posed this question before but never had a straight answer...so I'll try again!

The scenario is as follows: there are 4 fisheye lenses with 4 different focal lengths, but a common FOV. What's going on here?

Examples:
Peleng 8mm Fisheye - 180 degree field of view (circular)
Sigma 15mm fisheye - 180 degree field of view
Zenitar 16mm fisheye - 180 degree field of view
Pentax 17mm Fisheye Takumar - 180 degree field of view

What's the deal? Is distortion the deciding factor here, with shorter focal length giving more barrel distortion?

Hmmm...an often asked question, but perhaps different within the context of sports/travel. How about the 16-45 f4, should this even be on my list? I'm struggling with budget and trying to figure out how wide I need to go.

I wonder what the FOV is of my 17mm f4 fisheye, given it is a full 180 degrees on film?

So I have a few fun things on the go: a trip to Ireland, some trail running and mountain biking video projects and a general love of outdoor photography and video work.

I'm picking up one or both of the LowePro Sport packs, showcased here: Lowepro | Photo Sport Series

The real question is what to do about lenses for my K5.

I have bee relying on my collection of old SMC Takumars: 17 fisheye, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 120/2.8 and 300/4. For a work project (not aesthetically driven) I added a 18-55 WR kit lens and the DA-L 55-300. Those sport packs can only really hold two lenses and the body...and that's all I would want to carry with me. So for travel, mountain biking, hiking, climbing and all those other wicked outdoor sports, what would you take? Keep in mind weight, lens quality, versatility and the subject matter: landscapes and adventure sports

A few ideas:
1. Buy a DA*16-50 and pair it with the 55-300.
2. Stick with the 17/4 Fisheye and pair it with the 18-55
3. Buy an 18-135 and call it a day
4. Buy a UWA, maybe a 12-24 paired with 55-300?

Other random thoughts:
- I LOVE my SMC takumars, but i'm starting to think that the demands of my photography, moving from static subjects to "on the run" photos, makes AF lenses more appropriate
- I've relished the idea of shooting video and stills on the DA35mm Macro...keeping it as a walkabout.
- 15mm f4 would be a great walk about lens as well.
- Aren't the old takumars better for video?

What would you do?

Sent my K5 to Pentax here is how it is going.

I just got back my K5 from Pentax Canada. Packing slip says it had the sensor replaced, and the serial no. is the same, so it's clearly not a replacement body.

It did take some time, and they're a little disorganized, but they did the work and were at least pleasant to deal with. I'm not too thrilled that I had to send it in in the first place, but I will neither criticize or sing praise about pentax and their warranty/customer support.

The camera, is however, well worth the troubles.
