I did it on CS3 so it should be easy, unless I talk over your head.

I started with the base color jpeg, duplicated it and add a layer mask to the top layer(allows me to erase parts of the photo without damaging the original photo). Now you can either lasso or erase everything out besides the tennis player. Once the background is deleted from the top layer, go to the bottom layer and desaturate(do not turn mode to grayscale because it will convert the top photo to grayscale as well). next I selected the recangular marquee tool and set the feather to 25 pixels. On the B+W copy make feathered selections by marqueeing most of the photo and duplicating it. Then merge them and go over with a quick blend from the blur tool.

if you need anything explained further, or simplified just tell me and I will try

I know a lot of my editing is changing the picture rather than enhance what is already there. I just wanted to post and show you what I do with my spare time. I am always open to comments and critiques. The last photo is more of the editing I want to get into.

All photos(except the last one) are taken with a cannon powershot S-something. It had around 3.7 megapixels. The last one is taken with a Cannon rebel XT.
